“Beautiful Resort”
Reviewed 8 June 2012

I have just returned from a 14 day stay at Paradisius La Esmeralda. We are members of Club Melia and stayed in a one bedroom suite. There were only two of us on the trip so the room was quite adequate, even spacious. The resort is very well laid out and we found sufficient activities to make our extended stay pleasant.

The food, as many have said, was excellent. We did not visit the extra fee, Passion, restaurant but all of the others had a varied menu and excellent food. The drinks were also of good quality and plentiful and although we are not wine connoisseurs, we found the included wine list to be very good.

The highlight of the trip was the staff. Without exception every member was friendly and responsive which made our vacation. I want to cite Enrique and Rafael at the Hadar restaurant as being outstanding with their friendly service every morning during their stay. I wish to make special note of Lolita of the Club Melia office who was invaluable in helping us work out a problem with an upcoming vacation trip and whose attitude and spirit were outstanding.

As others have noted the beech is narrow, and a major portion is virtually unusable because of rocks. The ecologically maintained mangrove section between the resort and the beech does shelter mosquitoes but we only had difficulties with them on one evening after a day of rain and the staff at the restaurant furnished repellent helped both us and them survive the evening.

I enjoyed the resort very much, would definitely go again.

Roy and Leonida from Maryland

Room Tip: We did not have a swim up room and it seems most of those who did did not use them very often.

We just got back yesterday after a 5 night stay at the Esmeralda with our 2 young children (ages 3 and 5) and, having stayed now at 10-12 AI resorts up and down the Mayan Riviera coast, I can say this is the most luxurious family-friendly property yet.

The PROS:
1. The grounds, rooms, pool areas, restaurants and bars...everything is immaculate and has a very high-end feeling. While the overall feel is very contemporary (not terribly Mayan or Mexican), it is also very high end, luxurious and hip.

2. The service and staff are beyond and previous experiences we have had, even at the adults-only places.

3. The food. We had read before hand that the food was good, but for an AI, we kept shaking our heads each night after trying the different restaurants. The buffets were very nice and the lunch fare served by the pools is nice, but we had several dinners that were hard to believe we were at an all inclusive.

4. Best margarita I have had down there, made by the legend J.J., our bartender at the swim up bar at the Esmeralda pool (probably had something to do with the Don Julio Reposado!)

5. On and on...great shows at night, smaller venue in the Gabi Club but you felt like you were right in it, the ladies in the Kids Zone (gracias Natalia and Memo and others!) that watched our little guys on numerous occasions, Liliana in Concierge (who had medicine delivered to me at the pool after ordering it for me from a local pharmacy because she did not want me to have to interupt my vacation by leaving the property to go get it myself!)

THE CONS:
Only a few reasons I did not give this place 5 stars, but they are all fixable so I hope Senor Mondragon, the Quality Manager will get them fixed by the time we return in Nov 2012!:

1. The Kids Zone closes from 5pm to 8pm and then reopens for only 1 hour from 8pm to 9pm. For parents dying to get a couple of hours alone to enjoy a drink at the Gabi Club and then take in one of the awesome restaurants without the kids, 60 minutes from 8-9pm does us no good. So, we decided to get a babysitter for our room (even though no matter how nice a place you still cant help but feel a little anxious). Unfortunately we could not afford more than one night of this because the hotel charges $40 per hour for two kids plus a $10 fee and we of course gave the young lady a tip. So 3 hours alone (that is the minimum) cost us almost $150. That is WELL more than it recently cost us to do the same thing at the Grand Wailea in Maui. I asked why the Kids Zone could not stay open or why the rates were so high and of course could not get any answer. For parents wishing to have a few nights out, this is a huge bummer and really caused some frustration for us.

2. As others have noted, the mangroves are dense around the hotel and the mosquitoes can be gnarly...bring bug spray...especially down by the Gabi club, walkway to beach, and beach, in the evening.

3. Check in was quite slow (as others have noted), not a huge deal, and they really need to stock more change at reception so you can break large bills in order to have small bills to tip with....but hey, now I am clearly reaching here.

All in all, if they were to fix the Kids Zone / babysitting thing, we would probably come back here from now on. I am the type that always wants to try new places down in the Riviera but this place is close to perfect. If you have any specific questions, feel free to shoot me a message on the T.A. email...

Buen viaje!

Room Tip: If you want a view of the ocean, you'll have to be on the highest (4th) floor

Dear Mr. D.

Thank you very much for sharing your experience at Paradisus La Esperalda with us and with future tourists on Trip Advisor.

