“Perfect location, perfect all-inclusive”
Reviewed 13 May 2013

Had an absolutely fantastic time in Playa del Carmen, and I definitely recommend the Iberostar Tucan. I traveled with my 22 year old daughter, and we had a perfect week. We loved the very natural feel of the Tucan – it is not a big high rise plopped on the beach but rather separate buildings, each housing about 40-some rooms. Its sister property is Iberostar Quetzal, and they share the dining facilities, pool and beach areas. They integrate beautifully with the jungle-like setting.

Kudos go to the amazing, friendly staff. The wait staff, housekeeping, grounds keepers and entertainers are incredibly hardworking and personable. Animacion Excelente! (You’ll know what that means when you get there!) The staff is committed to helping you have a wonderful vacation experience. They truly seem to enjoy what they are doing.

The rooms are pleasant and kept extremely clean, as are the grounds. The pool area is beautiful. There is a very large main pool, a kiddie area, a separate swim-up pool/bar, and a water sports pool. We did have some silly hiccups with our room – the hair dryer and phone needed replacing, the safe needed WD40 in order to open, and the TV reception could be fuzzy. All of these issues were taken care of within minutes of our letting them know, and the staff was very pleasant about it.

The beach is gorgeous and cleaned every morning. There are plenty of lounge chairs and palapas for shade. Fresh beach towels are available all day with the exchange of your towel key. Wait staff circulate through the beach taking drink orders, or you can walk up to the bar on the beach. They are not the strongest drinks, but we aren’t big alcohol consumers and weren’t interested in getting toasted by alcohol plus the sun. Non-motorized water sports are available for free, and you can rent jet skis and pay for dive trips. We paid for catamaran lessons and it was such a blast. Thank you Oliver!

The buffets offered plenty of variety, and plenty of food. This is not the Four Seasons, folks, this is BUFFET! There was so much to choose from, lots of main courses, side dishes, fresh fruit and deserts. We made evening reservations for al a carte dining at the Marimba steak house, the Japanese restaurant, and the Tropical restaurant, which are all known by different names during the day. I had a chicken medallion dish at the Tropical which was especially delicious.

There are tons of activities every day, from water aerobics, beach volleyball, Zumba, to salsa lessons (25 different activities), that you are never left wondering what to do. Go ahead and do the beach Olympics – your embarrassment will pass because hey, you’ll never see these people again, right?!

Our favorite thing about our stay was the entertainment troupe. Mauricio, mi amor, we miss you and Eduardo, the “Mexican Justin Beiber!” Diego is a salsa machine! Each night they perform a different live show, then afterwards a live band performs for about an hour for dancing. The entertainers will politely invite any unaccompanied ladies out to dance. Do it! For the really late nighters there is also a disco on the property.

Must-dos in the area include Tulum, Xel-Ha, Xcaret and La Quinta Avenida. There are Apple Vacation reps on site to book the first three, and La Quita Avenida is a $7 cab ride.

We just got back on Thursday from a week at Iberostar Tucan. It was a great vacation and I am now trying to find friends to go back next year. From what we understand, this resort is much smaller then some North of Playa which have to use golf carts just to get around. The resort, though, has everything we needed, including restaurants, lots of beach chairs, and loads of entertainment (if you want to participate that day). We stayed in the 1300 block, which was close to the pool and not too far from the restaurants. I highly recommend 1300 or 1200 block since these have paths right down to the pool by the towels, which you get fresh everyday. We made reservations for dinner as soon as we got there for the next 3 days and truly enjoyed the Japanese restaurant but did not like the steak at the steakhouse. The beach was great too. This was the only resort we noticed that gave out extra umbrellas if all the huts were filled. Big bonus, as it was hot and sunny and I needed shade! Since we are one of the last resorts on the beach, we were able to quickly walk beyond the hotels and snorkel at a man made reef just south of the hotels. And the walk takes you to beautiful little rock formations and there are lots of shells and crabs to see. And talking about animals, they were such a fun part of the resort. There is a troop of around 22 howler monkey's including 4 new babies, there are lots of agoutis and peacocks, flamingos and iguanas. The grounds are beautiful too. There are waterfalls on the Quetzal side and fountains on the Tucan side.
What to bring: Sound machine for sleeping, conditioner because they don't supply it, sunscreen which is very expensive down there, some $1s for tipping those that you want to tip (not mandatory or anything).
More tips: if you plan on snorkeling or diving, book this before you go since there is a 20% discount which can add up quickly if you are diving. Also, paint some pottery. It is more expensive then buying some in the gift shop, but its yours. William will make your pottery even better with his added artistic abilities!
Want to thank: Ivan at the swim up bar, William at the paint your own pottery, and all the staff of the Dressel Dive Shop (at the Tucan and Cozumel) which was fantastic!
Hope this helps, we had a great time!

