“We would recommend to friends and absolutely go back.”
Reviewed 6 August 2011

My husband and I decided at the last minute to change our local beach trip to a resort in Mexico. After checking out prices and many trip advisor reviews, we decided on Ocean Maya Royale and believe it or not, the price of the stay was comparable to our local beach trip. We stayed at the Ocean Maya Royale for 5 nights from July 30th -August 4, 2011. The resort was great and met our expectations, especially for the price. All the pictures on the resort web site were true to form, very beautiful. Upon arrival, we got upgraded to a Privilege room as all the deluxe rooms were filled. We were asked if we wanted to purchase the privilege package(which includes room service, beds on the beach, air conditioned dining in the buffett etc) but once we said no, we were never asked again. Our room had a view of the villas which although not a sea view, was nice. The bed itself had a foam mattress topper and was not comfortable to me but it was tolerable for 5 nights. The fitted sheets were like sand paper. We found it better to sleep on the top sheet as it was not as worn. The room had a mildew odor which I understand can be common at many beach resorts. We requested an air freshner in the room but never received it. As soon as a left the front desk for the request, I knew it wasn't going to be taken care of as the staff was friendly but didn't seem to take my request for an air freshner seriously. I just bought some inscents when we went on the shopping trip into Playa del Carmen (which was very hard to find) and that seems to help a lot. So you may want to pack your favorite air freshner plug ins or scented candles from home in case your room has that issue. There was great AC in our room and the shower always had consistent hot water. The mini bar stocked with water, beer, sodas and liquior was nice. We had to ask a few times for it to be refilled but it was always done promptly.

Unlike some resorts we'd been to, where there was constant harrassment to buy things and purchase excursions, we did not experience that at Ocean Maya. You may be asked to purchase your excursions through your travel agency or airport transfer company. If not, there is a tour agent that is always in the lobby 7am to 5pm that can book you on a tour of your liking. We purchased the Tulum tour for $43 per person that included our transportation, entrance fee and guide. I read on trip advisor that others just took a taxi to Tulum and paid for the entrance fee and a tour guide when they arrived. I can't imagine the taxi being cheaper as it was a long trip. The Tulum beach area was great. After being taking the tour in the scorching heat, it was nice to get into the clear blue water- so wear your bathing suit. There is nowhere to change once you enter the ruins. We also took a wonderful fishing trip at Maroma Paradise and were very pleased.

The food was good at La Hacienda, the buffett restaurant, with different varieties for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The a la cart speciality restaurants were very nice-Mostly the atmosphere than the food. But as far as the food, I enjoyed the Mexican and Japanese restaurants the best.

There were plenty of iguanas and racoon type creatures roaming about but none of them bother you. Take some bug spray as you will need it especially at night if you hang out anywhere on the resort (your room, the lobby area, the entertainment theatre) but that is to be expected- just be prepared!

The staff throughout the resort were friendly. Do remember to bring cash as it is just necessary, although the resort states that tips are included, to tip those that provide good service. There were a few that on our last day/night we sought out to give a tip to because they were consistently friendly to us. The tips although just a few dollars seems to be very appreciated. You will need your cash on the excursions for tipping the bus drivers and excursion guides. The resort offers free transportation into Playa del Carmen for shopping that you must book a reservation on a day in advance. The shopping trip had a tour guide to give you history on the area and lead you to a store to hear about Tequila making and give you samples, if you wish.

There were nightly shows and events. The Coco Bongo staff work hard to get you involved in activities at the pool and in the evening at the shows. It's kinda funny to see the pool volley ball leader dancing in the show at night but it was entertaining. Two pools were always warm and very nice. One quiet and one lively most of the day. The beach was nice to look at but not clear blue. In fact, it was very not blue at all, more brown. I never got in. The gym was small but nice. It had everything in it that you would need for a workout. I regret not utilizing the spa services as it seemed to be a lot of services offered for great prices like the couples massage for $160 US dollars.

Sure there were things that could have been better (better mattress and sheets, no mildew smell) but overall, Ocean Maya is a beautiful resort with great atmosphere, good food, friendly staff and reasonably priced- It has a lot of potential to be a five star.

