Owner description: DiveMex is a small dive center in downtown Playa del Carmen close to the public bus station, the ferry and the public transport station for tulum and cancun. Diving with us is so much more than just get dressed, jump into the water and dive. The personal experience of every diver is very important to us and that's why we only dive in small groups up to 4 divers. Safe diving, no rushing and personal service guaranteed. You will get the best diving experience possible, regardless if you are at the beggining of your diving career or already an advanced diver

“Shark Diving Extravaganza”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 February 2014

On the spur of the moment my mother and I decided to leave Cozumel and take a day trip to Playa del Carmen. Marcel Taubert, the dive master, met us at the ferry and we did 2 dives together. They were dive number 114 and 115 for me. Marcel briefed us to stay in a group, get on our knees and be still. 5 bull sharks came by to look at us. They were very close and it was the thrill of a lifetime! I show people the photos every day. In addition to the sharks and stingrays at Shark Point, we saw moray eels, lobsters, lots of small colorful fish and beautiful coral at Chunzobol. The total cost for four dives was 168 dollars. The day was the highlight of our trip and I highly recommend diving with Marcel. He was very safe and dependable. And he played some great CDs in the truck on the way to and from the dive entrance point!

“Referral course plus much more”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 18 January 2014

My husband and I recently took a trip to Playa del Carmen to finish our scuba certification and enjoy the sun and sand. We booked our referral course to do our open water dives with DiveMex in Playa del Carmen and were not disappointed. It was a great experience. We had done our pool and theory in Colorado and after much research on-line we chose DiveMex to complete the open water.

When we arrived the first day the harbor was closed due to the weather and we were informed we would go to a Cenote to do the first 2 dives. What a treat. The water was crystal clear and calm. Emilio was our instructor and he was awesome. I was very nervous and he calmed me down easily. The next set of dives was to be in the ocean and it was a pleasant experience. We were then certified open water scuba. Since we had a good experience so far we decided to book some more dives with DiveMex. We were not disappointed.

The next day we dove with the sharks and it was awesome. We saw probably 20 sharks. We went with Anna and she took over 100 photos of all of us. It was an amazing experience.

The next day we went to the cenote Choc Mool with Dirk. I was very nervous as I am a bit claustrophobic and Dirk easily put me at ease. Being newly certified Dirk was very helpful in explaining what we were doing wrong and how to fix it. He is a great instructor and guide and we both felt very safe with him. We did 2 long dives with him and two other divers.

We did a night dive, the shark dive again, and the turtle dive with Marcel for our last 3 dives. Again, a good guide. We saw 6 sharks and 4 sea turtles.

In all, we had 4 different people take us out on dives and all 4 were excellent. Each dive we were adequately briefed on what we would experience, what the signals were, how to communicate with each one, who your buddy would be, etc. I felt safe and relaxed each time I went into the water with these guys. They take great care of their equipment. They listened to each person's concerns if there were any and didn't belittle them or make them feel stupid. At the same time, they pushed you to realize your potential. We had an awesome experience with them!

Don't let the low prices fool you. They are a professional shop and the equipment is in good shape. Friendly atmosphere and helpful.

I would highly recommend DiveMex to anyone whether getting certified, you have hundreds of dives under your belt or anywhere in between. They are very knowledgeable and will give you the guidance you need or want.

“AOWD in beautiful location, interesting price”

We did wonderful dives with sharks in Playa, along the coral reef in Playa and in Cozumel, getting our AOWD for an unbeatable price, with friendly staff.

“Tranquilo”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 January 2014

Went out with DiveMex for four dives on two days in the ocean basically just off the shore of Playa del Carmen. Saw my first ever stingrays, saw plenty of lion fish, some puffer fish, the omnipresent turtles of course and had an over all really nice set of dives, first with Marcel and then with Dirk the next day. Pricing is more than fair and the equipment I rented was all in very good shape. The dive groups are reasonably sized to just plain small and I never felt like the guide was not on top of things at any point during the dives. There's definitely a "do not rush" policy in effect at Dive Mex, which means that when you meet at the shop at 12:00 pm for the afternoon dives you probably won't be in the water until after 2:00 pm and you'll get back to shore just as the sun sets. If you want to do something else with your afternoon, plan for the morning dive trips at 08:00 am.

“Be very careful with this diving place!”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 January 2014

We were very disappointed with our diving experience for multiple reasons: #1- equipment is poorly maintained; there were 5 of us diving, one of my tanks was empty, my buddies regulator did not work, we were given a replacement which did not work either. Finally, we had to ask another diving boat for another regulator- this one worked. I am surprised and alarmed that they did not check their equipment. On our first day of diving the guides Emilio and Luis were excellent, once we sorted out faulty regulators, very calm, knowledgeable, helpful and reassuring. But the planning of the trip was terrible! We asked Derk months in advance for a trip for both snorkelers and divers; we were assured that this dive would be fine. We had one snorkeler with us, she was not allowed to leave the boat because the water was too deep for snorkeling and the currents too strong – but we were only told this while already on the boat! So the poor girl spent many dreadful hours on a very stinky slow boat for now reason! On our second dive the regulator stopped working for another member of our group and she lost air pressure and had to share her buddy’s air and they had to surface. What’s more- the guide was not helpful at all and very unprofessional. #2- the company does not have a boat and the ones they rent are the slowest around; the dive in Cozumel took 11 hours, of which 1 and a half was actual diving and the rest getting to and from the place! Were we told that beforehand. would have never taken this dive.
If you decide to go with this company, make sure that you ask about every possible little detail of the trip! The sites were good but not worth 9.5 hours of very unpleasant boat ride. The company is after maximizing their profit, not the pleasure of your diving experience

Thank you for taking the time to share your opinion. We are sorry to read that your trip has not been as enjoyable as it should have.

Our boats are not as large and fast as the ones from the big companies, where you can dive with other 30 divers on the same dive site. In return, we keep our groups small to offer a more personal experience.

Regarding the snorkeler, it was due to safety reasons that she was not allowed in the water, being the sea conditions not ideal.
About equipments, our standard procedure is to check all gears before departure, to make sure everything works properly. We would like to apologise for the inconveniences that you had on this day.

Your opinion is very valuable and offered us an opportunity to improve.
In fact, since your visit, we have purchased many new gear, regulators included!

Special thanks for your comments about our excellent, knowledgeable and helpful staff.

Regards
