Probably the prettiest beach we have ever seen. Check in was smooth, rooms clean and well appointed, however, you won't find bathrobes or slippers if you're looking for them.
Dinner was formal attire ( long pants for men so pack more than one pair) and the dinner hour started with courtyard "cocktail specials" each day around 6. Food was average to good, but I'm not a big fan of buffets, so the specialty restaurants each day were right up my alley! Staff was friendly, polite and accommodating. We had a great time. There are other Rius within walking distance if you want more night life. There is a shopping plaza within walking distance so you really don't have to banter with the sales hype in Playa del Carmen if you don't want to.

Room Tip: court yard view was not available to us.

Just returned from an awesome week at the Riu Palace Mexico. My daughter and I normally cruise every year, but tried an All-Inclusive for a change and it sure changed our minds about our next trip. The grounds, facilities, service, staff, food were all excellente!! Whatever we wanted or needed, we were accommodated. Our room was great, love the patio area!! The workout facility does need to be updated and enlarged, way to small for the number of guests. We made some new friends and have plans to meet up with them again next year! The only thing I would do in the future is research the excusions more thoroughly, we had some issues, but it was not the hotel that made the mistakes. I picked up a few tips reading Tripadvisor reviews before the trip which were very helpful!! #1 Tip......bring tumblers/insulted mugs to get larger drinks at the pool bar, plus they stay cold longer!! #2 - Bring Immodium and if you get the Mexican flu (my daughter did!) go to the pharmacy and buy Rantidine (Zantac) for the stomach pains, tip from the very helpful Front Desk. Looking forward to seeing everyone again at the Riu Palace Mexico!

Beautiful location that is very well cared for. Pool water was freezing. Beach was okay. There is erosion of the sand, and were bags of sand to prevent more erosion. That is only something we can take up with nature. Difficult to sign out equipment for use at the beach unless you were up at the crack of dawn.
Lots of meal choices. Difficult to get into the ala carte restuarants, unless, you were up very early. Don Julian had lots of selection though. Grab a cab to head to 5th avenue. It is well worth the $5. Rooms are comfortable, but musty. Our daughter had a nasty fall at the beach, and the hotel was great about arranging a doctor to come to our room very quickly. A great experience.

We stayed at the Riu Palace Mexico from April 2nd to April 8th. The resort was beautiful and kept immaculate. The interior decor of the lobby was gorgeous with crystal chandeliers, marble floors, and old paintings depicting an era from when the Spainards came to Mexico. You can see the Spainish influence in much of the decor with scalloped wrought iron lights and railings all over the grounds. This was actually a smaller resort in comparison to some places we have stayed at but it was easy to get around the grounds and I enjoyed it more because it felt more comfortable. We got a great deal, 50% off the rates, for booking early but I wouldn't have paid the full price. I don't think it would have been worth it because my husband and I don't drink and eat a lot so basically we paid to stay for the location. We were upgraded from a junior suite to a full suite for free. The room was beautiful and spacious. I found the beds very comfortable. The only thing that bothered me was the smell of mustiness. When we got home I had to wash all of my clothes, even the clean ones, and air out the suitcases. Our refrigerater was stocked every day and if we wanted something more we just asked. Our room was a short distance to the beach. The beach was beautiful, clean, no seaweed, and the sand was nice. There were many palm trees to sit under if you don't like scorching in the sun all day. I am very fair skinned and burn easily. No beach service for drinks or snacks, you have to get your own. The beers and drinks were provided in smaller plastic cups. I did see some people bring their own cups and had the bartender fill them. Good idea if you don't want to keep getting up to get something to drink. No music on the beach. The area is very quiet and relaxing. The pools are small and getting older looking. They could use some updating with fresh paint and things. There are activities scheduled daily but we chose not to participate. For those of you who have children, I am not sure if there is a playground area, I didn't seen any swings. The entertainment was decent for a resort. They had different types of shows every night and also had a piano player in the lobby by one of the bars. There are four restaurants that you have to make reservations for every morning. When I am on vacation I don't like being on a time schedule so I ate only at the buffet. My husband ate at the Brazilian grill one night and said the food was ok. The buffets offer a large selection of different types of food and also fresh fruits and salad bar. The food was good but you have to remember they are buffets at a resort and your not going to get the same quality as you would going out to some of the restaurants in downtown Playa. Lastly, I would say the service was very good. If there is anything you need or want just ask for it, the staff will accomodate you the best that they can. I would definitely go back and stay here and recommend this resort to other people.

