“Best holiday ever!”
Reviewed 27 November 2013 via mobile

Just returned from 2 weeks here can't say a bad word about it.

Hotel is huge there is a map showing you the full area, lobby is open plan but sheltered the dining room, theatre and sports bar lead off from here. Rooms are very clean and spacious, yes there a little dated but who spends there holiday in the room? Shower is powerful so it's lovely after a day at the beach. Food is amazing and of course it's a little repetitive they can't have a new menu for 365 days a year! Breakfast is anything from cereal, cheese, yoghurt, pancakes, full English, fruit, pastries (cinnamon buns are lovely) and an omelette station where they will make it to your request. Lunch is served in the pool restaurant, mainly pizza, pasta, chips, salad and then the evenings in the main restaurant they have themed nights so it depends on the theme the only one we found a little disappointing was the Mexican theme but still plenty of choice. The pool is lovely, refreshing when its hot, we tended to stay around the other side away from the pool bar as 1) the sun seemed to hit it first and 2) the pool bar was mainly full of loud idiots and despite us being a young couple was still annoying. Loungers aren't a problem you can get one no matter what time you go to the pool only thing you might find you won't necessarily get one in the sun on a hot day but you can move them around. They ask you not to reserve them but people did. The entertainment was fantastic on an evening if it was your kind of scene. There was a horror show, Las Vegas, Mamma Mia, Michael Jackson etc etc some are performed by the hotels entertainment team and others are brought in. They always did a kids part, then a ice breaker where they get members of the audience to participate and then the main show which usually finishes at 10.30pm. The staff are very friendly always saying "hola" no matter who they are and they work their backsides off daily, can't do enough for you. We did a few excursions through Thomson, the snorkelling adventure which was good but weather wasn't the best so visibility was poor and it was choppy waters, swimming with dolphins which was just amazing it is a must if you have never done it before, coco bongo which again is a massive must, gold member ticket and make your own way there in a taxi (only costs 90 pesos) then you can go early (10ish) and be front of the queue for the best seats, paradise island was our last day and to be honest I don't think it is worth the money. We didn't have the best weather as it was and there is nothing to do once your there, the facilities aren't clean and if it rains there isn't much shelter at all. We did go to Akumel which is where you can swim with the sea turtles, we made our own way there by getting a taxi to playa del Carmen (70 pesos) and a bus to Akumel (35 pesos). You can hire snorkelling equipment for the full day (153 pesos for 2) and it's much better then going out with a guide as you can do it in your own time might take a good look to find them but once you spot one you start to spot them all. The food was nice in the beach bar as well just remember America = HUGE portions. There are plenty of animals at the hotel and they don't bother you unless you feed them or have food and drink near you and they are cheeky and will take it off you, be prepared if you feed one hoards appear from nowhere and will follow you.

All in all I cannot wait to go back this is definitely the best hotel to make you feel like your in Mexico, despite the others being refurbished or modern, you could be anywhere with the Tequilla you know your in Mexico!

Stayed for 11 nights in October not sure my waisteline could manage 14 nights. Room large with two large double beds good shower didnt use bath.First floor overlooking garden mini bar and fridge ice machine on ground floor didnt find till second week.Would have liked kettle but didnt spend much time in room. Friends overlooking pool on main path did get woken a few times early morning by drunk residents returning from night out.Food good plenty of variety bit disappointed with Mexican resturant in Yucatan lacked atmosphere like the Hotel very bright and modern didnt like it at all only good point was on the beach. The Tequila had a much more traditional Mexican feel which we loved similar to the Riu Cancun have heard both described as dated but i would say traditional. Could do with a bit of a touch up here and there but nothing major. Grounds well kept lovely. Little animals very entertaining but watch your drinks turn your back and they will be up on the table helping themselves.Hotel very clean bar service good apart from one time friend asked for two beers got two Pina Coladas? LOL last time he went to the bar.Would have liked waiter service in bars and around pool but not a problem. Did get a lot of ice in drinks need to ask for little ice. Will make cocktails that are not on menu if they know what it is.Will make drinks stronger or weaker just need to ask. Stock up with beer mats from bar none on tables. Entertainment team work very hard evening shows very good although could do with a few new ideas Vagas Show, Micheal Jackson etc. A lot of seating outside for shows we had three nights of rain so undercover area very packed. Co Co Bongos good night out shame we ended our night out with Thompson at 13.30 just getting going. Swimming with Dolphins very good bit expensive. Hired car from hotel got good deal for cash didnt seem keen on us paying by card still saved 30 dollars. Went to Cancun got lost around town need to head for Hotel Zona for shops etc.Didnt look round shops much in Carmen did get hassled a bit went to Island by ferry similar story and shops there.Senior Frogs by ferry terminal good fun. Beach very nice fag butts apart very clean lovely swimming lots of fish.Plenty of sun beds shade from trees only.Pools very nice never to busy or rowdy big swim up bar loads of beds but you still get towels on front row beds by pools with people not turning up till late morning.Sad. Overall very clean good food and service

