“Would like to spend a week next time!”
Reviewed 28 May 2014

We were looking for an adults only quick get away over Memorial Day weekend that was low key and relaxing with excellent and efficient service, large private room, and ideally at a smaller resort. Given our shorter stay, we wanted to make sure the on-premises amenities were very inviting.

Goal achieved and paradise found 7 hours from our front door in Chicago where Bali Ha'i meets the Maya. The driver was waiting for us at airport arrivals and had us at the resort in about half an hour. We then spent the next few days relaxing in our large beach palapa, using the spa, dining, and generally loafing about with smiles on our faces.

Food was excellent. Our rule was if we did not know what it was and the preparation was regional: order it....and ceviche...and more ceviche. The octopus and 'catch of the day' dishes were top notch....especially those done in regional preparation. Half the reason I go to the ocean it to be closer to the food. Cocktails were fun and inviting.

Services was very friendly and abundant with multiple people asking what you needed at all times. The beach service crew works very hard and really made our days of rest that much better. Love the real silverware and dishware on the beach. After only a day, staff and guest get to know one another which is nice and a benefit of a smaller resort.

We went with a signature room and it was awesome. Huge outdoor space which is what we wanted. Good privacy. Housekeeping was a full 2 x per day. Once during breakfast and once while you are at dinner. Area were spotless. My wet bare feet over the floor produced no residue so clearly very very clean.

Room price is a value as compared to other resorts in the Caribbean considering you get your own little home, patio, and pool and can walk to the beachfront without a tram.

A nice, later than most, noon checkout was appreciated and driver was waiting to whisk us back to the airport right on time. There is no front desk so arrival and departure are individualized or very small group. They make the process fast and efficient.

Someday, when time allows sans children, we will be back and would like to know what the drink of the day is every day for a week. I've been going down to the area since the early 1980's and would love to, once again, partake in all the area has to offer...but for this trip, we got our taste of the good life at a very unique resort. Keep up the good work!

Room Tip: Really depends upon what your goals are in relation to price point. There is a wide variety of room...

We booked this property for our honeymoon and it didn't disappoint! Super friendly and accommodating staff, especially Omar! Villas are charming, elegant and spacious. The private plunge pool, hammock and outdoor shower were our fave spots at the villa! The spa was life changing, it was so perfectly therapeutic. We enjoyed our massages in room, in the couples hut and on the pier at sunset. After our first night, we extended our trip!

Just two days home from a fantastic stay at the Viceroy Riviera. We have previously stayed at five or six other resorts south of Cancun. On this trip, we only had enough time to vacation for three nights/four days and were looking for a quick decompress and transition to relaxation. From the moment we stepped out of our private transfer (booked through dream days) we were greeted and made to feel at home. From the signature scent of the resort wafting through the jungle, to the personal tour of the property you immediately feel yourself relaxing.
Our room (28) was right in the middle of the property and felt to be in a perfect location. We never heard any of the other guests while in our room ... just the waterfall of our plunge pool and various tropical birds and wildlife.
Really can't compliment the staff enough, at every turn there seemed to be a staff member either making a point to not be intrusive as we walked by or providing quick, tailored service at the restaurants, bar and palapas on the beach.
We chose to utilize the all inclusive package and felt it was an excellent value. Will definitely return to this resort!

We just got back from a weeks stay in suite 25, a luxury suite (low end) for our Anniversary. For background, we have recently stayed at the Nizuc ,Maroma and The Beloved and it is about our 8th trip to the region. They offered an all inclusive option, which we took and I was pleased to find that it truly was all inclusive with no surprises at the end in the bill. This was nice, as we did not stay all inclusive at either the Maroma (home of the $40 cheeseburger) or Nizuc and I must say it is more relaxing for me (the bill payer) to know what the cost of the trip will be up front. If you go a la carte, expect to spend $300-500 a day between meals and drinks. Drinks are quite pricey at $10-12 for a blended mixed drink and water is $5 a bottle so expect costs to add up quickly. We are not heavy drinkers and the costs for two with 16% tax and 15% tips were $75-100 for breakfast, $100-150 for lunch and $200-250 for dinner with moderate alcohol consumption included. These prices are similar to Nizuc and a bargain compared to Maroma. I feel that a budget of $400-500/day a la carte should be anticipated. The all inclusive package was definitely worth it just to avoid thinking about costs while on vacation and they absolutley didn't nickel and dime us AT ALL at check out, which I really appreciated. Nice to leave with as big a smile on my face as when I arrived.