With it's 5 star rating and new refurbishment, my partner and I expected a high quality hotel which we had obtained a two week holiday at for an excellent price. I many areas this was the case as in the first week we were very happy with the hotel. It wasn't until the second week that cracks started to appear and we noticed that the hotel was lacking in areas although it has the potential to be a quality hotel.

Location:
We felt the hotel was located in a great place. It is a 15-20min taxi journey (which only costs 200 pesos/£14) to Playa del Carmen centre. It is also only 35-45mins away from Cancun which has many attractions and the airport (the first stop of the airport transfer).

Front desk service:
We thought the guys at the front desk were excellent throughout our holiday. They have a doorman system where when you leave the hotel (unless you have checked out) they take down your room number to ensure you return. The reception team are there 24hrs a day and the few times we had to deal with them, they made sure we were seen to asap.

Main hotel area:
This part of the hotel we never really understood. We called it an open planned lobby (don't know the correct term), but basically the hotel doesn't have a front door and only has large sliding doors on the beach side for when there is wind and rain. Now in Mexico it is usually around 100% humidity and 30oC, coupled with this open plan, there is no value in using air conditioning. At night, when you just want to chill with a beer/cocktail, it is impossible as it gets so hot and unbarable as there is no respite from the humidity. We felt that if they could find a way to cool that area down, then the place would be perfect as if has many comfortable seats and a great bar service with guys willing to do most drinks you like as well as running a nightly snack service between 23:30 and 6:00. There is also a shop and free wifi which comes in handy from time to time.

Food:
Attached to the main lobby is the main buffet restaurant (which is also temporarily home to the Italian a la carte). Here, we were greeted every morning and night by a host/hostess who were always helpful and friendly, we would be seated and then greeted by a waitor/waitress who would get you anything at all. We met a couple and one of them was gluten intolerant and a veggie. Everytime they came in a waitor would show them what they couldn't have so they didn't eat anything they shouldn't (they were also provided a printed piece of paper explaining this in Spanish so there wouldn't be any confusion).
We felt that the food was great to start with but we found that by the second week, we had already eaten everything at least once before and therefore got very tired of hotel food by the time we left. They have some great ideas, but again, we felt that the hotel isn't meeting it's potential in this area. We found that we ate some of the best food we have had, but also the worst which shouldn't happen in a 5 star hotel. Highlights included, fantastic beef from a barbeque, great selection of fruit and salad and also terrible, processed cheese (I like my cheese) and 'cuts of meat' that was definately from a Tesco Value pack. (6-7/10)
There are 3 'a la carte' restaurants (Italian, Japanese and Mexican) we only managed to try the Italian and Japanese. We were not impressed with the Italian what so ever. When I eat Italian, I expect, tomatoe, cheese, garlic etc. Like I said before, processed cheese, not much of a tomatoe taste in the bolognese sauce and no taste of garlic in any of my dishes. We tried this once, never again. However, it was always really busy, so maybe it is the liking of others. (4/10)
The Japanese al a carte however is fantastic. It runs on a Mon, Wed, Fri and Sat. We went there twice and we would have done it every night if we could. Sushi, rice, meat, soup, all tasted fantastic and the 'ambience' was lovely. I would recommend this to anyone going to the hotel. One tip: get there before 19:00 otherwise you won't get in, it is that busy. (9/10)
Lastly, there is a lunchtime restaurant that is open from 11:00 - 17:00 which is good for a late breakfast and for lunch. Much like the main restaurant but has chips, pizza, nachos etc. We liked this restaurant as it served something different everyday and when we got peckish we could go there easily as it is right by the 'quiet' pool. (8-9/10)