Room Tip: Near to Asian resturant facing away from pool close to everything and not to noisy top floor.

the flight was out of Manchester on the new dream liner, good leg room and food that you could actually eat, so a good start to the holiday. Transfer to the hotel was good and the welcome package had the hotel registration forms included in them so on arrival we had the all inclusive bands and the keys to the room in a very short period great start. No issue with the rooms cleaning staff did an excellent job even down to putting in extra towels at our request (only needed to ask once)
Here comes the moans the hotel has three restaurants that can be booked separated from the main buffet restaurant, to book them you need to be up at 6am so that you can be at the booking area by 7am other wise you have little chance of booking the steak house, the only way we managed to book the steak house was to complain on several occasions (who wants to moan on holiday) We also noticed that during the first week the quality of food was good but little choice, second week a lot of Brits had left and the Americans started to fill the hotel choice of food increased and they even started to serve ice cream around the pool and waiter service for drinks I will let you think that one over.
Front desk excellent we tended to deal with one person Luis and he solved each problem we had in a fast and efficient manner and a smile.
I will return for another holiday

Room Tip: No issues I think all rooms have their own quality

We stayed in Riu Tequila from 9th -20th November and it was even better that we could imagine. The stuff was super friendly and efficient! The room though it was a standard double room was pretty spacious with a huge king size bed. The room was cleaned up very thouroughly. Many thanks to Alberto for this! And he was making fantastic animals out of towels ))) Great location - very quite and 5min. walk or even less to the beach... The food was delicious and always fresh... 30 min. walk to a small town - Playa del Carmen where there's a bus station (ADO) and you can buy tickets there to Tulum, Chichen Itza, Coba and etc. The buses are very comfortable and it is much cheaper than taking a guided tour... So to sum up it was a real pleasure staying in this lovely hotel and this whole place is really awesome...So we seriously consider getting back next year :)

30 year old traveller at time, went for a friends wedding with a group of 45. Obviously we had a great time, a trip is only as good as you make it, if your relying on a resort to make the good time for you then good luck with that.

First off Playa Del Carmen is one of the coolest towns I've ever been too. I would go back in a second if there weren't thousands of other places to visit first. Its a $7 US taxi ride or 30 min walk from Riu resorts. I took the taxi everyday and walked once.

5th avenue is a great place with so much going on, shops, restaurants, clubs, beaches, etc. You can get absoultely anything you want there, silver, souvenirs, massages, party favours etc. Not to mention a nice burger from Burger King of McDonalds once your sick of resort food.

As for the Riu...... we stayed at the Tequila as my good friend was getting married and they choose the place. We payed $1200 to go the 1st week of April 2013. 1st off, yes it is a 10 minute walk to the beach, or you could luck out once in a while and get on the golf cart, but really who cares your on vacation and have a full drink to take for your walk. Next thing is that the Tequilla resort is the "party" resort of the 4 Riu's in the complex so if you want a quiet pool don't go to Tequila, if you want to have fun then go to the Tequila. The Palace is the nicest and most expensive and quietest. Now this is the 2nd time I've stayed at a Riu the other one in Cabo San Lucas Mexico (Riu Santa Fe) and I must say it felt like I was at the same hotel in a different city. The sports bar was the exact same, the disco same and same music over and over, entertainment same thing as any other resort - entertaining if thats your thing. I guees there's good and bad things to that, you know what your getting if you've ever stayed at a Riu.

Service is decent (tips don't really help at all) but you get a drink pretty easily anywhere on the resort. Food was pretty good. Buffet had lots of selection, Steak house was good, Asian was my favourite, Mexican was ok. Breakfasts are good. If you want food after 10pm your getting a burger, hot dog, or sandwich thats in a fridge in the sports bar that may or may not have been made in the last day or two. I would suggest eating before 10pm or head to town for food after that.

