“Second incredible return to the Riu Palace Mexico!”
Reviewed 1 August 2014

The boyfriend and I stayed at the Riu in early April 2014 for 6 nights and we only have rave reviews for the resort and its wonderful staff. This was our second time returning to the Riu Palace Mexico (Please see our previous review for more details). We last stayed there in October 2013 for 6 nights and both times, we had an unforgettable vacation!

Arrival: We booked our shuttle transportation through Travelocity and arrived at the resort after about an hour ride from the airport. Imagine our surprise and delight when Manuel (the best doorman EVER) greeted us with “Welcome Home, Amigos”. They actually somehow remembered us from our previous trip. You can’t beat that amazing hospitality. On top of that, they cheerfully gave us a tropical drink while we checked in, which was a breeze. Like the previous trip, our room was on the first floor and close to the beach. Our patio faced trees and the resort next door, but this did not affect us as we did not spend a lot of time in our rooms except to get ready and to sleep. Being on the first floor also means not having to go up and down the stairs so we were quite happy with our room.

Weather: It rained a couple of times while we were there but each time only lasted for a couple of hours. The staff worked diligently to mop the grounds because the next day, you would not have been able to guess it had rained at all. The rest of the week was comfortably warm.

Remarkable Staff: Everyone at the Riu is always greeting you with a smile and go out of their way to make your stay truly amazing. The Riu hospitality is above and beyond comparison. Everyone from the bartenders, to the front desk, to the entertainment staff is always kind, friendly, and helpful. Shout out to Manuel for making us feel at home and to Francisco in the restaurants for providing superb service to us throughout the week.

Beautiful Grounds: The grounds are kept meticulously clean and spotless. At any point in the day, you will see someone cleaning something somewhere. I suppose the décor is a matter of preference but we personally loved the décor. We thought all the décor from the guest rooms to the main lobby and restaurants were very modern and chic.

Stunning Beach: The water is calm and the most clear shade of turquoise with long stretches of soft white sand. There were no rocks or seaweed in the water as we have seen elsewhere. The pools were nice as well, but with a beach this gorgeous we’d rather spend every day swimming in the ocean. There were always plenty of lounge chairs and shade under the palm trees. This was the most beautiful beach we have ever been to.

Delicious food: The buffets are extensive with a wide selection of food that is not only beautifully displayed but also delicious. There is only a specific time frame in the morning each day that you can reserve a spot for the specialty restaurants. So if you miss that time frame, you're out of luck. But the food in the buffet is so good, you don’t feel that you are missing out much. We were able to dine in the Steak restaurant, Krystal fusion restaurant, and the Italian restaurant and all had great presentation and tasty meals. The Cappuccino Bar in the lobby was my personal favorite place to relax at night, enjoying the delicious drinks and desserts, while listening to live classical piano.

You would really have to go out of your way to find minuscule fault with this resort.
We are beyond excited to be returning to the Riu Palace Mexico for two weeks in August and know we are set for yet another unforgettable experience. Book your trip confidently. See everyone there!

