After an 11hour flight from the UK we arrived very tired. Bun fight check in then left to find our own room which was a very poor first impression. Beyond that the holiday was excellent. Facilities, food, drinks, pool, staff, cleanliness all first class. Third time in Mexico and this hotel matched the others for excellent quality and value. Would certainly recommend. It's a lovely hotel in a great location. We would certainly go back again. It's just a shame that the staff on reception at both check in and check out let the team down otherwise it would have been 100 % perfect.

We traveled from November 30 to December 14 2013 for two weeks. First week was with a group of 8 and second week was just as a couple.
I was very anxious about travelling to Mexico and we had such a great experience that we are planning our next vacation there. Playa del Carmen is very safe.

The Riu Tequila was very clean and friendly. It had an authentic Mexican feel which made us feel very welcome. When visiting the much more modern Yucatan we didn't have the same feeling.

Staff was great. They all worked very hard and were very friendly. Samuel at reception was very helpful for anything we needed or any questions we had.

Great selection of drink choices and they had a helpful menu and suggestions. Raphael and Alexandro from the pool bar were a lot of fun.

Food was great and there was a variety every day, which is something we didn't expect for a two week vacation. We ate at the steak and Asian a la carts. We really enjoyed the Asian buffet.

They offer scuba diving demonstrations daily in the pool. My husband tried it and loved it and was able to complete his open water certification through the resort. He was very impressed with the safety and attention to detail.

Entertainment was great. The entertainment team was very friendly and they seemed to be working from morning until late at night.

The room was very clean and we often had to run into the room to grab something while it was being cleaned and we were very impressed. Our maid moved the beds daily and swept and mopped every day, even the patio. She left us a surprise decoration every day. The mini bar was refilled often. They were quick to respond to special requests for extra water and diet pop. Air conditioning worked great.

This resort seems to be the "party" resort but you can easily find a quiet area and relax. A lot of guests from the other Riu's come to catch the game playing in the sports bar or for the entertainment.

If the shuttle to the beach is full, it isn't a long walk. I've stayed on beach front resorts that I had to walk farther to the beach from my room.

I was a little intimidated by the raccoon like animals but they are harmless. I wish guests wouldn't feed them and cleaned up their fruity drink cups.

I suggest taking other's advice about booking excursions only through your vacation company representative.

We were at the Tequila for the first two weeks of January 2014. The hotel is very well set out, the food and service were very good, and the entertainment was at a better standard than you usually get ( entertainment song and dance shows put on by the hotel team ). We also ate at the other RUI hotels near by, and did cocktail pub crawls ( it rained a few days in the first week ) all for free on the same wrist band. We did the Cobar trip- where you can climb a pyramid , and went to CocoBongo's for a night out ( a tad pricey , But a good show ). We also took a ferry to the island across the bay , and had a super days snorkeling . The room was big and clean the staff do a great job.

Stayed at this hotel in Feb, could not really fault hotel in any way. Staff very attentive without being intrusive. Food and drink plenty full if you went hungry or thirsty you weren't staying here.
Beach shared with Yucatan and a bit crowded for me but wife liked it.
Overall not much to complain about and would certainly stay here again.
Just one complaint but only small is the rubber lining on bed -very sweaty!

Room Tip: Ask for room at back, plenty of peace and wild life.

A small group of us travelled here for my wesding . and what a fantastic choice it was. Have absolutely no complaints in this hotel. The staff were very friendly and accommodating. Food was excellent and with so much choice even the Fussiest eaters could find something. The night club on site is very dark and noisy inside (as expected) but even sat in the reception you can barely hear it. Absolutely amazing holiday and already booked to return this year!

We have just had a fortnight at the Tequila and it was brilliant.

Our room was cleaned and resupplied with towels, soap, etc every day and the drinks were replenished every other day. We never ran out of anything. We had the same cleaner throughout (Manuel) and nothing was too much trouble for him. Every day we were also welcomed by a different towel-scuplted animal.

The food was really good and soooooo much choice.
For breakfast, you can have cereal, yoghurt, fresh fruit, salad, cheeses and ham, sausages, bacon, scrambled egg, omlettes, fried bread, baked beans, tomatoes, different breads and pastries plus a variety of Mexican dishes.
Lunch and dinner has just as much variety and always included burgers, chips and pizzas.
We have a son who is on the autistic spectrum and on quite a restricted diet (no gluten, no dairy, no MSG) but we never struggled to find plenty of variety for him.
The waiters were very attentive.

