Our stay was from Nov. 9th – 16th. This our second time at Sandos Caracol and I must say our return trip was even better than our first. We were treated like visiting family and they thanked us for being returning guests. It is very apparent that the hotel is under new management ( positive change!) since our first stay in 2009. This is reflected in the care and concern by staff and the improvements to the resort. My compliments to Sandos Resorts for investing to upgrade and update their hotels. We had emailed our ala carte restaurant reservations (a tip from Sandos Caracol on Facebook) so those were presented to us at check-in. Marianna Urtaza of Guest Services is so very nice and a huge asset to Sandos Caracol, she goes above and beyond to be sure you have an enjoyable vacation. We had an excellent experience at check-in by Fabiola. She speaks great English, was very polite and went out of her way to be sure we were satisfied and taken care of. We were very impressed by her.
We really enjoyed the Friday night Mexican theme buffet, the Mariachi Band was a nice touch and they were fun and engaging guys. We tended to sit at the same table in the LaLaguna buffet and received great service and friendliness from Jeni and George. George can be quite the jokester! Vicky @ LaLaguna assisted us our first day and treated us like old friends the rest of the week. She’s got a sweet and bubbly personality, you can tell she genuinely loves her job and people! We loved the new Los Lirios restaurant (the whole new section is beautiful), our meal was fantastic and we received great service from Jose who was so incredibly polite and nice, we really appreciated him, he’s an impressive young man. This trip we enjoyed the privileges of the Select Club and I believe it was Alejandro (I hope I got his name right) who bartended. What a great guy, he’s always fun and smiling and made sure you were taken care of when it was your turn courteously and tactfully. Our waitress on the Select Club beach during the day was outstanding as well; however, I neglected to get her name. Our other favorite restaurant was LaRiviera; we sat by the falling water which was nice. We received great service and a delicious meal from our friendly waiter Lorenzo and both Alberto’s who were fun and made sure we had everything we needed. I don’t want to forget to mention our hotel room attendant. We never did meet him/her but they did a great job. Our room was always spotless, well stocked (w/ face cloths--it’s an American thing), perfectly made beds and cute towel animals made for us daily. We were in room 1203 (building 12) which is close to the beach.
The racoons and coatis were much more aggressive for food this trip, but this is because guests continue to feed them! There is a recording asking you to please not feed them, so don’t! They are cute and they’ve become excellent beggars but feeding them only encourages bad behavior and someone could get hurt. Their bad behavior annoys guests and the employees having to constantly chase them away.
In 2009 we chose Sandos Caracol because it fit our price point in all-inclusive resorts. It still fits our price point but we genuinely enjoy the hospitality, food, and amenities of this resort. As long as it remains within our budget, we’ll continue to be loyal customers. We find it to be a great value!
I have three suggestions and that would be to bring back the free shuttle to Playa del Carmen; even if only once or twice a week and just one way going there would be nice. Another is to have that fantastic guacamole available at all times at the buffets and snack bar!
And lastly to lower your prices at the spa, we would love to use them much more but the prices are way out of our budget. I think if you lowered them you would get many more customers.

Room Tip: Building 1-11 are for Royal Elite only then the lower the number of the building the closer to the b...

Just got back on Monday 11/26/12, I will defiantly not be booking there again. I have been to Mexico twice in the past at other all inclusive resorts. Sandos Caracol is definitely ranked #3 of the 3 I have been too.

BEWARE OF THE BEST DAY TRAVEL DESK FOR EXCURSIONS!!!! I WAS THE VICTIM OF CREDIT CARD FRAUD! Arrived home and found fraudulent charges (charges to an internet porn site) to my Mastercard account. I ONLY used the card at the Best Day Travel desk to book 2 excursions on one day fraudulent charges showed up on my account 3 days later. Another person in my traveling party had the same thing happen to her. I also read on facebook of another gentleman having over $1300 in fraudulent charges. All there last week....all booked excursions thru Best Day Travel Desk. SANDOS CARACOL IS LAUNCHING AN INTERNAL INVESTIGATION AFTER OUR FACEBOOK COMMENTS.

Service = C-
- The best staff in the ENTIRE resort was at the Sports Bar. Roman, Alfredo and Socorro made our vacation at this resort AWESOME ! They were the ONLY staff that made us feel at home. Everyday they recognized us and took time to make us feel like Kings and Queens!
-90% of the staff ignored you as you walked past them. Not even a “hola”
-Received 2 calls from “guest service” (timeshare sales). 1st one on the day after we arrived @ 8am stating they had my “welcome package w/coupons” at the Guest Service desk. 2nd one 2 days before we were to LEAVE stating they had my “welcome package w/coupons” at the Guest Service desk. WHY couldn’t you give me my “welcome package” when I checked it at the front desk. Ohhh….you wanted to sit with me one on one to try to get me to go on the timeshare tour.