Have just returned from this hotel,we were there from the 17th of April to 1st of May and are counting down the days to our next visit. This hotel is just what the doctor ordered and I am most definately going to get it on repeat prescription.. LOL....On our arrival we were greeted by friendly staff and were quickly given a cold drink and then checked in with ease. The bell boys took our luggage to our rooms with no fuss or hassle to ourselves,it was waiting in the room for us when we got there., they did not expect a tip but we gave them one 20 to 40 pesos which is very much appreciated by them. The lobby itself is very impressive with a gift shop a jewellery shop and a photo shop where you can buy your holiday photos from, a team of proffesional photogrophers go round the pool or beach with parrots tucans and other animals but they will only approach you if let them know you are interested. The beach is awesome with many sunbeds but you do need to get up early before 8am to get a bed with shade but if not you can get an umbralla from the towel stall situated at the poolside if your towel becomes to wet during your day you can change it to a dry one as many times as you like which is a bonus. The pool is like a big lagoon and is just as awesome as the sea both are like walking into a warm bath. The rooms are ample and very comfortable air conditioning and ceiling fan was a god send as the weather while we were there was hot hot hot, the beds were very comfortable we stayed in block 12 and had the new mattresses that are replacing the old firm ones. The staff from reception to the house maids and the gardeners who kept the gronds immaculate were friendly and always helpful and greeted you with a friedly Hola. The buffet was excellent and had something for everybody and was always hot, breakfast was a favourite of ours sausage crispy bacon and fresh eggs made for you if wanted and freshly made omlettes or scrambled egg.We stayed round the pool so used the pool side restuarant at dinner time hot dogs pizza sandwiches etc.Evening buffet was brilliant with varius hot dishes and plenty of salads to chose from and there was always a roast joint at the carvery every night, pork was my favourite so tender it melts in your mouth and the best crackling ever. We would like to thank Rubisel our morning waiter for keeping us supplied with orange and coffee, also Gilberto and Wiiliam our evening waiters they were terrific who kept us supplied with water and soft drinks, Iberostar should be proud of them.We tipped them most everyday 20 to 40 pesos as they work so very hard to please you We would also like to say a big thankyou to Carmello our housemaid who made our day with her towel art and the girls round the pool who bought your drinks to you, another big thankyou goes to Lindsey our First Choice rep who could not do enough for you she is a very kind and caring person and will treat you like a friend, she will not push the trips onto you or pressure you like some holiday reps do but will help you decide what suits your needs best and last but not last thank you Iberostar for making this holiday a truly memorable one that will not be forgotten in a hurry,We made many friends at this hotel, Larry Linda Angie Jim Shay Jim Avery and Logan Jenny Jim and Linda, Michelle and husband and Cameron and Drew and just to let you know folks you all made our holiday just that little bit more special. Thanks Iberostar Tucan for a fantastic holiday. WE WILL BE BACK.....................Chris and Alan Daley

I have been to many resorts in the Caribbean over the past 10 years and this place was HANDS DOWN one of my favorite. From the food, drinks, room, shows, staff, etc. everything was awesome !

If you love wild life this is the place to be. I had monkeys on my balcony daily. Could be annoying when they start howling but a small price to pay being this close.

I guarantee you wont be disappointed. Final tip, make sure you make reservations at all their restaurants. One was better than the next. Happy travels!

Room Tip: Stay in a room within the 1300s or 1400s. Close to wild life but also convenient to pool and beach.