From an quality perspective, I will say that usually I mentally allow for a drop in quality for both food and service and that this proved not be be required at the Viceroy. Food was very good and service was excellent. Regarding food, breakfast and dinner were excellent with lunch perhaps just a step below at very good. We ate on site the whole week and a few special meal (beach bbq and steak/seafood menu once a week) nights reduced the potential for repetition at dinner. One suggesting would be to take better advantage of the pizza oven as the pizza options were pretty basic and the pizza wasn't very good. Edible, but not exciting. All the mexican dishes we tried were very good.

Even our basic room was quite large (1000 sq ft) with a nice plunge pool and patio. Privacy was great, but I felt a bit like mosquito bait (they love me) both outside and unfortunately inside the room (I wonder if the maid had the doors open during cleaning...I would kill three or four a night but still woke up with bites). Four starts instead of five for cleanliness for the fact that it didn't look like the maid cleaned the outdoor pool/patio area at all some days (no problems inside), although leaves drop all the time and are no doubt a battle for grounds keepers. Grounds are far from manicured in the jungle like setting so if you are not into the "eco resort" look than perhaps this is not a resort for you or you should stay close to the beach at least.

Location? About a half hour south of the airport. The drive off the highway is a bit sketchy, but there really isn't anyplace you can walk to from the resort anyway. If you like the "eco resort" look you will appreciate the grounds. One niggle is that a few more ground level decorative plantings couldn't hurt. There are a lot of nice trees and shrubs lining the patchs but leaf litter and debris as well. The grounds keeping staff seem like they could be a little overwhelmed. Why four stars not five? Well, the beautiful beach is quite rocky once you hit the water line. They provide water shoes, which are really not optional. The water was quite enjoyable but you had to watch your step at times. There was also quite a bit of surf (1-3 foot waves), which may dissuade some. The other option was the pool, which was 3 ft deep with no depth change and no swim up bar. Definitely not a place for people who love big ornate pools.

For the price, the room was large and private and a bungalow. At the Nizuc you pay the same for a hotel style room with a balcony with a small plunge pool. The private plunge pool is deeper than the main pool at ~4 feet and is decent sized. No reasonable equivalent exists at Maroma, which really doesn't have a great pool either.

I have to plug the staff, which is saying something for most resorts in the area. They were on par with any in the world. Friendly, helpful, knowledgable. Nobody will blow you off. Nobody. Pepe and Francisco will get you a drink on the beach or by the pool every time you need one. Manny, the food and beverage manager and Salvatore worked with me to set up a special beach dinner which was nearly entirely included in our all inclusive package. We agreed on a small fee, which was actually not even on my bill as the wind sadly drove us off the beach. The set up was beautifully done though and my Wife was quite appreciative.

Executive summary? Beautiful place to relax with very good food and excellent service. Very good value for what you get in comparison to other 4+ star resorts nearby (Nizuc, Maroma, The Beloved). Swimming off the beach wasn't the greatest, but the beach was beautiful to relax on. The pool was pleasant (heated) but basic. The room was the big plus. Almost all are private bungalows with heated (really heated...they even offered to turn it up) plunge pools. I absolutely loved it and would go back in a heatbeat...but bring my bug spray next time.

Room Tip: Rooms very close to the spa may be a problem if you are adverse to incense. They have a welcoming M...

This was my first holiday this year and was really looking forward to it. Any my expectations were met. The staff are extremely helpful and and take care of your requests promptly. The breakfast is elaborate and we had dinner at the restaurant one night which was excellent. I had one massage treatment which was also top class. Room was large and comfortable. Nothing to complain about and hope to be back some day.

Can't say enough great things about our trip and experience. The best part was the service, every waiter, butler, etc got to know us and our special requests. they really take care of you individually. We got upgraded to a Premium Villa and had our own Butler, Omar who made the experience very special. The food was great, the beach was great. We were a little worried about only having two restaurants for the all inclusive part but it was actually great. we never ate the same thing except for a daily serving of the ceviche! The menus were great along with the service. it was nice to just relax and not have to worry about making reservations. we just showed up and were seated.
This is the resort for a couple looking to relax. there is no entertainment or music, which we liked because it was so quiet and relaxing. The other guests really kinda stick to themselves so we were not bothered by anything.
The room, shower, bathroom, private pool were all great. Each villa is by itself so you have privacy and don't hear anyone.
Thanks to all the servers, we got to know all them by name and they really cared to make us happy!

Cant say enough about it, best vacation ever and best place we have ever stayed.
