“Outstanding Resort...Outstanding Vacation!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 21 April 2011

My college aged daughter and I spent 5 nights at the RIU Palace Mexico for spring break the end of March. My husband and I have traveled to the Playa del Carmen area numerous times and stayed in several different AI resorts (ie, Barcelo, Iberostar, other RIU properties) and this resort by far exceeded my expectations. In fact, soon after returning home we booked 10 nights over Thanksgiving!

The service was outstanding from the minute we arrived. I couldn't find something to complain about if I had tried. The staff pays so much attention to detail that they even remember what your favorite drinks are! No matter where you are in the resort they make you feel as if you are the only person at the resort. We never had to wait in line for anything except making reservations for the ala carte restaurants. By the way we ate at all 4 (if you are an early riser it is easy to get a reservation) and all were excellent. Our favorites were the Brazilian and the Fusion.

The rooms are spacious and yes a bit musty but your in Mexico! Our housekeeping services were good and most days our room was cleaned early.

We went to all the RIU properties except the Playacar. All very nice but the service at the RIU Palace Mexico was by far the best. The RIU Palace Riviera Maya is almost identical although newer. The pool is beautiful but we didn't think the beach area was as nice. We didn't spend much time there as there was a large crowd of very obnoxious high school students and their equally obnoxious parents who had taken over the pool. We did not have any issues like this at our resort but I guess that can be the luck of the draw during spring break.

This resort could probably use a bit of a face lift in a few areas but I will take outstanding service over brand new any time!

i am just back from 2 wonderful weeks abroad, where i stayed at the Riu Palace Mexico, dont know where to start, had the time of my life out there, im an 18 year old boy that travelled with my 22 year old brother and our parents who celebrated their silver wedding anniversary. myself and my brother love to party and weren't to sure what to expect, but when we got there we found the tequilla the place to party at night for all the youngsters and staying at the palace meant useage of all the riu hotels. our resort was also very lively with different shows and entertainment each night.

our maid was very good cleaning up after myself and my brother who always had a messy room, and our room was always spotless and very nice to stay in.

the food was very good being a chef myself, food is normally where i complain, but the buffet was really good, i loved it, so much choice, if you could not find atleast a dozen things you liked your crazy!!! i loved the food and service was phenomenal, onlyu complaint would be that at 10 in the morning when i normally rolled in for breakfast the service was poor and they just wanted you out, but thats probably my fault for drinking too much and not getting up early.
we tryed all the reastaurants and i went to the "krystal" 3 times and every time had the fillet steak, it was to die for, the best steack i have ever tasted! i loved it and so did the whole family!!!
entertainment through the day was good, it wasnt ongoing so those of you wanting a quiet stay will love this place but definetly get involed with the sports, such as water volleyball and beach volleyball! playing with ohmar, carlos christian and abraham the entertainers was amazing, those guys made my holiday so memorable, i cant thank them enough. abraham is a waiter that walks around serving drinks arounfd the pool and beach all day, he is a hero, always there to help and so so friendly, as were all the staff but him in particular!

the beach and sea were just to die for and it was truly just paradise wish i didnt have rto leave!

the real night life was in playa del carmen where myself and brother went to "coco bongos" the best nightclub ever, with an ongoing show, very busy and crazy, but so much fun, the other place is blue parrot which is a beach party, it was brilliant aswell!

missed out so much amazing things in this but i cant write forever. was so amazing just want to be back! only complaint is having to come home!

Room Tip: buy a one way ticket, you wont want to come home!

We stayed one week at the riu palace from March 31st through April 6th. I went with my boyfriend and another couple. We were very happy with the service, the grounds and the beach was beautiful. The resort is very well maintained! We enjoyed our stay thoroughly and overall we were very pleased with the resort. We had a few insignificant issues: the electricty went off a few times during the week but it was during the night. It came back on eventually. One day there was no hot water but we made due after all it was in the high 80s and a cool shower felt good anyway. Otherwise the rooms were comfortable and clean and the service was good. The food was delicious except we ate at the steak house one night and it was not as good as we expected. We did eat late and that could have something to do with it. The Japanese Rest. was good. The other nights we ate at the buffet. The food was delicious and the variety of foods was amazing. They really do a nice job there.
We would definetey go back to this resort. It was well worth the money and we were comfortable and very delighted that we enjoyed it so much. This was our first all inclusive. We were always greeted with smiles and a big Hola from all the employees. They seemed genuine and couldn't do enough to make us comfortable and happy.
The shows in the evening (we watched two) were very entertaining and well done. The resort is geared for couples and families. It is not a spring break sorta place which was appealing to us.
I think this resort is a solid 4 to 4 1/2.

