“Great for beaches and water recreation”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 15 March 2004

We thought the resort was excellent, for us there was not any room problems. The grounds are kept in excelent condition. The food in the regular dining room was good with lots of choices to suit your personal choices. Yes other guests exploit the holding of shaded areas at the beach and pool by going early leaving a towel and then coming when it suited them. The staff at the pool and beach work hard to entertain you, just give them a chance and be polite just as you would in any social situation. The beach did have "murky water" due to a sea weed like material but this was cleaned up March 8 and 9, now the beach is quite clean subject to wind and rolling waves disturbing the sand.
There is not very good snorkling at the beach of El Mandarin but we had a good expeience going on the tour given by Blue diving traveling to Cozumel. Apparently you need a coral reef below the water to provide the habitat for the fish, sandy bottom is nice to walk on but does not sustain the fish. I have never been to the Mayan Riveria before and found it to be a tremendous experience of lovely sandy beaches, warm water, and fabulous sun shine for water recreation. The club El Mandarin was excellent and we would recommend it to anyone. Max & Pat

We stayed at this beautiful isolated location Feb.17 to Mar.02.04 The grounds were nice and kept very clean. The staff were all courteous and friendly and the service prompt. The food was varied and you could get as much as you want. The Mexican theme night was great. The walk south on the beach was nice although somewhat cluttered with refuse (plastic is the bain of the world). The room was functional and the beds firm the way we like it, however you experienced periodic cold showers particularly late in the day when everyone was getting ready for supper. The activities could keep you busy all day or you could quietly read as we did. There were not enough beach lounges and particularly lounge pads for all guests leading to a rush in the early morning to get out and reserve your location for the day (which is against hotel policy). We took a couple of side trips to Playa Del Carmin and Tulum to break up the 2 weeks. Getting through customs was a breeze although we waited an hour to get checked in on the way back. We would go back but not before trying other places.

We stayed at the resort from Feb. 25 thru March 1st. Our rooms (we had 3) were spacious and clean. No one in our group had any difficulty with air conditioning or lights. We were able to find lounge chairs on the beach, but most of the chairs had towels on them by 7:00 am. (I don't feel the resort should be faulted for rude guests.) The 'animation' staff was very friendly and tried to get every one involved. There were activities for those who chose to get involved. The grounds were beautiful and well maintained. We found the buffet enjoyable. Not everybody loved everything they took, but the presentation was lovely and there was no shortage to things to try. The guacamole was wonderful, our only complaint was there was none on the breakfast buffet the morning we left. :o) The only thing missing was wash clothes.. I would go back to Club El Mandarin, I just take a wash cloth.

My boyfriend and I stayed here from Feb 13-17. We have visited different parts of the Mayan Riviera, Cancun, Cozemel, and Isla Mujeres for vacation in the last 6 years. We thought it would be fun to try one of these "tucked away" resorts that we always saw the signs for along the highway. We picked El Mandarin after reading many reviews. Though I have never bothered to write one in the past, I want to warn anyone considering this resort to reconsider. Given that everyone looks for certain features in choosing vacation accommodations, I wasn't concerned that there seemed to be so many negative reviews. I thought they must be very fussy people. Here are just a few disappionting highlights........thank goodness we had planned the last 5 days of our vacation at another resort!: Poor service to rooms ...we were escorted to our room and ther were no lights and no air conditioning...we were told that there was a security key that we were supposed to get upon check in..we didn't get one. We were told by our escort that someone would come to help us. There we were in the heat and dark waiting, and waiting. I decided to hike back up to reception and found a maid nearby who gave me the security key to the room she was cleaning(I speak spanish, or else this wouldn't have worked) We got lights and our help arrived much later to ask us what we needed...not to bring a key! The rest of the unpleasantness revolved around the hotel's attempts to cut corners. There were too few lounge chairs in the pool and beach areas and even fewer tattered cushions. This resulted in people doing the "towel thing" at 6am to save a spot. Sometimes these saved spots were unoccupied for most of the day! The food was bad to marginally acceptable at the main buffet and beach. We could have stayed home for hot dogs and the cheese for the nachos came from a Velveeta dispensor.
The entres in the warming trays were not replaced until empty..........grilled fish in a warming try for more than an hour!
Talk about cardboard. Of course you could get a very greasy hamburger and cold pizza and fries any time! We were only able to secure a reservation at the fine dining one evening and only because someone cancelled their 8:45 reservation. We were told they were booked every night. When we were seated, though the dining room was quite spacious, there were only about a dozen table of fellow diners. The food here was quite good with nice wine and candlelight. The all inclusive is not entirely true, especially the free shuttle to Playa. This is one of the reasons we picked this resort....thinking we would be able to come and go rather inexpensively and conveniently. Though the staff who assisted with transportation shuttles were polite, one had to wait in line to sign up or for them to return from breaks to try and sign up and the only two free rides a day were always booked. The beach was pretty with nice walking potential but the water was murky. The pool area was nice though a bit loud. The weight lifting area was dangerous........out in the open near the pool with macho guys competing after spending a lot of time at the bar. There are many resorts in this price range that far superior in every way. Trust me, this one is simply not acceptable, even at a bargain price.

Overall, our experience at Club El Mandarin was fantastic. The dive shop is first class and all of the people involved in the diving operation are extremely helpful. The dive shop caters to divers and snorkelers of all levels and usually has plenty of reservations available. We were somewhat dissapointed with the quality of the food.
While in Mexico, we would have preferred more authentic mexican food instead of the "world" flavors often offered. All of the hotel staff are extremely helpful and very nice. A few complaints of the hotel include the folowing: The resort caters to an older crowd making it very hard for younger couples to meet and have a good time; The activities are catered to an older crowd (beach walking, water aerobics); There are only two bars at the resort, making it difficult to get drinks and there is not a bar in the swimming pool; Limited activities available (most people spend the day in lounge chairs, which is nice for an older crowd, but creates boredom for a younger crowd).
Overall the trip was a blast, though. The rooms are awesome and the staff is superb. I would definitely recommend the resort for my parents/grandparents. We will probably go back to Cozumel, which offers a few more activities.

We have just returned to Kelowna after spending a wonderful 2 weeks at El Mandarin. Our only complaint was the smoking in the eating areas.
Even though there was a no smoking area we still found this unacceptable and advised them of this on the comment card. other than that all the negative comments that people are whining about are just that. I heard of nobody that was unhappy while we were there. The Blue Dive Shop was excellent. The entertainment staff of about 20 were our favourites. Get to know them personally and it is even better. The cleaning staff were exceptional and the maintainence of the property is excellent. Anything that was asked for was taken care of immediately.
Perhaps the whiners should change their attitude when they go to a foreign country and things will go better for them. We will return to Mexico and we will be staying at this resort. Yes it does smell like people say..... but it is not sewer related. The beach is great but the water can get dirty..... make the best of it... it's nature. Walk the beach to the south and really enjoy yourself.. Oh, before I forget fly WESTJET not Air Canada on your trip from Canada and you'll be happy. If anybody has any criticism of the entertainment staff they should be ashamed of themselves. We had a great time everyday because of their antics and hard work. WE WILL RETURN.

I have nothing good to say about that place. People at the reception are rude. No good service. Room inadequate facing the kitchen and the parking. If you ask to change you will wait three days or more. The ocean water is BROWN. Beach chairs are broken then not confortable. At the Mexicain restaurant you have to eat with the cats!!!!!!! The worst vacation ever since 10 years.
