“The Staff made this holiday...100% honest review.”
Reviewed 22 August 2013

Okay, so this has taken me nearly a year to review. Me and my boyfriend went on our first holiday here,in September 2012. Playa Del carmen is a lovely rural area, perhaps a quieter version of Cancun.

When we first arrived at the Hotel we were greeted kindly and taken to our room, it was upstairs in an apartment block. When we entered the room it was very hot and stuffy, due to the fact that our air-con was not working. We were rather peeved but it wasnt too much of a worry, then we decided to take showers to cool down. I HATE creepy crawlies, so to find large ants in the shower and on the walls was horrible. Because of this we went to reception to ask to switch rooms, they were completely happy to let us do this and took us and our belongings to a new cooler, bug free room. This meant we could relax. The room also had a fridge stocked with fizzy pop, water and local beers.

Our new room was very clean and the bed was huge! On our first night we ate at the hotel's A La Carte restaurant. I was impressed by the menu and the attentive service offered by the waiters, still with a view of the main entertainment it was an enjoyable experience. For the other nights we ate in the buffet restaurant. It was ok, food was enjoyable some nights, others a bit bland but the highlight was the american cheese burgers. These were my favourite. Breakfast was brilliant and the lunch time selection was good too. (i must add that i can be a little fussy.)

We took a trip to the beach, which was easy to get to whether you walk or take the shuttle service provided by the hotel. Here we met our favourite staff members. THE ANIMACION TEAM!!
these were the most amazing people who always included you in activities and they were soo helpful. Honestly without these people our holiday would not have been as good!

My overall verdict of this hotel is if you are not a luxury snob, you'll do fine here, food is not bad, staff are amazing (special thanks to sonia the waitress and the animacion team.) and the area is brilliant. Free bicycle hire from the hotel too!

i would go back to this hotel, but only for the staff really, i do think id like to try someplace new.

Room Tip: definitely go for the upgrade if you can afford. ps, keep curtains shut to conceal privacy.

First of all the hotel isn't that bad. It's clean, the restaurants are good, and the pool is nice. However, we arrived on honeymoon expecting a real luxurious place. We got to our room to find it was tiny, with 2 single beds. The balcony was none existent, and instead was 2 seats in a corridor overlooking a main road.

After complaining we were able to transfer across to The Royal. This is the sister hotel across the road. This did frustratingly cost us an extra $80 per night, but it was worth every cent!!! It's a different world over there, 6 or 7 great restaurants, amazing pools, huge luxurious rooms all with balconies, and made the Real Playa look like a cheap motel!

If you go to Playa Del Carmen, stay at The Royal, not The Real!!!

I don't know where to begin! We were given an "upgrade" to a suite which I think meant that the room was larger. The refrigerator wasn't stocked, and when it was upon request, the drinks could not be gotten cold because the fridge didn't work. There was also some stray "hairs" left in fridge that were never removed the duration of our stay. The couch in the upgraded room was stained, ripped, and extremely dirty. The tiles in the floor and on the walls were also chipped and had a dirty appearance. Each day we had to request washcloths because they were not provided. There was no iron or ironing board, which are supposed to be standard with that room as well. The main problem was lack of a working air conditioner. It was extremely hot and uncomfortable. We never ate there the entire time, because we didn't trust the food, so the all- inclusive was not really a good deal. The pool was small and dirty. Not a fun vacation. Motel 6 is better, and a much better rate!

I stayed at this all-inclusive resort becaure I was traveling alone and got a great deal -- it wasn't worth it even the great rate that I got!

I left the resort daily to head to the beach because the pool area is so horrible! It is a very small pool, and most of the areas are shaded. So, I packed up and made the walk to the beach every day. The beach is not close to this resort -- and the beach club offered fills up quickly -- and is very crowded. It is also next to the pier where the boats to/from Cozamel...not the best views!

The food was marginal at the buffet and the restaurant (which basically served the exact same menu items that were on the buffet).

The rooms are not good! They were dirty, towels not nice, television small and only get a few channels (with not that great reception). The beds were very uncomfortable.

The entire resort looked like a very run down, old, resort that hadn't been updated in 20+ years.

The staff were nice, but excpected tips at every turn. For drinks, for meals, everything -- and when you didn't give a tip -- you got very bad service..

I was also continually asked about attending a Time Share presentation. After getting bothered several times a day, I decided to do it (really just for the gift certificate) --- DON'T DO IT!! It took me 3 hours to get my $50 gift certificate and wasted an entire morning! And after viewing the nicer hotels in this brand -- this hotel even seemed worse!

I spent my entire trip outside of this resort. Spent days at the beach -- and evening walking around Playa Del Carmen -- because I didn't want to spend time at this resort.

Room Tip: The best tip for a good room -- stay elsewhere!

We stayed here July 15 - July 18, 2013. Much of the staff here was really awesome (Cristabel, Flore...) and we met some amazing people, but the resort was not up to par. The beds are rock hard, the beach is 6 blocks away and the food was just average. Having stayed at the Gran Caribe Real in Cancun, we expected much much more than what was offered. The location was really nice, though.

This place never will meet your expectations. Don't waste your money in that cave! The rooms are very bad. The service too. The snack bar is a joke, even the water bottles inside the refrigerator in the rooms had the caps broken and it seemed like they filled them up. They never put the number of towels needed. The food was not good. No variety. I think there is lack of good management there. What a pit because the location of this hotel is good. I do not recommend this place. You will feel frustrated in you vacation. Believe it!!!

First and last time in that hotel. Would not recommend this hotel to any one. When purchased the all-inclusive package we were told that it included the use of restaurants, pool and other amenities at the Grand Porto Hotel and it never happened once we checked in. Rip off. If you try to get the all-inclusive package over the phone and the person on the other side offers you the use of those amenities (Armando his name) make sure he sends you a contract including those things told over the phone. The food was horrible. The bed...when first jumped into it I thought they had forgotten the mattress. Poor bathroom. The staff doesn't follow up with your needs. The snack bar was a joke: Wanted to play pool and there was nobody to show us where to turn the light on; wanted to play table tennis and no ball to do it...Overall it was a very bad choice.

Room Tip: The best room to get is not going to that hotel