The "Mexican Monkey's" or whatever they want to call them are infact everywhere and I personally thought they were annoying and gross and should be taken care of. At night they are all over the place like racoons looking for any scraps they can find. Some people feed them and think they are cute and stuff but that only entices them and makes it worse for everyone. But really if this is what bugs you and makes you have a bad time, you probably can't be pleased by anything.

All in all, decent clean hotel that is quite big thus you need to do a lot of walking. Pool is warm big and lots of chairs. Drinks keep coming 24hrs a day. Food stops at 10pm unless you want a questionable burger/sandwich. Recommended for younger people that like to some excitement , middle aged people that are not looking for a quiet retreat, larger groups, etc. Beach is fantastic, though they could use a beach bar.

Only negative comments about hotel was customer service. They can be totally rude at the lobby and front desk. Manager was a complete joke with some of the issues regarding the wedding (charged $100 for a wine spill on one of the table cloths, didnt have seperate music area and dance area for wedding though charged in the wedding package for it). Didnt bother me as they werent my problems but they were not very professional dealing with the bride and groom. Personally I would not have my wedding there, but I think with any destination wedding thats the chance you take.

And being in Mexico without having Corona at the resort sucks.

All in all...
Beach 9/10
Food 8/10 before 10 pm, 2/10 after 10pm
Rooms 7/10
Cleanliness 8/10
Pools 9/10
Playa Del Carmen = must go but better resorts around. Good for price though.

We stayed at the Tequila from 07/11/2013 - 18/11/2013 arriving from Gatwick on the Dreamliner,
a superb plane & great flight. We were transferred without a hitch and booked into our room in a very organised, speedy, polite way and our luggage brought to our room within minutes of us entering it. Our room was very clean, spacious, plenty of storage space (draws/wardrobes) and a huge bed. The mini bar was well stocked with soft drinks and optics and kept full with a never ending supply. The beds were changed on a regular basis and clean towels provided every day.
(most days we were greeted with a animal created with the towels by the maid - nice little touch)
The restaurant had a varied menu and there was always plenty available, the waiting staff were brilliant and could not do enough for you, other options were available for eating, the steak house, a Japanese restaurant or Mexican (at the Yucatan sister hotel over the road), you need to book early for these to eat prior to 9pm.
The pools and grounds were kept spotless by the staff and the hotel entertainment team put on some great shows in the evening. We did have one night when the A/C went wrong in the entire hotel but this issue was resolved once it stopped raining and the engineer could make repair (was only a couple of hours well we all know water & electric don't mix to well )Our Reps Meredith and Kirsty were great and nothing was a problem and they even arranged for anti-mosquito lotion to be delivered from the local chemist. (Thanks Meredith - a Mexican national who knows how to sort our sensitive British skin out - Johnsons junior mosquito lotion - pale green in colour and about £3 a bottle - worked wonders - better than the incognito brought in the UK for £10.00). We went on 2 organised trips, Coba which was an eye opener and worth every £ and the other to Excerat a echo park alsovery good and a must to stay and watch the live shows. We took ourselves off to Tulam on the local bus from Playacar centre (about a 20 min walk) or £3.00 in a taxi (which I must add were very clean and the drivers were very good/helpful). We also went to the turtle beach (akulmel) walking into Playacr and getting a mini bus (from outside sky tours local office).
This was an experience a fully loaded mini bus plus extras standing, doing 90mph down the 307 whilst the driver was on his mobile - the beach was great though you could hire everything and anything from beach towel, snorkel, mask, flippers and probably even a boat.
And yes you actually can see turtles swimming in the sea in front of you, close enough to touch and Rays along with other fish (most of us only see at the local tropical fish farm at home)
A must for lunch is Lucys Café - at home if you saw it you would not even think about eating their
but the food was fresh and really tasty 10/10 and the staff great to.
The hotel was in general peaceful and civilised and the grounds had animal inhabitants - none of which bit or harassed you and it was nice to see living there to,
On a whole a terrific holiday. we wished we had booked for longer and wanted to stay.
From start to finish awesome hotel, awesome staff , awesome entertainment and would recommend without a doubt.