Room:
When we arrived we were very happy with the room, it was cool due to a good air con. We had two double beds in our room which wasn't entirely to our liking but there are ways to make them into one big bed which we ended up doing. The shower and toilet are in a separate room, shower was lovely although the hot water was tempermental at times. One scary thought was the toilet. Because they haven't updated their drainage system yet, they ask for you to put as little toilet paper down the toilet, instead providing you with a bin?!? I hardly fulfilled this request. There is then a door which doesn't have a lock, more a divider on a hinge to my partners 'prep area' where there was a big mirror and a sink. This was never a problem for us.
We had a perfectly sized wardrobe (take some of your own hangers), which has a safety deposit box in it which is locked with a key. It also houses an iron and board. There was a TV which had cable channels which were mainly in Spanish but had some English speaking programmes on. A fridge was in the room which was stocked up daily with soft drinks, beer and water (which is free to use for all British guests only). An alarm clock, telephone and dressing gown with slippers were also provided. We went on our anniversary which my partner had informed them of and they provided use with chocolates and sparkling white wine (which they classed as champagne). We only experienced two problems, the sheets, like others have mentioned can be like sleeping on sand paper. My partner is quite fussy with what she sleeps on and she had to discard them everynight and sleep on another (you get 3 per bed). It was only because of this that we came across our 2nd problem. One night she noticed blood stains on the sheet which was new and supposedly cleaned. We were gutted by this so we informed our rep this following morning (who was fantastic by the way) and they were changed instantly. All in all, very comfortable and to our liking. (8/10)

Pool/Beach area:
There is a towel service which you get a towel card each and you can swap or collect between 08:00 - 18:00.
There are two pools in the hotel, one is the 'quiet' one, the other not so. The not so one is where the pool bar is (which you can swim to and sit at) and where all the music is played. This was great for the first couple of days when you're adapting to the heat and wanted to bathe in the water with a beer. However, you do have to put up with the party go-ers, they 'own' the area and we found were very loud, so wouldn't recommend that area if you're trying to relax. The second pool is a lot quieter and where you find most couples chilling in and the one we usually used. Both were pretty clean although they collected sand from the pillocks who walked straight into it from the beach.
Beach area is ok, the sunbeds need replacing as most of them don't have support, so if you have back problems, I would recommend an early start each day to select a good bed. Sand was pretty much as clean as it could be but many ants are around that bite so I would watch out for them and maybe wear repellant.
I wouldn't recommend going into the sea, this area of Mexico has been hit hard by the BP oil spill and visible oil is still washing up on the shores all the way down the Riviera Maya. If you want a beach holiday with a nice sea, go to Cancun, doesn't seem to be that affected. (7/10)

Entertainment:
There is a hotel entertainment team who are brilliant. The guys who mix in with everyone are all great and will do anything to make sure you enjoy your hols. During the day they provide beach and water volleyball, water polo, football and drinking games (e.g. beer drinking contest, which weren't too 'spring break-ish'). They also take guests to Coco-Bongos as they have their own VIP area but we didn't do this.
At night, the entertainment lacks substantially. There is saxophone player that you will hear the first night you get there and every night after. If he isn't performing that night then he is in the restaurant providing background music and it does grate on you after a while. After him there are also acts from professional acts and the entertainment team. All shows are good but it seemed they didn't have any real structure as two shows were performed twice when we were there. They have a big theatre with a stage and we felt that this was another huge disappointment as it wasn't reaching its potential. (6/10)

Misc:
The most bizarre thing about the hotel is the Priviledge service. This is an upgrade split into two sections, a room and service upgrade or a service upgrade. We did neither but for what we could see, for $50 per person per night you can get a suite and the service, for $25 per person per night you can get the service which just didn't seem worth it. You get padded beds on the beach, branded drinks and pre-bookable options for the a la carte restaurants. The annoying thing about the presence of this service is that the hotel feels they have to find things to make it worth the money, which also includes air conditioned rooms in the restaurant. Why the hotel would want to include this for just Priviledge customers is beyond me. Don't understand the service and why it is in place, for £250 each for two weeks, it just ain't worth it, I hope they get rid of it soon.

