I had never been to a cenote.....what an unexpected treat.
We had been out in the heat of the day looking at chizen Itza, and were hot.
To dive into this "sink hole", was about as enticing and refreshing, as it gets.
GO!!

We stopped here on our way back from the Coba Ruins and really enjoyed ourselves. We rented snorkle gear and swam in the underground natural caves (there are bats flying around so beware). It is a little touristy but we did not mind since it was an easy visit from Coba or Tululm. They have fish and slider turtles in the water and it was a very fun experience for my kids and us!

Chaak Tun is close to Playa Del Carmen and is relatively unknown so it is less crowded. You take a taxi to the other side of the highway and take a ride into the jungle. the cenote is about 15 minutes from the center of Playa Del Carmen. the people are great - very professional and helpful. there are lockers for your stuff and then they take you with a guide down into the cenotes. the entry fee is $30 US including guide and waterproof light and lifejacket. the first cave is small and is really for getting used to the relatively cold water. then they take you into the much larger cave system and you get to swim into the stalactite covered caves and see the cave roof and underground formations. really a great tour and an unusual experience. Highly recommended. Our guide was Santiago and he was excellent.

I suggest to everyone to see this cenote. To reach it from the city center of Playa del Carmen you have to pass trough some unpavement road (now the build a new asphalt street.)
The place is really amazing and the i suggest to ask for Santiago as a guide! He is a funny guy who gonna explain you all the secrets of this caves. The tour is more or less 1.30 hours long and in loco is available to rent all the necessary equipment. In comparison to Gran Cenote this place is a way much better.

We went here after a morning of swimming with the turtles at Akumel Beach - it was OK!! There's a cliff to jump off into the fresh water - a cave to swim into and fish to chomp gently at your feet !!! Not much else there and it was quite busy - not realy my thing but it was different