Shows = B

-nice theater shows
-entertainment staff at pool is lacking. Finally decided to take part in a dance by the pool. I was have fun and joking with the staff and the male staff member looked at me and said "respecto" I guess this means he wanted me to respect him. I AM ON VACATION TO HAVE FUN!

Food= C
- Buffet is HORRIBLE. Tables were never reset. You would walk in…get directed to a table and had to WAIT for a busboy to clean and reset a table for your party.
-Breakfast buffet was alright (how can you screw up breakfast) Omelet station took forever. One person/one grille making eggs. Usually had to wait 10 people deep for an omelet. Smoothie station never had fruit for smoothies. But….always seemed to have the cactus smoothie…hmmmm.
-My Family stayed 9 days/8 nights and I was entitled to 3 a la carte dinners. Went to book immediately and could only get reservations to the Italian 7 days AFTER arrival. I was told to check back every morning. I did and was able to get Brazilian twice. I have stayed at other all inclusive in Mexico and had no problems getting reservations. That is because they gave coupons out. You redeemed coupons for your reservations.
-Mexican Buffet was closed? Really? Only the International buffet was open.
- Italian/ Brazilian a la carte was very good. Very noisy in the Italian though.

Rooms = C
- Stayed in a Standard Room. I traveled with a group of 4 families. 1 month BEFORE I arrived I e-mailed Sandos requesting our group rooms near each other. I gave all the details and was assured we would be together. Well...4 rooms were together in the 37 & 38 block. I was the group leader and I was put in the 16 block. I immediately went to the front desk and advised our group should be together. I was told “I can put you over near your group on Wednesday “ (4 days AFTER arrival)
- upon arrival room smelled very moldy/musty. Called front desk for air freshener 3 times….never got it.
- maids are good just make sure you tip…although other rooms in our party got nice animal towels on their bed every night and we did not 

Beach = B
-Always seemed to run out of towels by 11am
-Beach sand beautiful …bring water shoes for the water!
-surprised they allowed “locals” on the beach selling their goods.
-snorkel off the beach is not good at all

Pool = A

- Very nice with a swim up bar

Hotel = 3 stars
-Overall nice place.
-IF YOU DON'T WANT KIDS AROUND ON YOUR VACATION DON'T STAY HERE. ITS A KID FRIENDLY RESORT. BUT IF YOU HAVE KIDS ITS A GREAT PLACE. NOT A PLACE FOR TEENS THOUGH. WE HAD 6 TEENS AGES 10 THRU 15 AND THERE WAS NO ACTIVITIES FOR THEM.

Room Tip: ask to see your room before accepting........

We were first time visitors to Sandos Caracol in February of this year. We enjoyed ourselves so much that within 6 weeks of returning home we booked to return in November. One of the best decisions I have made in a long time.

Before I go any further I must mention one very special staff member who is a definite jewel in Caracol's crown. Her name is Mariana Urtaza and she is a guest services manager. I had come to know Mariana through corresponding with her via Caracol's web relations department (webrelations.caracol@sandos.com). You can contact web relations to answer any questions you may have about Caracol and to do such things as pre book your a la cartes, thus eliminating the chance of a restaurant being booked up before you arrive. Mariana answered my questions and looked after my requests, and at all times made me feel like a treasured guest before I even arrived. It doesn't get any better in the customer service industry than that. We met with Mariana many times during our stay and I now consider her to be a dear friend. That girl has a smile that can light up a room! All of Caracol's management team is very recognizable (their pictures are up in many locations) and are definitely not trying to hide from their guests. There are various events set up at the resort which they attend so if you'd like to speak with one of them, they are easy to find. Resort General Manager Luis Ramirez is working very hard to make Caracol a #1 destination of choice! Also a special mention to Alex Nova as well. He is the “voice” of Caracol on Caracol’s Facebook page. This site offers a wealth of information and references and I’d highly recommend that you check it out before you visit Caracol. It is a very large resort with many things to do, and without a bit of knowledge beforehand you may miss out on all it has to offer. Alex will answer your questions or provide you with references to answer or address any concerns you may have. Many thanks to you Alex…it was our pleasure to meet you face to face as well!

On our first visit we stayed in an ocean view Royal Elite room which was lovely with a breathtaking view. This time we decided to book in the adult only Select Club. No regrets! Highly recommended for adult travelers!