Room Tip: Check deals for the resort.

I am perplexed by the bad reviews. This hotel is 5 star all the way. The staff is so friendly and helpful. The food is great. The beach is fantastic, as is the pool area. Our room was fantastic, and was always kept clean. The front desk staff even organized a birthday party for my wife complete with champagne and a cake.
Don't hesitate to stay here...it's a fantastic place.

First I want to comment about some of those very bad reviews of this hotel:
1. Stolen stuff: There is FREE safety box in the room. You can use that! But we never felt like the cleaner or anyone was after our things. But then again, we did use the safety box.
2. This is NOT a hotel for children or kids. Some think it's a plus, some might find it a negative thing. It's more like hotel for more gown up people who enjoy finer thing s of life ;)
3. The towels were always clean (sometimes maybe with a stain or two, but always clean). And the bed linens were dry and clean (at least during our 3weeks stay).
4. The pool was small, when compared to the ocean!! But the pool was huge enough to get a good swim around it. And if you want to use bigger pool, you can use all the other pools in all the Riu resorts.

Some of our highest points of this hotel:
-The service was excellent! So friendly and helping.
-Lovely clean grounds.
-The beach was gorgeous (we saw the beach first time at 2007 when it was very narrow with the sand bags and we loved it then too).
-Lovely buffet, somedays the selection was ok, other days it was excellent! But everyday we did get loads to eat.
-The over all feeling of this hotel was just so amazing! Well, you just have to feel it yourself :)
-The gym room was nice + handy, next to the swimming pool. Maybe a bit small, but still adequate for our use (sometimes a bit hot/steamy if the A/C wasn't on)

Bad:
Well, only thing I can think of was the vegetarian food at the buffets. It would be better if the vegetarian dishes had their own section (now they were among the meat dishes + some other hotel guests used the meat takers to the vegetarian dishes). But even thou I had to skip some vegetarian dishes due to the meat takers in them, there was still plenty to select :)

And we will return and even bring our friends with us!

We stayed at Riu Palace Mexico for 2 weeks at the beginning of March 2011 and we loved it.
The concept of 24h all inclusive it is, in European standards, like an ultra all inclusive. In here you have drinks and food included all day and all night long. The minibar and room service is also free :D. Only the spa and the laundry service is payable.
The only bad thing about this hotel it is the fact that it doesn't have wi-fi in the rooms or on the beach, not even payable. It only has a free wifi area in the hotel's lobby, where you can also pay for Internet if you didn't bring your own computer.
Service was very, very good, cleanliness as well. The hotel is well maintained with nice grass areas and lovely clean fountains. At 8:30 each night there is live music (not very good singers, but nice for the atmosphere). Shows at night were also good, with lots of dances, and they had a different show each night for 2 weeks.
Food is more than you can eat, and we also had sea food specialties, champagne and special nights st the main restaurant (Asian, Mexican). You have access to all the Riu in the area, where you can also eat in the morning and at lunch. We visited all of them, and we also liked Riu Palace Riviera Maya, which is a bit bigger and with the same layout.
The beach is huge, with crystal clear water and white fine sand. We also had great waves in the windy days. One day we had a fiesta on the beach with salsa music played live and special food. Otherwise all days are really quiet on the beach and relaxing. It is fantastic to read a good book under a palm tree's shade.
The pool is kind of small, and it doesn't have a special entrance for disabled people, but there are plenty of loge chairs at the pool, and at the beach also. You can also use the pool at Riu Yucatan very close and really huge.
Rooms are big with 2 huge beds put together and a nice sitting area. We also had an umbrella in the room for rainy afternoons. They do nice towel arrangements, and put balloons and fruits in the room if you are celebrating something. In the bathroom you have a bidee next to the the toilet in separate area. A light in the shower would have been nice.
Playa del Carmen is 5 minutes away in a taxi (70 pesos or 7$). It is nice for shopping, very colorful and with nice cafe places.
We visited Xcaret, for which we took a taxi for 20 minutes and 14$. We then bought our tickets at the door for 69$ or 99$(plus). It is much cheaper than booking this trip through an agency (they charge you 30$ per person only for transport). I would recommend to do the Tulum trip with a taxi as well, especially if you have already been on an organized trip to Chichen Itza (which is worfy) and you had already listened to the Maya history lesson. It is much faster and cheaper.
To sum up I would definitely return to Riu Palace Mexico. I really enjoyed my stay here!