Overall, this hotel is good to very good. With help from the travel companies and customer feedback, this hotel could be one of the best in Playa del Carmen, the bits I have mentioned could be easily rectified, hence the reason for our disappointment. I wouldn't go out and about and recommend it (yet!) but I certainly wouldn't want to put people off the hotel because it helped us have an excellent two weeks in Mexico. (8/10)

Tips:
Take insect repellant and apply liberally every evening and when going on coach journeys.
Take an extra beach towel
Take a small bottle of high factor sun cream as it is difficult not to burn
Gents, don't take trousers!! Not needed for restaurant as shorts are allowed and it is far too hot and humid to wear them, even at night, trust me!
Ladies, my partner suggests, do not take long dresses unless 'flowey' as again it is too hot and humid to withstand wearing them.

Hope this was helpful.

Dear guest,

Thank you for posting such a complete review with so many diferent specific points, good things but also points that need improving. Regarding the Privilege service, our intetion is to give a litle extra for the guest that like to be really spoilt, but I would like to say that for us all our guest are very important, so we do provide the same quality service to everybody so they enjoy the most their holidays.

We hope that you come back and give us a second chance.

We went as a group of 4 couples for our 30th birthdays. Upon getting to the hotel, impressed with the beauty of the grounds and all the plant life and colors on the building. The facility is just breathtakingly gorgeous. Disappointed with the front desk staff though as they did not place us near eachother as they promised when we first arrived.
Rooms were great but there was only air conditioning in one of the restaurants, made it so you weren't even very hungry bc you were so hot. Hibachi grill at the Japanese restaurant is a must! Delicious, we went there twice bc yummy and air conditioned. :)
Hosts and hostesses were rather irritated that we had a group of 8 and that we all wanted to sit by one another, seemed like a reasonable request to me.
Food was ok, nothing to write home about, poolside grill blah unless you like fajita meat and cheeseburgers everyday.
Upgrade wasnt even offered to us but would only really be worth it for the air conditioned room you could eat in at the buffet. Liquors were good, a few more options with the upgrade. Seating at the beach not worth the upgrade either in my opinion.
Pool bartenders were fantastic. Always very nice and smiling!!!
Free tram to downtown Playa del Carmen also a nice touch.

Room Tip: Ocean view is the way to go, right by beach and pool

Just returned from two weeks at the Ocean Maya Royale organised as a package through Thomson.
Hotel entrance and public areas are lovely - spotlessly clean and well cared for. The gardens are beautiful and it is delightful to see the wildlife roaming freely (Iguanas, racoons, capibaras etc). The two pools are lovely, warm and safe. if you want games, activities and music then there is a pool for you. If you want to lay in the water reading a book or drinking a cocktail then there is one for you too.

Bedrooms are modern and comfortable and well looked after by the chambermaids. Our bed was really confortable (another review bug bare) although it did have a mattress topper. Our television remote control refused to work mid week and it was quickly sorted out. Our mini bar was regularly stocked with beer, soft drinks and water and the towels and linen were changed everyday.

Food was varied and well presnted. The a la carte restaurants were very pleasant with the Japanese our favourite. The buffet restaurant catered for pretty much every taste, and there were daily chef specials which you could order and were served at your table. Virtually ever other day there was a theme night with the patio area decorated accordingly. The staff worked so hard to serve good food and entertain. The bar staff in the lobby and outside patio area constantly patrolling to ensure that everyone had drinks when they wanted. Every couple of days traders came in to sell local handicrafts etc in the evening so you really didn't need to go out if you didn't want to. The traders negotiated on price and so you could get a good deal.