We are glad to read you had an overall pleasant stay with us while you enjoyed our LUXEclusive plan with the variety of restaurants, bars, activities, entertainment options and the warm service provided by the staff, especially from Natalia and Memo at the Kids Zone, J.J. at the swim up bar and the outstanding assistance from Liliana, from our guest service department.

Please be sure we took in consideration your comments regarding the Kids Zones´ schedule and the baby sitting service, the managers involved are aware of those opportunity areas to take the actions they consider necessary.

We appreciate your wish to come back to the Resort, and I am sure for your next visit we will deserve a 5 stars rating. See you in November!

I recently spent a week in this beautiful resort. I found it to be warm and friendly, wonderful
accomodations, The best food I have ever enjoyed at an all inclusive resort.
Their service is 5 star, their food is 5 star, the only draw back I have with this resort is that
it is surrounded by mangroves. There is no view of the ocean, unless you are on the 4th floor.
Due to the mangroves the insects were very active, and insect repellent is a must. If you don;t
mind not seeing the ocean, or ocean with alot of seaweed then you will enjoy this resort.
They have several pools and their grounds are beautiful. The entertainment was alot of fun.
Yes I would stay here again, because of their wonderful staff and beauty of the resort.

Room Tip: If you can get a swim out room, they are great.

Dear guest,

Thank you very much for your review from your last stay at Paradisus La Esmeralda.
We gladly receive our guests´ comments after living the Paradisus experience. We are pleased to know you enjoyed all the facilities, the food and beverages at all our restaurants and bars, and the warm service provided by our staff.

At the Yucatan Peninsula we have a tropical – humid weather, this specific climate is always accompanied with some mosquitoes. Nevertheless, we are working to minimize this situation, through our maintenance department, fumigating room building areas, restaurants, open areas including near the mangrove, which is where they live. In addition to susceptible guests to mosquito bites, we have mosquitos repellent available at our boutiques.

Once again, thank you very much for your notes and will be waiting for your return to this little piece of Paradise.

Great service, great food, great staff...there are loads of restaurants, so if you are planning to stay a week or so, you will find lots of different options for dinner, great food and a great buffet where they cook in front of you...quesadillas, guacamole, tacos!! The rooms are perfect, they have a jacuzzi outside on the terrace and a hot tub in the bathroom. At check-in they offer you the Family Concierge service with an extra fee but it's definitely worth it, you receive amenities for the kids, a funny cookie every afternoon and a concierge that helps you in EVERYTHING you might need, Dalai was our concierge and he was just amazing.

My husband and my parents just returned from a wonderful stay at the Paradisus. The all-inclusive was a new experience for my husband and me and we were very impressed with the 5 star quality restaurants. We tried all of the restaurants with the exception of one and I can't say enough good things about the quality, the presentation, the quantity and the superb service we received. I am not sure what kind of service you receive with the royal service but we were treated with royal service at all times during our stay just being standard guests. We never had to hunt anyone down as there was always someone checking on us making sure we were happy. Although all the staff was pleasant and very accommodating, a few really stood out for going out of their way to ensure we had a pleasant experience. Oliver BOTHFELD Gerente de Relaciones PublicasPublic Relations Manager was so personable and made sure we had reservations for dinner and kept us informed of the events and seemed genuinely concerned about our experience. As I mentioned before the service well exceeded our exceptions and our favorites were Anallely and Wilberth at the Sunrise grill bar (the fajitas were great by the pool) as they treated us with royal service. Rafael Valasco and Jose at the Naos made lunch and breakfast very enjoyable. At the Hibachi restaurant, Mario the chef was very entertaining and the food was outstanding. The shows were entertaining and Ivan (water aerobics instructor) kept us abreast of the upcoming shows and was so persoanable every time he saw us..loved the fire show. By the end of the week, the hostesses at the restaurants remembered our last names (that’s impressive). We also took advantage of the Spa and had duo massages and fully enjoyed the experience and left feeling fresh and relaxed. The grounds were pretty and the bed loungers were so comfortable. The beach is small but very private with a mini bar and service at the beach. There are rocks but areas were swimming is rock free. Overall, I would recommend to a friend and plan on returning. I almost afraid to go anywhere else now that we were so spoiled on this trip! I am not sure anyone can compete…

I've been to my share of resorts (caribbean and bahamas mostly) but this one was without a doubt the best one. The service for me is the single most important aspect of a resort. The attention to detail the staff has is incredible. They made sure everything was just as we wanted it to be without having to call in every half hour and feel like i'm nagging the receptionist. The best part was when we asked for a bigger bed, they didn't just switch out the bed. They put us in a larger suite! Wish my trip was longer than 3 days, but next time i'll make sure to go for at least a week. Just go, you won't regret it.
