“GREAT RESORT, GREAT FOOD, GREAT STAFF”
Reviewed 20 April 2014

we were pleasantly surprised by what this resort had to offer. Location and layout are superb, food and drinks were to die for, and the staff was superfriendly and efficient. We never felt the place was crowded and the privacy of our little patio was an added bonus. We would definitely consider a second vacation there.

Room Tip: we would prefer a room in one of the villas over the main building

From the second we arrived and Michelle greeted us, we were looked after and treated like kings all the staff were fantastic with a special mention to Jovanetti at the bar and Azusena on the beach who kept us plied with drinks and laughing the whole time they are a credit to the company and no tips would do justice to the job they do! The food was fantastic and we especially enjoyed the Japanese and the blue moon where Pablo was a star creating the best Martini I've ever had. The scenery was beautiful and impeccably kept by the staff and the beach and pool areas spotless thank to the thankless task of the beach boy and all that seaweed. The weather was hot and sunny just what we wanted. The honeymoon sweet was fantastic with the veranda jacuzzi getting plenty of use. But most of all I'd like to thank Alisandra in the privilege lounge who was brilliant and looked after us and never failed to accommodate our every request no matter how strange (a bowl of fruit, slower service (I know just us)). If you go, and you should, you must also visit chichen itza for some culture (get Louigi at Thomson to be your guide he's a gem) and coco bongos and captain hooks for a night of craziness. All in all a perfect honeymoon we'd love to go back.

Room Tip: its an extra expense but privilege is worth the money, and a sea view is worth asking for some of th...

Thank you for posting a review on Tripadvisor. Thank you so much also for so many great coments made about the property but also about the staff. Michelle and Alisandra from Privilege Concierge will be very happy to know that all their effort have been rewarded with giving you the best honeymoon possible. Thank you also for mentioning other people from the staff, specially the beach boy, who works tireless everyday to keep the beach on good conditions for our guests.

We hope you come back to celebrate your first wedding aniversary with us!!

My wife and I had a great time at the Ocean Maya for the first weeks in April. The food was very good and we appreciated the no reservation policy for the four specialty restaurants. Entertainment was at times good. The ocean wasn't visible from a beach lounge chair because of the dirty glass until the day executives from the hotel chain paid a visit. Funny how that made a difference. Loved the Italian La Dolce Vita Restaurant and Oscar, who does a fantastic job there. And Nick the Juggler at the Asian is a fine cook and a treat to watch. The gym is good. Coffee bar was nice. The grounds and housekeeping is immaculate. The whole staff was so hard working and pleasant. So many good people working there such as Tila, Glenda and the smiling buzz saw Jovanetti (JoJo). Would love to go back again.

Ocean Maya Royale is about 8 miles north of Playa del Carmen's night life and you will need to take a cab to get there which can be expensive. $20 one way per person we were told at the desk, but there are ways around that and most people I spoke with didn't pay that much. You can catch a cab to the end of the entrance or walk less than a mile and take the local bus which runs every 10 to 15 minutes. This is a very relaxing hotel and the crowd is older and the nightlife quieter. This was our first time at an adults only and we loved it! We had room 3301 which is right by the pool area, two restaurants and two bars which makes it very easy to relax all day. The food was good but just like all inclusives it tends to get boring after 7 days. The staff is wonderful and always welcomes you with a smile.
The spa is very pricey. $65 for a pedicure and $136 for a 50 min. massage and the massages on the beach are an additional $10 more! The prices go up from there. You can get massages in Playa del Carmen for $20. The actual beach is very small due to beach erosion but there is a walkway with glass railing across the existing beach area and there are plenty of beach chairs available. If you want to sit by the pool all day you will need get up early (by 7am) to lay your stuff out on a chair. The entertainers are very nice and really try to put on a great show with limited means. The only real disappointment was the gym. It was very small with one treadmill, 3 bikes of which 2 did not work and 2 elipticals. There are some weights and machines. The equipment was in rough shape some of it duct taped.
There is Privileged area which costs about and extra $50 a day, we didn't feel it was worth it and just bought our alcohol at duty free when we arrived and saved us $600 dollars. Many of the Privileged members there were part of H10 premuim point packages that sell for $40,000 to $30,000 with a $200 yearly maintenance fee for 25 years. Don't sign up for this high pressure deal without contacting your lawyer, it's got scam all over it.
We would go back again.

This hotel is the best yet of all the 4 star and 5 star hotels we have visited across the Caribbean and the Indian Ocean in the last 15 months ( including Cuba, Dominican , Jamaica , Sri Lanka and The Maldives and Mauritius )

We travel regularly and therefore are able to give a pretty accurate comparison of hotel values

This hotel " ticks all the boxes " and anyone who is able to think up a complaint , ought to be locked up in a padded cell !