The reception/concierge staff were very helpful and flexible. We read alot of the tripadvisor reviews before we booked and were especially interested in the up grade to the PRIVILEDGE all inclusive and whether it was worth it. We were concerned about the whole sunbed issue and liked the idea of the roped off sunbed area with balinese beds for two which wouldn't require us getting up at the crack of dawn to put our towels on beds to reserve them. Previous reviews said that they paid 50US per night for the upgrade and views were mixed on the value. With our package we upgraded our room to a honeymoon room which was larger, with white leather sofas and coffee table. The terrace was very private with a jaccuzzi built for two. This upgrade also included the PRIVILEDGE all inclusive. This gave us great sunbeds anytime of the day and a wonderful attendant Azucena who brought us anything we wanted. We also had an air conditioned area to eat in the buffet restaurant and the Italian restaurant which was very welcome and made dinning more comfortable. We were also able to book tables in any of the a la carte restaurants so we could eat when we wanted to. As a Priviledge band holder we got premium spirits in our cocktails and drinks - this pleased my husband as he loves Bombay Sapphire Gin and tonic and good Cognac was able to have these as part of the AI deal. There were other little benefits - robes and slippers in the room, MP3 dock in the room, premium Vodka, Tequila and Scotch in the mini bar and regularly replenished, better quality toiletries in the room, complimentary room service inc, breakfast in bed, VIP conciege services. All in all the room upgrade which included the Priviledge AI upgrade was very worthwhile and made a good holiday great.

As other reviewers have said, the beach isn't great and , depending on the weather can be plagued by seaweed. We went in the sea once - the weather changed and the seaweed disappeared for a day or so. The water was warm and pleasant but not very clear. Like others, if tourquoise blue sea is what you are after then you need to go somewhere else. For us this was not a big deal.

The evening entertainment was enjoyable on the whole. Again the staff work really hard,. the best evenings were when the live band came to play - good music and dancing, didn't get to bed until after 2am. There is a different show every night - Mayan, Mexcan, Carribean, Grease, Oscar Movies etc so you are bound to find something to enjoy.

All in all this is a good hotel and considering what you pay I think it is a little gem. Yes of course you can get better with a la carte gourmet food etc but you would pay considerably more (almost twiceas much). We would certainly go again and will be recommending the Ocean Maya Royale to our friends. If you like Spa treatments, the team here are brilliant andtreatments are very good value. I felt so relaxed and rejuvenatedly after my body treatment, facial and massage - highly recommended.

I can only assume those who were not happy do not have realistic expectations and expect 6 star treatment whatever they pay. Our thanks to everyone (chambermaids, cleaners, gardners, waiters, bar staff, concierge and reception staff, animation team, spa technicians) for being so attentive and making our holiday so restful and such a pleasure.

Room Tip: If you want to feel that bit extra special and can afford the room upgrade which brings with it the...

Arrived from Gatwick on 16th July. Took about 40 mins on the coach. We was the 1st to be dropped off. Check in was quick. Cool drink given to us on arrival. Had to take own case & find our room. Fine with us tho. We found a bottle of cava & a plate of small cakes in our room. It was our 1st Anniversary. Fridge was filled daily with water and a few cans. Room very spacious. Needed a long mirror in the room. I found the bed comfy. Air con very cold.
Food I had no complaints. If u skipped brekie u had the snack bar by the pool or the main dining room. Drinks were strong. No complaints there.
Evening entertainment was ok. There not pros but do a good job & put a lot of effort into it. Many a eve I went to bed about 2 ish because we met lovely people who enjoyed a good chat.
We got the local bus into town was 30 pestos. Had to cross the busy highway outside of hotel. Ask at the front of hotel. They will guide u to
nearest bus stop & explain how much a taxi is to Cancun etc.
I wasnt privilege. I don't think u need to upgrade. I would go back. Enjoy your holiday & hope you enjoy it as much as we did.

