“Welcome Home!”
Reviewed 24 February 2013

Welcome home! That is how we were greeted at the front entrance upon our arrival and for the ensuing 7 days the staff went above and beyond to make every aspect of our vacation special. The resort facilities are unbelievably clean, the food was wonderful and our room was spacious and clean. The beach was the nicest we have ever been to in Mexico with an abundance of chairs. (One day there was a shortage and the workers brought loungers over from the Riu Yucatan next door).

The buffet restaurant has a very wide variety of delicious food. We went to two of the specialty restaurants (Italian & Steak House) and enjoyed them, but decided that the buffet gave us a wider selection and we could avoid the reservation hassle.

If you want to get a reservation at one of the specialty restaurants, please be aware that the process begins at 8AM (not 8:30 as it states in the book in the rooms) and plan to be there by 7:45 to get a place in line. It took us 3 attempts before we successfully booked the steak house.

For those with a sweet tooth, be sure to try out the wonderful treats at the Cappuccino Bar...chocolate suckers, double chocolate cupcakes! WOW!

The resort was at 98% occupancy the week we were there, yet it never felt crowded.

We have been to Riveria Maya/Playa del Carmen area over a dozen times and always enjoy trying different resorts. This is one we would DEFINITELY return to.

Room Tip: We paid extra for what Apple Vacations called a "Superior Junior Suite" which afforded us...

I have just returned after spending 2 weeks at the Riu Palace Mexico stayed 6-20 february i went with my husband and 2 friends. Well what can i say the hotel is fabulous and very clean the rooms are spotless and the staff go round cleaning the hotel all through the day all the staff from the cleaners to the management were very friendly and helpfull anything you need you only have to ask and they will get it for you.The staff work very hard and long hours but they always have a smile on their faces and make sure that you are looked after very well. The food was very nice and there was a good choice the only thing that let the hotel down for us was the evening entertainment it wasnt very good but saying that it was still the best holiday i have ever had and will be going back again to see all the staff that helped to make it a most enjoyable holiday.

Room Tip: try not to get a lower floor room your clothes will feel more damper.

The newly renovated resort was done very well.....Loved the magnified mirror on the vanity. The bed was very comfy, access to the outside balcony was easy and nice. The entire resort was very clean and the service was great. The pool areas were very nice with easy access to the bar. Chairs were fairly comfortable with many available. The 24 hr/lounge was nice and convenient....could get a drink or snack at anytime.........However, the way that the dinner reservations were handled was terrible.....Not knowing this before we had no clue about how and when to do this reservation process....Here's how it went.....you go to the theater area between 8-10am for reservations for that evening......ok so far.....well, when we walked in about 7:45 am only to be surprised at the shear number of people sitting around.....still ok, at 8:00, a nice man and lady walk in....the lady then hands out numbers.......well, it was like a herd of cattle moving toward food.....so regardless when you showed up.....you again took your chances on getting a low number.... then the process was slow.....because they only have 5 restaurants in the resort, your chances were pretty slim to get your first choice....and we noticed that each evening there were empty tables......they did offer 2 sittings, early and late......we felt like we wasted so much time going though this process that we ended up not going to all of the restaurants.....the good news to this is they did have a buffet that was open for breakfast and dinner......and it offered a wide variety of food and was very good. Another thing that we didn't like was all men had to wear long pants to dinner....Again, we could have dealt with that, but we were not told about it before we left....so my husband had 2 pair of long pants that he alternated for the 10 day stay we had.......The new deco was a bit tacky, specially for someone who isn't fond of purple! In our room, although fairly spacious lacked ample leg room in the toilet room.....we did like the fact that the toilet was separate but left only about a 2inch gap when the door was closed.......Shower was fantastic but the tile floor was very slick, especially after showers....so slick that we had to put towels down on the floor just so we wouldn't fall......the vanity area did have 2 sinks....which we could have dealt with one an used that space for our toiletries........we had to remove the sink stopper because the water wouldn't drain out after brushing teeth, etc.....had a decent flat screen TV.....but no program to see what channel a show was on......The maids and workers were all friendly and accommodating........Loved that they served lunch on the beach daily.......We were truly impressed with the cleanliness!