We also found the rest of the staff just as helpful and they were always happy to make changes if something was not to your liking.

It is just a five minute walk to the beach via a tree-lined path owned by the Riu Group of hotels. The Riu Yucatan is right next door to the beach so we regularaly made use of their pools and their restaurants for lunch which was not a problem.

There was plenty of entertainment on offer but it didn't make the hotel noisy. In fact we found it very peaceful and even though the hotel was full throughout our stay it did not feel too busy and we always managed to find sunbeds when we needed them.

All in all we found the Tequila an excellent family hotel.

One thing that you need to remember is that the hotels are on land that used to be jungle and it is still surrounded by jungle. It is therefore not surprising that the local wildlife still treats the hotel grounds as jungle.
Apparently 2014 has been a good year for mosquitos so be prepared. We used spray repellant and bands that were sold to us by the Thomson's rep (not sure about these) but still got nibbled quite a bit.
There are also plenty of Coati wandering around. We had no problem with them and they reminded me of the urban foxes and raccoons. They would just scrounge left-overs from the bins and if you left food on your table round the pool. There were plenty of polite notices requesting that you do not feed them but some people ignored them so it is not surprising that people are pestered by them.

Ive just returned from Mexico last week. We went for a friends wedding on the beach and at first I was sceptical about going, because of some of bad history of Mexico however all I can say is that I so pleased we went. Mexico is a fantastic place, a cross between friendly Canary Islands and the US (obviously). Ive based this review on the Hotel and the area of Playa Del Carmen.

Firstly the hotel. Within the gated estate area its nestled around three other Riu hotels, Yucatan, Playacar and Palace. The Tequila is not beach side, but the walk is around 5 mins along a hotel only walk area (between the other Riu hotels) or there is a little golf cart that will take you there (the driver waves at everyone when driving past). The hotel has its own beach area with the usual Jetskis, Para sailing etc. Plus you can use the Yucatans pool/beach bar whenever you want. Within the hotel you have three 'premium' restaurants (Asian, Steak and Mexcian in the Yucatan), plus the normal main restaurant area most people use. The premium restaurants are free but have to be booked in the morning. The food choice is massive and I could say I nearly had something different every day, good quality also. The hotel staff are really friendly (especially the bar staff outside, who remembered what you had and I never had to wait more than a 30 seconds for a drink). There is always entertainment every night, with some good shows (although a down point a bit samey). There were also some professional bands every now and then. Theme nights also featured, we had a fantastic Valentines event with red balloons everywhere, sculptured ice swans etc. The daily activities around the pool were excellent also, with something for everyone like Bingo, Water Polo, Water Basketball etc. The one downside around the pool area is the number of what I think were Bandicootes. They aren't really afraid of people and can become a bit annoying after a while trying to get your drinks or food left around. But on the most part they leave you alone, I just gave them names after the minions :) But I was aware of these before I left so expected it anyway.

The rooms are what you would expect, flatscreen t.v, terrace area, optics in the bathroom (always useful). Beds were a little hard, but most foreign hotels usually area. The maids did an excellent job everyday and made some interesting towel animals.

There is also a 24 hour sports bar, which serves food and drinks all day.

The Playa area itself is really nice and I felt safe all the time. 4 mins from the hotel is a little shopping area, with Starbucks, pharmacy, souvenirs etc. There are so many activities to do around the area you would never be bored. We did Coco Bongos (a long night but definitely worth it if you like Music), Xplor which includes Ziplines, little buggys and swimming through the water filled caves, a catamaran excursion with drinks all afternoon and finally swimming with Dolphins which is self explanatory. Some of people we went with did the excursion to the Mayan villages, which I wont try and pronounce and really enjoyed that too. If you like these kind of things, take quite a bit of money because it all adds up (plus you need the money for the airport exit tax too).

All in this one of the most enjoyable holidays I have been on in a long time and would thoroughly recommend it to anyone.

Room Tip: You wont get a sea view in this hotel so don't try. Most rooms are in apartment blocks of 20 or...