Ok so first I'd like to say I'm not a picky traveler, I've stayed in hostels, cheap hotels, expensive hotels...everything! My boyfriend and I book a 5 night trip and upgraded to the privilege package. DONT DO IT! I have so much to say that I will just list it.
1. When we first arrived we were taken to the privilege check in and were brought a class of some really good juice concoction. Then we began the check in process and of course I began asking questions about the extra perks we were supposed to have. When I did this Claudia-the VIP check in chick acted like she had no idea what I was talking about. She gave me a 30% off coupon to the spa which I had to book within the first 24 hours. I asked her about the resort credit and she sAid that was it. She continued to look very confused when I asked her about the special dinner we were supposed to have. She basically gave me no information and actually acted a little perturbed that I asked her questions. Bad experience.
2. We were then wisked awAy to the VIP concierge who was named Nina or Dina. She seemed nice At first but I was already pretty annoyed by the false advertisement and check in process. She began asking us questions but her ultimate goal was to get us to a time share breakfast. We let her know we were interested and she said WHY? umm because we arent, she kept going and kept going and then rudely said "it's fine I can't offer u the 120 dollars anyway since u aren't married" Wow Terrible customer service!
3. The rooms are kinda as advertised, there aren't uprgrAded liqours or beers In the fridge. In fact the only kind of beer they have on the property is budweiser and some beer in a blue can. No corona no dos equis no modelo. The bathroom ammenities were also not upgraded and were terrible. Ohhh and the room service... We ordered in one night and I almost threw up! The pizza was worse than a frozen pizza and the French fries tasted like they were cooked twice! Disgusting.
4. The food, if u have any kind of taste buds you will not find this food edible! My boyfriend is an ex marine who will eat anything, and he couldnt even stomach the food. Unless your trying to lose weight this is not a hotel that values food, it puts more into the presentAtion than actual taste. Oh and al a carte here means they bring u what they want. Every single restaurant is disgusting and I found myself spitting out my food multiple times.
5. The drinks are mediocre the bartenders were friendly but they are using the cheapest liquor possible even if u bought the privilege package.
6. The pool was awesome and this is what we enjoyed the most. The beach was not crowded but it's also not clear. It's not like tulum or cancun, more like a CleAner version of the gulf.
7. There is no entertainment at the hotel we went back to our rooms early each night. The entertainment staff tries but it's really kinda boring. We Did catch one cool show with Mayan dancers.
8. Go to tulum or isla de mujeres!! We loved those places the water is beautiful and the people are lovely.
9. All in all this hotel is at best a 3 stAr the food is truly terrible and the people In the lobby are not friendly. As u get closer to the pool the stAff gets friendlier.
10. I will not stay here again nor recommend this hotel. The majority of there advertisement is false, I wish I would have listened to the reviews. We heard from another couple that excellence was good and from another that tresrios was terrible as well. Spend the extra money and stay in a true 4 or 5 star hotel. Oh the bag of chips in the lobby were 14 US dollArs.... That's all :) don't do it!!!

From what i saw no need to go privilaged...,main brands, bacardi, smirnoff available just ask,you need upgrade for jd,absolut, and pernod,so if you don't drink those 3 no problems..beds are plentiful at pool and beach, again if you want a nice white canopy in a ringed of beach area upgrade, but i did not see much reason to do so..if you are an average person looking for good holiday then you will have no problems here......if you want a black armband and like to be a top notch for all to see by all means upgrade but personnally no need!!
Food...buffet choice varied and good, italian excellent, cooking demo in japanese great fun, mexican was probably3 out of 5..the midnight munchies very handy if you have night out...
Entertainment staff, they all work very hard, get involved if you want, if not no problem, night shows vary,we enjoyed some nights but usual holiday stuff has to suit everyone, live band on sat night excellent.
All staff very friendly and helpful, from" ola" in the morning to the smiling happy faces till last thing at night wonderful i wish i could be so happy at my work..
General all round happy place to holiday Wendy thomson holiday rep there if req but no pressure to take trips, although bit on the exspensive side the half day dolphin trip is a must.there is a fee bus to playa daily must be booked early though, taxi fixed price 200 pesos want break the bank if bus full. This is a small more friendly set up than some of the bigger hotel groups..
The gardens and areas are all very clean as are the rooms, any problems seem to be dealt with very quickly.
The area seems very secure and safe and did have no worry reg safety or personnel belongings
Slight negatives...the food on occasions could be hotter, they are a bit slow in refilling the hot plates, and the location is a bit far from playa about 10 miles, but good for transfers.
Overall this hotel with a few tweeks will be a very good high standard hotel and i will be returning.i will also try and pass the positve feel about the place to my line of work, highly recommended.......Thanks to all for a great holiday

Room Tip: like anything you will get better view of sea etc if you upgrade we didn't and the room was exce...