My husband and I took our adult children , their spouses and our 1 yr. old grand daughter for 2 weeks at the end of January. We all had a wonderful time at this resort. The ages of all of us ranged from late 20's to 60 yrs.
Rooms - recently renovated, comfortable, clean, great set-up with a small sitting area and balcony. Completely met our needs. Fridge restocked daily.
Staff - exceptional! Friendly, went beyond what was expected of them routinely. Everyone always remembered our little grand daughter's name.
Food - best we have experienced at a resort. Varied, delicious, chefs preparing on the spot so , if you preferred, you could have things made exactly as you wanted it right on the spot. Champagne and orange juice and Bloody Mary set-up made it all so festive and fun. We all enjoyed the specialty restaurants. Service, food and settings were lovely. Each of us had a favourite!
Activities - suited us - excellent golf nearby, tennis, great gym, aquasize classes, pools and of course Playa is always fun to wander through. Day trips to other beaches were an option the "kids" took in.
Setting is beautiful. Ocean and beach is perfect. The water was rough a few days so swimmers were discouraged, of course. This might be the only resort that people did not put towels on chairs to save them for the day. (a practice that is so annoying). There were more than enough chairs (in sun or shade).
We were at this resort when it wasn't completely full so that was a unexpected bonus. We had rooms open to the court yard which was very nice. The entertainment at night could be heard but that was fine with us. We often just sat on the balcony and listened.
The "activities" at this resort were also well handled. No loud speaker announcements through the day. The staff did not try to drag you out to do some silly , somewhat embarrassing thing in the middle of the pool.
This was the right place for a special family holiday that we were all excited about.

Room Tip: Looking towards courtyard offer a nice setting. Avoid balconies with cement walls (can't see any...

New decor is a little tacky but cleanliness and sunny openess made up for it. The location can't be beat. Love playa car because u can walk to town on safe street or along the beach. Playa car area has about 10 resorts in addition to private homes/condos. The area is very safe and the riu palace guests can easily use other riu resorts. We would get the entertainment schedule for each and just walk over to each resort. The palace Mexico is by far the most upscale and cleanest. The new decor is not Mexican looking but is modern. The housekeeping come twice a day, waitstaff unbelievable!! Entertainment is very good with same amazing service. Good wifi most places, clean and gorgeous beach, comfortable beds, food was very fresh, good variety and presentation was clean and beautiful. Spa/workout room was nice although more hot tubs would be nice. There is no loud rowdy music at pools which we preferred. You could always go to the other resorts for that and then return to the tranquility. One drag was getting a ticket every morning to sign up for restaurants. It was disorganized and annoying but not such a big deal. All the restaurants were good and nice to be waited on as opposed to buffet. You can't go wrong with this resort for the reasonable cost for all the amenities. Loved it and would def recommend!

Room Tip: Email management. Tips go a long way. Slide a $20 at the check in counter-you'll be amazed at...

This resort have been renovated in 2012.

It is the only one ofthe Riu in Playa Del Carmen with a beach bar.

The new room are purple and white. Realy modern. You might like or not this new design. The Bath is in the middle of the room. You will have the bathroom isolated behind a small door. If you are going with friend, the shower and the bath is maby not appropriate but if you are going with you husband/wife or with you kids this should be fine.

Stayed here for 4 nights (Feb, 2013) with wife. Have stayed at other Riu hotels in the past.
Hotel was filled with mostly adults as compared to neighbor Rius (Tequila and Yucatan). Made for a very nice, enjoyable stay. Hotel was full however would not know it from the pool and beach. Always lounges available ( prime spots ). Towel reserving a non-factor despite a holiday week visit. The staff was incredible. Aside from front desk (will mention later), they work hard to please every guest in any way possible. Had a chance to speak with a few and found they (the employees) tend to stay and are treated well. German -13 years, Ana - 11 years, the head of the piano area - 10 years and they continue to smile and work very hard to accommodate guests.

E-mailed the hotel twice months prior to arrival for room request (2nd or 3rd floor, king bed, closer to beach, facing courtyard). Of course they did not know anything about this on checkin. Gave a room on outside (zero view) with 2 separate beds. Went back to lobby and at least they gave us a king bed after.

Front desk staff is hit or miss and manager really should address this. The entire hotel has a wonderful staff, yet the front desk crew vary greatly. At least smile, welcome the guest, instead of being negative about things. Again, this was certain staff members at front, not all. Little interactions with them (ie, change money, info on night show etc) seemed like a chore for them.

All in all, would most definitely stay again. Most staff go above and beyond for the visitors. A very pleasant stay.

Room Tip: 2nd or 3rd floor (room numbers start with 10 or 20 on these floors) Away from music, meaning get r...