My husband and I just returned (to a snowstorm!) from an 11-day trip, where we stayed at the Iberostar Tucan. This hotel is amazing, the grounds are beautiful and well-maintained and spotless. The service is wonderful, and the staff are all friendly and helpful. We previously stayed at the Iberostar Paraiso Del Mar three times, and wanted to try the Tucan, since it was closer to Playa. It was great to be able to walk up the beach to Playa! And what a beach!! In my opinion, the Tucan has the BEST beach in the area. Loved it! We tried all of the specialty restaurants, loved the Japanese, the tropical and the Steakhouse the most! The buffet was good, and there was always a good variety of foods to choose from, including a lot of different dishes from other countries to try. The bed was firm, but I slept like a baby every night, until the howler monkies woke me up early the next day, which I absolutely loved! (We requested a room by the jungle so that we could see the monkies a lot!) We will be returning next year, and will book the Tucan for sure!

Room Tip: We stayed in building 14, facing the jungle.

My husband and I stayed at the Iberostar Tucan (350 rooms on Tucan side, 350 rooms on Quetzal side; built in 1998) for 6 days/5 nights. We had stayed at this resort in 1999 for our first trip to an all-inclusive in Mexico and we were awed by everything about the experience. We have since stayed at 30+ all-inclusives in Mexico so we thought we'd return to the Tucan to see if our initial memories of the resort would hold up. We were not disappointed.

Transfer: We used Lomas Travel for our shared airport transfer because it was slightly cheaper than a private transfer with USA Transfers (usa-transfers.com) which we normally use. Mistake! Finalizing the return transfer required three trips to the lobby to turn in our voucher and be told our pickup time – time we could have spent on the beach. They even tried to get us to pay again for the return portion of our transfer (when we had already paid for round-trip service). Lesson learned!

Check-in: Check-in was quick and painless. Alberto worked hard to get us a room comparable to the one we had requested by email prior to our arrival (building 11, 12 or 13; 2nd or 3rd floor; facing the jungle). We ended up in building 14, 2nd floor, facing the jungle, and it was perfect! We saw monkeys off our balcony and from the front of our building. It was well-situated, about halfway between the lobby/buffet and the pool/beach.

Room: Our room was spacious and clean (and was kept very clean by housekeeping throughout our stay). There was a new towel animal on our bed every day. Cute! The beds seemed to be about medium firmness (much softer than at many all-inclusives) and the pillows were plump and firm. The air conditioner worked well as long as you were in the room (rooms have motion sensors) and the patio door was firmly closed (the maid left ours slightly open a couple of times). There was a ceiling fan which was set on a relatively fast speed that could not be changed without a ladder (it could be turned on and off with a wall switch). One other related issue: electronics would not charge when you were out of the room. There is a free safe in the room large enough for an ipad and more. The shower was large but had low, albeit adequate, pressure through the main shower head. You could get more pressure by using the hand-held spray. The water temperature in the shower tended to fluctuate. Body wash, shampoo and soap are provided. There is no hair conditioner but there was a hair dryer. This resort prides itself on being eco-friendly so the no A/C when out of the room and low pressure shower are part of that I'm sure.

Grounds: This resort is a little different from most in that they have left much of the property in its natural jungle state. This is great for giving guests a feeling of privacy and for being able to see and hear a wide variety of wildlife (monkeys, peacocks, coatis, iguanas, etc.). It is fun to walk on the paths through the middle of the resort to enjoy the jungle setting while trying to spot animals. Watch your step because these paths are a little uneven. There are some manicured areas around the perimeter of the resort and near the pool and lobby. There is a male peacock who has claimed the area by building 15 near the Tulum buffet as his own. He is often there, with his tail fully displayed, gyrating and shaking to woo the female peacocks who are nearby. Great photo-op!