The food at this hotel is of the highest standard , is enormously varied and is 100 per cent freshly prepared and cooked for each meal time

The undisturbed surroundings of this hotel are idyllic , with swathes of a multitude of different Palm trees and colourful Tropical plants , giving way to acres of Mangrove jungles which teem with the cacophony of tropical birdsongs

The Ocean Royale is situated on a sandy promontory between 2 very long sandy bays ; beach walking is most enjoyable in both directions , with only a smattering of Resort Hotels dotted between the endless Palms which sway along the beaches

This area does suffer at times from strong winds ( as do most of the Caribbean islands ) and this causes turbulence in the seas which leads to a very stringy type of sea grass being washed up on the shoreline

The amount of this weed being washed up on the beach was minimal and the Hotel staff removed immediately any offending pieces which may have surreptitiously entered this Utopian beach scene

The sands are pure Talcum Powder white and as soft as silk

The sea was ok in the mornings but very warm in the afternoons ; snorkelling was possible on the days when the sea was calm , which was about half the time

Swimming is also possible in the warm waters of the 2 very large curving pools , one of which has a very popular " swim up bar "

Guests at this hotel were a mixture of Americans , Canadians, British , Germans and a smattering of Russians and other nationalities

All of them , I am pleased to say were in excellent spirits and there was no shoving or queue jumping at any time ( queues were virtually non existent as there are 5 restaurants for guests to choose from )

All the guests were extremely friendly and polite to each other which gave for a superb atmosphere at all times

This is a small Resort Hotel ( approximately 430 guests ) and is carefully laid out in villas , positioned at 45 degrees from the beach areas ; all the villas have a ground floor and a first floor , all have balconies and most have full or partial sea views

The villas are surrounded by beautiful Tropical gardens with a myriad of amazing Palms and deeply coloured flowering shrubs

The interior of the villas is very modern , and the beds are massive !

Bathrooms are immaculate and Designer toiletries and fresh towels are provided daily

Insects in this resort would enter at their peril !

We were fully prepared for the normal Mozzie Infantry attacks and went armed with Deet and every known Insect Repellant ; these were totally unnecessary as owing to the constant sea breezes , the Mozzies and other Human Nibblers had obviously given up on this area and had headed off to sunnier climes for their juicy mealtimes !

Owing to the fact that this is a smaller hotel than most , there was no shortage of beach beds , hammocks or Arabian style 4 Poster beach beds ( with canvas curtains )

This hotel does have a very lively Animation team who organise a whole medley of Daytime Activities as well as Evening Shows ( after Dinner )

Staff at the Ocean Royale are predominantly fluent English speaking and would immediately deal with any query or question ; any problem was instantly attended to in the most cheerful and helpful way

In fact , all the staff walk around for 24 hours with a permanent smile on their faces ; nothing was ever too much trouble for any of them

So as I said at the beginning of this epistle, this is a first rate hotel which cannot be faulted

Room Tip: Overweight guests should choose Ground floor rooms as the First floor rooms are accessed by a small...

Overall had a very good time at Ocean Maya. The entertainment team was very good at the pool area each day with the activities. Enjoyed a Hobie Cat on the sea for the first time and it was a blast! The restaurants were nice but the food was bland overall. Tried each of the outlets and basically the same throughout the resort. Most of the other staff members were really nice...more "hola's" then I've ever heard! We enjoyed our time here but will probably search out new frontiers on our next visit. A little to far removed from everything for us. (20 min to Playa, $20 cab each way)

Room Tip: Few rooms can see the sea.

My husband and I enjoyed stay at Ocean Maya Royale. The grounds were clean and well tended. We were in room 3303, which is just steps away from the pool and Privilege beach area. This was a blessing because my husband has a difficult time walking very far. We had a king size bed, functioning fridge, and a clean room. We enjoyed all of the restaurants and received good service and good food. My favorite meal was the duck at the Blue Moon, which was cooked to perfection! We found all of the staff to be friendly and courteous. We can't say enough good things about Alisandra, who booked our dinner reservations. She was polite professional, and very helpful. She wanted to make sure our every need was being met, and that we were using the services that were available. We also found Azusena to be an absolute delight. She was extremely efficient at tending to our needs in the Privilege beach area. She is a hard worker who always had a smile on her face, and served everyone with the same enthusiasm and joy. We found her joy to be contagious!

We would recommend this resort.

Room Tip: The rooms in building 33 are close to the pool and beach and very quiet at night.