Room Tip: Next time I would request a room on the 2nd floor.

Well where do i start, iv just come back to miserable england after two amazing weeks of pure luxory in Riu Palace Mexico,
First off dont listen to any bad reviews you have seen on this hotel im a well travelled person and i have never stayed in such an amazing place. it really is a palace. stayed at las americas in cancun last year and this beats it hands down,
Straight away from the moment we left our coach the service was brill. got a room upgrade due to our wedding which had a great view also like a fool i left my £500 new camera on the coach but as soon as i reported it the bell boy jumped on his bike (after failing to catch up with it by running) and caught up with the coach and saved my holiday from ruin. this is just one example of how brill the staff are, we never had an empty glass, always had a spotless room and they never fail to say hola:). the grounds are amazing, spotless.
The food is to die for, different choices at the buffet every night but they still keep the essentials, my favorate resturant was the brazillian the meat just melts in your mouth we ate there for our wedding meal and again the staff we faultless.
Easy to sum up the beach AMAZING!!
The pool is ok, nice a quiet compared to the yucatan/tequila hotels next door, but my favorite pool was the tequila as its surrounded by jungle/tropical gardens and had a good atmosphere.
Our wedding day was perfect it was so easy and stress free our wedding planner was real friendly and took care of everything, after the ceromony a waiter brought our party of 10 drinks while we had our photo taken and then we went to the cocktail/champaign reception where the waited on us hand and foot. playacar as a resort is amazing its a private community and the streets are spotless there is a small shopping centre 2mins up the road and playa del carmen 5 mins taxi ride up the road or 20mins walk along the beach. this is just a gorgeous hotel so clean and tidy i would strongly recommend it to anyone. before i go anyone who is travelling from england in april/may this year, the weather is beautiful dont listen to weather reports before you go they are wrong it gave for rain the first few days of our trip all loads of internet sites and it was gorgeous mid 30's for 2 weeks. any questions please contact me.

Probably the prettiest beach we have ever seen. Check in was smooth, rooms clean and well appointed, however, you won't find bathrobes or slippers if you're looking for them.
Dinner was formal attire ( long pants for men so pack more than one pair) and the dinner hour started with courtyard "cocktail specials" each day around 6. Food was average to good, but I'm not a big fan of buffets, so the specialty restaurants each day were right up my alley! Staff was friendly, polite and accommodating. We had a great time. There are other Rius within walking distance if you want more night life. There is a shopping plaza within walking distance so you really don't have to banter with the sales hype in Playa del Carmen if you don't want to.

Room Tip: court yard view was not available to us.

Just returned from an awesome week at the Riu Palace Mexico. My daughter and I normally cruise every year, but tried an All-Inclusive for a change and it sure changed our minds about our next trip. The grounds, facilities, service, staff, food were all excellente!! Whatever we wanted or needed, we were accommodated. Our room was great, love the patio area!! The workout facility does need to be updated and enlarged, way to small for the number of guests. We made some new friends and have plans to meet up with them again next year! The only thing I would do in the future is research the excusions more thoroughly, we had some issues, but it was not the hotel that made the mistakes. I picked up a few tips reading Tripadvisor reviews before the trip which were very helpful!! #1 Tip......bring tumblers/insulted mugs to get larger drinks at the pool bar, plus they stay cold longer!! #2 - Bring Immodium and if you get the Mexican flu (my daughter did!) go to the pharmacy and buy Rantidine (Zantac) for the stomach pains, tip from the very helpful Front Desk. Looking forward to seeing everyone again at the Riu Palace Mexico!

Beautiful location that is very well cared for. Pool water was freezing. Beach was okay. There is erosion of the sand, and were bags of sand to prevent more erosion. That is only something we can take up with nature. Difficult to sign out equipment for use at the beach unless you were up at the crack of dawn.
Lots of meal choices. Difficult to get into the ala carte restuarants, unless, you were up very early. Don Julian had lots of selection though. Grab a cab to head to 5th avenue. It is well worth the $5. Rooms are comfortable, but musty. Our daughter had a nasty fall at the beach, and the hotel was great about arranging a doctor to come to our room very quickly. A great experience.