We researched Mexico hotels thoroughly in advance : would it be safe (yes, we felt safe throughout, even on private tours and independent outings) ; would the standards be good (resounding yes!). This was a perfect hotel for our family (two teenage daughters who stayed in their own adjacent room). From our arrival the staff were outstanding, always friendly, never stuffy and extremely attentive. The rooms were very well appointed, bright, clean, large and modern (yes, bath in open is unusual and toilet cubicle a bit small). We were delighted to be given a free room upgrade due to our silver wedding anniversary (many thanks). When family friends arrived a few days later Reception managed to allocate them rooms very close to us (great). The hotel accommodates 800 guests, we never felt that we had to queue, staff were always attentive and service was prompt; all facilities coped admirably with the number of guests.
Food throughout was outstanding. The range of choice is superb and amazing. It varies a bit each evening too, which is nice. We also tried a few a la cartes : the steak was brilliant; the Fusion average and Japanese poor. The wine in all the restaurants is average at best and could be improved. All other drinks were very good, although the soft drinks are very sweet and a diet lemonade would have been nice. The teas and coffees are great and I really enjoyed the bedroom coffee machine before breakfast each day. The bedroom fridge was restocked daily - brilliant! Also, lots of bottles of water supplied daily. The beer and lager were most refreshing and the cocktails excellent. We felt the "Capuchinno" coffee, tea and cake bar was superb (brilliant milk shakes!) and we also enjoyed a pre-dinner drink in the adjacent piano bar (good pianist!).
The pools are extremely clean and well maintained (we saw cleaners with snorkels cleaning underwater!). The beach and sea are simply superb - paradise! This is the first hotel we have stayed in which never had a sun lounger issue!! There are loads!
The gardens and grounds are beautiful and immaculate.
We were concerned in advance about mosquitos, but they weren't as bad as we feared. I think they spray the site regularly. However, we did apply spray each evening before going to the (outside) bar/ restaurant/entertainment, so bring a strong one (50% DEET).
No pressure to tip unless you wish to do so. At the end we made sure we did because we know they are lowly paid in Mexico and the staff (yes, ALL of them) could not have tried harder or been nicer. They are a real asset.
We played tennis early in the day a few times (free rackets and balls - nice touch - book one of the two courts at Reception) BUT it was VERY HOT!!! Nice courts.
Our younger daughter really enjoyed joining in with volleyball, aerobics etc. if you didn't wish to, no pressure. We booked reef snorkeling with the RIU Yuccatan (adjacent hotel) beach sales point, an excellent group experience with full equipment provided, all ages enjoyed this guided swim.
In the evenings some of the music groups were very good and better than average hotel groups!
We went on a private tour to Chichen Itza ("Go with Jerry") which was excellent (900 US dollars for 8 people all day, fully incl with lunch). Highly recommended despite the long drive (2.5 hrs) and early start. We wanted to see some of the real Mexico and Jerry was a great guide who gave us a brilliant introduction to the country. Much better than the standard coach tour!
We walked to Playa Del Carmen a couple of times along the beach (about 30 mins) and enjoyed looking round. It's quite a large shopping town. We got taxis back (£3.50 ish).
We were a bit miffed to have to pay £45 each, incl children at the airport to leave Mexico. That's a big surcharge! Be ready for it!
In summary, this is a fantastic hotel in a beautiful setting and a fascinating country. It has very high standards, is spotlessly clean, serves excellent food and offers wonderful, attentive service. From what we saw and heard of the others, we chose the best one!!!!

Room Tip: There are 3 floors. The best rooms seemed to be away from the entertainment area, nearer the pools a...

Spent 2 weeks here been to rui tequila facing here a few times and loved it but found rui palce outstanding. The hotel is modern comfortable and very clean, hotel staff from reception to gardeners the most pleasant friendly people I have met. The buffet restaurant was very very good lots of choice and the food always hot. Al a carte restaurants only tried the steak restaurant and the Japanese, both very nice but to be honest I preferred the buffet restaurant. Pools excellent, entertainment staff brilliant never to much in your face. Beach beautiful, a waiter comes around with drinks for you so you don't have to leave the beach. Lobby bar lovely for a quiet drink before dinner. I can't recommend this hotel enough. Hope to return very soon. You could get a taxi for 80 pesos about £4 to playa del carmen shopping but we used to like the walk takes about 40 mins.

Room Tip: I would stay in any room as the hotel is not to big so anywhere would be fine.

We are just back from staying here for 2 weeks and I can honestly say it is the best hotel we (my husband and daughter13) have stayed in so far . The food was excellent with plenty of choice for everyone. The staff were so helpful and friendly and nothing was to much for them they always had a smile on their face. Room were always cleaned every day and the grounds were kept beautiful. Entertainment was good and the animation team were fab, so friendly and always remembered your name. They didn't hassle you during the day if you didn't want to join in the daily activities which there was plenty of choice. Could honestly say we will definately be going back there lived every minute of it .

The hotel bars are very good. Restaurants are by reservation. You must sign up each morning by 10:00 am in person. Japanese restaurant is less than desirable but the others are pretty good. The Mexican is by far the best- they are open for lunch as well. Hotel is kept very clean and the staff are helpful. Definitely request a room with a higher room number than 100. They have no view and are in a hallway that is inclosed. We were in 84 and it smelled so bad. Requested to be moved and were not able. They did put deodorizer in at our request but the stench returned the next day. Our 3 daughters were in the room next door and their room smelled as well but not as bad. They must be located very close to the sewer line or something. The room definitely put a damper on things. Overall we did have a good time but most likely would not return.

Room Tip: Choose a room number higher than 100!!

What is not to love about this hotel.
It has been renovated and it is absolutely fabulous. The food is out of this world, really first class. This really is a five star hotel. The staff are so attentive.
The reception area is always deserted which seems to indicate that everyone is happy and got nothing to report.
There were a couple of times we needed something, like the batteries were low on the remote and the plug in the bath wouldn't stay down. Within minutes these were sorted.
The beach is amazing and the sea is the clearest I have ever seen.
Went to see the Palace Riv Maya down the beach but it didn't seem nearly as nice but that hadn't been refurbished yet.
I have to say this is the best holiday we have ever had.
Thank you

Room Tip: We stayed in a Junior Suite and the one downside was that there was no view. Only a tree.