Check in this time was seamless. A definite improvement from our first visit. We were met in the lobby by the concierge and taken directly to the Select Club office for check in. We were offered a welcome drink and were checked in before we knew it. While we were waiting for our bags to be delivered we had a lovely lunch at Fogo de Brazil. We were placed in building 68, the penthouse...a great location and a great room. It was huge, even larger than the first room we had stayed in. There was a large sitting area with patio doors leading to a very large balcony complete with Jacuzzi, which we used many times. It was clean and a pleasure to use. Just right for 2! The bedroom area was also very large with more closet and drawer space than we could ever use. The bed was very comfortable, complete with a down comforter and 4 pillows of varying firmness. We both slept great. The bathroom area had a vanity area with 2 sinks, a very large shower (could have easily fit 4), and a separate toilet area. We were greeted by welcome gifts in our room (champagne, vodka, rum, tequila & a fresh fruit plate) and a fully stocked bar fridge (beer, fruit juice, various sodas, chips & chocolate bars). Every day upon return to our room it was fully restocked. Our thanks to Emilio our housekeeper. He kept our room spotless and every day we were welcomed by a new towel "pet" on our bed, all of which now hold a special place in our photo album. I didn't catch the name of the young man who kept our bar fridge so nicely stocked but our thanks to you as well. We did have to opportunity of meeting him one day and our thanks to you for giving us some extra snacks to enjoy while we were lounging in the Jacuzzi. There were 2 a/c units in the room and a fan over the bed which kept our room at a comfortable temperature at all times.

As we had booked our a la cartes in advance through web relations we had no problem dining in the restaurants of our choice. Our favorite this time was the Steak House in the new Royal Elite Club. Both the food and the service were outstanding and the new building is beautiful. Our second favorite of our stay was the Riviera. The service was great, the food was delicious and the location on the beach was hard to beat. Our table was at the back of the restaurant by the waterfall…a truly unforgettable evening. We also dined at La Toscana and Fogo de Brazil which were also enjoyable……just not our favorites.

On our first visit we had only managed to see the latter part of the Thursday night fire show. This time we were determined to take in as much of the Xcalacoco experience as we could as we felt that we had missed out on something that was truly special. This visit we were at the Monday afternoon ceremony on the beach, the Tuesday evening ceremony at the cenote behind the Elephant Bar and the Thursday evening Fire ceremony where there is also a Mexican buffet. These shows are not to be missed! The work that goes into them is incredible. We were not able to make it to the Wednesday evening ceremony…..that will be a must for our next visit! We also saw the Michael Jackson and the acrobatic show during this visit. Both were greatly enjoyed.

As has been said by many, Sandos Caracol is a haven for families with children. As we had seen during our last visit, there is so much for families to see and do. A child’s paradise I would say. Since our family is grown and we’re back to traveling as a couple, let me say that it can be a paradise for adult travelers as well. The Select Club upgrade in my opinion is a must for the adult traveler. It offers an enhanced experience for adult traveler and a very welcomed escape from the hustle and bustle of the family areas. The Beach Club and Adult Beach area, not to mention the Select Club pool and outdoor Jacuzzi area….complete with drink service right to your chair add an extra special element to the whole experience. Not to mention that the pitter patter of little feet is nowhere to be found around your room………or the voices of hollering children when you are enjoying the night air out on your patio. As well, the a la cartes each have an adult only night. It makes for a very peaceful dining experience. On our first visit we only booked on adult only nights. This time due to scheduling, we book on both adult only and family nights. The difference between the 2 was night and day. Let’s just suffice to say that many people have never taught their children how to properly behave in a social setting. The waiters have the patience of saints…..I’ll say that much. Oh and one more thing...........PLEASE TIP!!!!!

I’ll wrap up my long review……..thanks to those who have taken the time to read it. Any questions you have I’ll be more than happy to answer. We now consider Sandos Caracol to be our “home away from home”. We have made lasting friendships with both staff and other guests and are looking forward to the day we can return. The last time it took me 6 weeks to book a return visit……….well as of the time of writing, I’ve been home for 3 days. Let’s see how long it takes me this time. Happy travels everyone!

Room Tip: For adult travelers, the Select Club is an upgrade that is well worth it. Bldg 68 is in a great loc...

