Basic Double-Room w/bathroom, $190 per person/per night , 20th – 22nd March 2014

Vibe: Unmistakably hippy, replete with a dread-locking service and the soothing chorus of duelling Spanish guitars.

Location: 4 blocks from the beach, Tres Mundos is thankfully far enough from the Haagen-Daaz and Starbucks experience of Calle 5 and 10, whilst being convenient to reach the beaches by foot.

Best thing: The splashes of colour that adorn the walls and floors are clearly reflective of an owner that has a passion for the unique and creative. That and the rooftop hammocks.

Worst thing: Breakfast is included, however prepare to be disappointed. A poorly operating toaster will dribble out your ration of two pieces of sweet bread to go with a not dreadful cup of coffee. To chuck in a couple of pieces of fresh fruit would cost the owners very little, but may actually leave their guests a little less ravenous by 9am.

Value for money: If the breakfasts were better, then it's fine. Our double room, whilst being very spacious, consisted of 3 bunk beds. A couple hoping for a more romantic experience will be disappointed and possibly left with bumps to the head.

Recommended for: Young, carefree travellers who want to enjoy the nightlife of Playa del Carmen.

Top tip: Buy additional food to go with your breakfast bread; the kitchen is actually not bad.

The Tres Mundos Hostel is a great, more layed back (depending on the season, of course!) hostel in Playa del Carmen. The owners and staff are very humane and friendly. Also, the choice of music fits the time of the day they play it in and it is a perfect location, you can get pretty much everywhere quickly, and if not you can use one of the bikes available if you don't want to pay for a cab or colectivo.

The staff were.lovely...they joined in with the guests which gave it a family vibe.
The kitchen fscilities aren't great but beggers can't be choosers...they are useable!
Bedrooms are.nice, great outdoor chilling area and location is great!

This place is disgusting to say the least and if we hadn't had belongings I would have rather slept on the beach. We had a private room (bed and small side table) which was damp even after we had the windows open. The blinds were made of cane and had bugs on them which we had to kill with deet spray. We didn't even bother to take the bedcovers back and slept in our sleeping bag liners with airline blankets and pillows. The bathrooms and kitchens need shelled and abluted. Hair all around the sink where people cut their hair/shave and leave it, wee on toilet seats, sand in the showers. Staff say that they clean the bathrooms but clearly not enough or they need to get more staff. My partner had one shower in 4 days! Didn't use the kitchen as it looked like a grease pit with utensils that were fit for the bin, opened the fridge to store some juice and it was bulging at the seams and stinking. Communal areas are exposed to the elements and get absolutely soaked if the weather is bad (not useful given the downpours we had). Breakfast is some bread and coffee (have to use a toaster that's semi-functional and their old plates) so avoided that. We did complain to the manager that says this was all because of busy season. I'm sorry but places should cater for all times of the year and weathers and employ more staff at busy times. Had it not been busy season and we could have left to go somewhere else we would have. To put things into perspective we are used to going to third world countries like Gambia so in no way are we snobs but would have rather slept outside than here. We basically got up at 6 every day and got out and only returned later at night as didn't want to be anywhere near the place. My partner didn't even want to eat full stop as this place made us feel so awful. Basically spoiled our two weeks in Mexico. If you know what's good for you then please don't stay here!!!!

Louise, the only thing that spoiled your 2 weeks was your incorrect decision of accommodation. We have a quite understandable description on our booking websites and I have no idea what made you book a hostel private with shared bathroom during party season in Playa del Carmen when you are traveling with an overly sensitive ill partner. You needed a quiet hotel environment with your own facilities and no people around. Your extremely exaggerated description of your experience is, when you cut out all the drama, basically what a hostel life is all about. Shared kitchen, bathrooms, people..,we all love the lifestyle, but it's not for everybody. I disagree with your dramatization of our kitchen and the bathroom, I admit we were full so special effort was needed but we did it well, our kitchen utensils are used by a lot of people including us the owners and staff, some of our 'old' plates are less than a month old and the fridge is regularly cleaned. The bathroom was shared and I apologized for your more messy housemates, but we cleaned it regularly and well. Our bedsheets are washed before every use and the curtains I checked after the review arrived and there is no sign of the supposed bugs and not because you killed it with your DEET attack (DEET is a mosquito repellent, not a bug killer). To put my position into perspective, I travel a lot and have stayed in a many hostels all over Europe and world and this is a good hostel. There are thousands of worse ones and obviously there are better ones, but to say to people to avoid us just because you are not a hostel type is narrow minded. We have loads of friends/guests that stayed here and return regularly because they love our home. Maybe by sleeping on the beach instead you would realize we aren't all that bad.

Dirtiest bathroom I have seen in a long time. Dead cockroaches in the rooms and hallways. Grimy windows and kitchen. Could be really a great place with more love and attention as it has some charm and life.

thanks for your comment. honestly i dont know which property you reviewed but this doesnt look at all like our hostel. i live here too and its rare that i see a cockroach even though mexico is full of them. grimy windows? our property is full of light and has more light than any other hostel in playa. dirtiest bathroom? we clean every day 3 times in busy periods, its possible that sometimes when we have guests that dont care bathroom gets dirty between cleaning but believe me, its as much of a problem for me as it is for you. we do love and care for our hostel and it can be even better place with a little bit more support.

We stayed one night in this hostel and would not return. Upon entering it was dirty everywhere. From the floor in the entrance, the common area and our room. Our bedding was very old and not at all comfortable. The prices are extremely inflated for the Christmas/New Year area and after spending the previous night in a hotel that was cheaper than our private room, it was pretty disappointing. For less money at the hotel, we received towels, soap, hot water, privacy, no noise, rooftop pool, full buffet breakfast and more. I think too many hostels are charging too much private rooms and often cost more than budget hotels, yet they do not offer anywhere near as good quality as a budget hotel. They could not even arrange a taxi for us. I would not recommend this hostel, nor would I stay here again.

thank you for your opinion. you came in the height of a party season (20.dec-10.jan) when hostels are full of party kids that dont focus on maintaining clenliness and keeping quiet. people choose hostels to party and socialize and it gets noisy and dirty at times whatever we do. we cleaned 3 times a day in a desperate effort to keep things in order but it just is always the case in those dates. we are glad that people come to have fun and sorry that not everybody is happy about it. we charge our prices because a lot of things get broken by careless use and other reasons, most people pay the price to have a good time and make friends. the choice is yours if to pay it or not. hostel is not a hotel and cannot be judged/valued the same way. so called 'quality' some call 'luck of soul' or 'boring', we prefer to be more 'original' than 'perfect'. sorry we couldn't arrange a taxi, we always stop it on the street, thats how this works here.