Beach/Pool: The beach was beautiful and very deep (long distance from “back” of beach to water's edge). Palapas near the back of the beach have some cement/rocks under them so the footing is less comfortable there. The water entry is all soft sand (no rocks or coral); we didn't see any seaweed. The water is very clear and the soft sand bottom extends throughout all of the roped-off swimming area. There is no true snorkeling from the beach but you can see angel fish (we even saw a small barracuda) in the swimming area. There are lots of palapas on the beach but, unfortunately, you do have to reserve one early (by 8:00 AM or so) because everyone else does. You can also borrow large cloth beach umbrellas from the window where you get beach towels. We didn't use the pool, but it looked clean and it was warm (toe test). Families with kids seemed to station themselves by the pool while the beach was primarily used by adults – a nice separation.

Restaurants: The breakfast and dinner buffets have lots of choices including many Mexican items. We were always able to find different food that we liked. Breakfast is also available at the Uxmal beach restaurant. There were not as many choices as at the main buffet but there were plenty: omelets, bacon, sausage, potatoes, refried beans, cereal, yogurt, cold cuts, fruit, pastries, etc. There are three places to have a buffet lunch by the beach: Uxmal, La Marimba, and a grill by the Uxmal. There are also three places to get ice cream during the afternoon: soft serve at the grill by the Uxmal and in the La Marimba poolside restaurant, and scooped ice cream at a cart on the beach near the Uxmal. For dinner, we also made reservations for the Mexican restaurant and the steakhouse. We liked the steakhouse better than the Mexican. We did find service at both restaurants to be quick, which we appreciated. We're not fans of two-hour dinners. We made our restaurant reservations right after we checked in (before we even went to our room). The concierge/reservation booth in the lobby is open from 9:00 AM-noon and 4:00-8:00 pm. Reservations can be made for 6:30, 7:00, 8:30 or 9:00 PM. We used room service (11:00 AM-11:00 PM) once – to get sandwiches to pack in Ziploc bags (brought from home) to store in the minibar and then take with us for our flight home. Our food arrived within 30 minutes and was very good – much better than paying the exorbitant prices at the airport restaurants!

Bars: Top shelf brands of liquor are available at the lobby bar (ask!). Service was always prompt in the lobby bar. The choices of liquor and beer are more limited at the beach bar. Drink service on the beach varied but it was usually available and relatively prompt. We usually sat on the beach near the Uxmal restaurant and found that the line at the bar in the Uxmal was shorter than that at the beach bar. Both the Uxmal and the beach bar had self-service ice, soft drinks and juices throughout the day (bring your large insulated mug!).

Entertainment: The members of the Star Friends entertainment crew with whom we interacted were friendly but not pushy. They invited guests to participate but respected a “no thanks”. There were varied activities by the pool and on the beach throughout the day but, thankfully, there was no throbbing resort music by the pool. We did not go to any of the nightly shows at the theater but did enjoy the guitarist or keyboardist who performed almost nightly (approx. 7:15-8:30 and 9:00-9:40) in one of the two lobby bars (guests can use both the Tucan and the Quetzal sides). There was a Mexican market with local vendors set up near the theater one night. The resort definitely caters to families (a clown made balloon animals at the buffet restaurant during dinner; there was a magic show for kids on the beach).

Miscellaneous: Wifi cost ranged from $8/hour to $13/day; using the computers in the lobby cost $6.50/hour. Starbucks, a 5-7 minute walk north, has free wifi with purchase and the code doesn't change from day to day.

As I said before, we enjoyed our return trip to the Iberostar Tucan and would be happy to return again.

Room Tip: Rooms on the second or third floor facing the jungle are best for seeing the monkeys.

My husband and I stayed at the Iberostar Tucan for 1 week, April 9-16th, and loved it all!
We especially want to mention Luz Hernandez for her hospitality towards us, and another
girl who works for Olympus Tours, she is stationed in the lobby, her name is Kate, she is
very helpful, and very kind. We had to cancel a tour and she was wonderful about us getting
our money back. The resort is very pretty. We had a Jr. Suite overlooking the beach and
ocean. Our room was spacious, and they keep everything very clean throughout the resort.
Food was very good, especially at the steak house and Italian restaurants. We enjoyed
going to 5th Avenue, just a $7.00 taxi ride, about 10 minutes from the resort. Nice shops and
restaurants there. The beach was just steps from my door, loved it! Lots of little critters walking
around. Sae a family of monkeys in a tree as we were walking by! Highly recommend this
resort.