Overall a pleasant stay.
1) Location. Really close to downtown Playa del Carmen (3 miles), but a taxi to or from will set you back 140 pesos. Took about 45 minutes from the Cancun airport.
2) The grounds are nice with about 70 small buildings where the rooms are, a spa, gym, tennis court, mayan ruins, cenotes, kids aquatic park. You can even swim in the cenote right next to the lobby. There are raccoons, coatis, cats and iguanas roaming the grounds. People feed them even though they're not supposed to. They are not aggressive.
3) Rooms. We went for the regular rooms in the general section (there is also a separate adult-only section). They started to feel a bit old, but there was a minibar (included), a decent shower and a no-fee safe. We had 2 double beds and asked for another one, which they brought and setup promptly. Our building number was 25 which is an excellent location, close to the beach, the restaurants, yet quiet with forest around. The room was cleaned well every day.
4) Restaurants. There were 2 buffet restaurants open for breakfast & lunch, and only one for dinner (the other one becomes a la carte). There are also a la carte restaurants. Book those as soon as you get to the hotel as they go quickly.
We had to line up and wait before getting a table at the buffet restaurant some nights. They are supposed to have another one but it was closed when we were there. Once inside the buffet they arranged most things in a line and that made people queue up quite a bit instead of being able to jump to different stations. The food was a bit repetitive and average but they always had grilled chicken, beef and fish. Their salads were quite nice, except I could never find avocado for some reason. A la carte restaurants were better, especially the steak one, which they opened in the royal club section while some renovation is going on. They had excellent service there and the food was really good.
The brazilian steakhouse was ok. We also went to the Mediterranean one which had nice fish. There is a snack place that opens for most of the day with just burgers, hot dogs and nuggets, but it was far from the beach. It would have been nice to have something also closer to the beach.
5) Bars are everywhere. They have reasonable alcohol selections and good service. One thing that seemed missing though was real fruit. They used syrups for flavoring.
6) Beach. It gets crowded. The palapas are gone by 8am but you can still find a shady spot since there are a lot of palm trees, but come 11am there is not a single beach chair available. The ocean is rocky, although there is a small area where you can get in without rocks. Not much to see if you snorkel right there. They put some huge sand bags in the ocean to cut the waves I believe. It's fun to stand on them.
7) Kids club. The best part of the hotel. They have a club that opens from 9am to 10pm continuously! They don't take kids for lunch or dinner, but they have some kids pool/beach outings (optional, kids can stay in the kids club building at all times, which has a nice play structure). Kids need socks to get in. The ladies running it make it fun for the kids and speak good English. Our kids wanted to go there on their own, although we were happy for them to go once or twice in the evening so we could have dinner on our own.
The kids aquatic park is nice with slides and things that splash.
8) Entertainment/Shows. The evening shows (8:30pm) were really good, better quality than some much fancier all-inclusive hotels nearby. The themes were Disney (cute), Michael Jackson (awesome), Circus (cool), Mexican & Mayan (cultural). The pre-show and post-show entertainment wasn't great although the kids liked the pinata that was on some days.

The hotel tries to be "eco", but it feels more business sense than really environmental. A few rooms have solar panels and the grounds are quite dark at night.

Overall even though we didn't go at peak time (and some buildings were being renovated) it still felt very crowded. There are too few common amenities, especially beach and restaurants, for the size of the resort.

In the end for the price we paid it was an enjoyable family vacation. Bring mosquito repellent.

Room Tip: Buildings 21-27 have a great location.

Just got back from this place a couple days ago and I will defiantly not be booking there again. Ill just put some things down and I will be truthful I promise.

Service = not very good
- When we got there they gave us a room with someone already in it. Took almost 2 hours just to check in cause they were so disorganized.
- Buffet service is brutal. never resetting tables until you sit down and they were always behind on putting out new food. You had to stand a wait awhile.
- Italian a la carte was good. service and food wise. Brazilian was bad. The servers just kind of looked at you when you came in and took a good 10 min to serve you. But food tasted great, once you got it lol.

Rooms
- Make sure to get an adult section room or royal elite, you wont regret it. Regualr room beds are terriable, my friends and there family did not have a good sleep all week. You get flat screens in the upgraded rooms to.
- there pretty clean, everyroom has nice showers and bathroom.
- maids are good just make sure you tip.

Hotel
-Over all nice place. they have a awesome sports bar and good pools. Once again you get a really nice pool when you upgrade.
-IF YOU DON'T WANT KIDS AROUND ON YOUR VACATION DON'T STAY HERE. ITS A KID FRIENDLY RESORT. bUT IF YOU HAVE KIDS ITS A GREAT PLACE.
-Staff isn't very organized but it's a mexican 4 star resort.
- Gym and Spa are Great.
-Beach is nice, no rocky sand at all

All in All i would't stay here again untill I have kids then I would. Hopefully that helps.

Room Tip: If you can make sure you book the adult only section. The beds in there are awesome. If you have to...

Our stay at Sandos Caracol, has been a special stay for the past 2 weeks. And the following people made this stay absolutely great.

Royal Elite:Tamara Furcas, Nora, and Mariana Urtaza
Royal Elite Restaurant:
Alejandra Dzib
Antonio Oliveros Delfin & Hugo.
Laguna Restaurant:
Virginia Chable Lopez
Noemi Lidia Pacheco.
Just to name a few. All of the people who work here are friendly, extremely helpful and always go above & beyond to make your vacation an adventure to remember. The rooms are very nice & comfortable, the housekeeping staff do an excellent job and the resort is always clean & tidy. There are quiet pools, & an Adults only pool, but we love the Royal Elite pool & beach the best.
We love this place and intend on coming back time & time again. As being members of this resort, we receive incredible service all around. We look forward to the next 2 weeks to meet even more great people.
Thanks, Trent & Kathy T.
