“Occidental Grand Xcaret”
Reviewed 13 July 2014

A beautiful all inclusive Resort built into the Yucutan Rain Forest that at once is impressive, but can be overpowering in its sheer size! You need a shuttle to get from one side of the resort to the other to enjoy the expansive pools, Waterfall bar, bridges over the swimming area and local trinket shops at poolside. In addition to the main hotel there are 23 other buildings to house the multitude of guests. Although the place was at capacity, it is so large that we never felt the feeling of being crowded!
The food is plentiful at the 3 Buffets but varied in quality. The 4 reservations only restaurants offer Asian- the best, Seafood next best, Mediteranean- so so and Mexican standard fare along with a Pizza shop and Taco Stand.

The man Man made Lagoon makes up for the lack of a sandy coastline and is a bit cramped, but there are levels to allow for beach seating for everyone. You want to got out their early in the AM if you want a prime Palapa at the waters edge!
The crystal clear water is inhabited by many school size local fish who enjoy a daily snack of dinner rolls from the Pescador restaurant above. Swimmers are enthralled in the way these friendly denizens will circle you as you swim among them. If you want peace and quiet, there is an adult only Salt Water Pool at the end of the Jetty that is fed from the waves lapping over the rocks from the Caribbean sea, Cool and Refreshing!!
Service is quite friendly with an Ola or Buenos Dias from pretty much everyone you meet on the staff.
A major benefit is that the resort borders the expansive Xcaret National Park, 48 Hectares, where there are over 50 attractions of both activities, entertainment and Wildlife showcasing the beauty and history of the local natural environment and ancient culture including Ruins, a historic Church and Cemetery, underground river, caves and Mayan Ball Field.

A vacation more for those who crave activity as there are also many local attractions that afford Zip-lining, treks trough the jungle, Snorkel or Scuba diving etc.

All in All a great vacation.

We spent 9 nights here following a hectic week in vegas so was ready for some chilling out time and that,s exactly what we got although we was badgered by numerous staff members to book trips!
The private beach is beautiful as are the numerous pools.
The food was great but for me the highlight was the staff. They couldn't do enough for us and always polite, helpful and happy.
The downside was the Mosquitos. We used 3 bottles of mozzie spray but as it's built around the jungle we was bit badly.
I had read numerous reviews before we went and to be honest was a little apprehensive. Some said that the food wasn't great or you couldn't get a sun bed but we had none of these problems.
Would define toy stay again but take a better mosquito spray.

This is the first time we have stayed at an all inclusive and it was a great introduction to it. We found the whole stay very enjoyable with a wide range of food, drink, and activities available to us.

We had booked a couple of excursions in advance, but also booked on once arrived. With these and the pools at the hotel, and the easy access to Xcaret we were never short of something to do. In fact we could have done with staying an extra few days to enjoy chilling by the pool some more :)

We'd definitely recommend getting the pass to Xcaret which allows unlimited access from the hotel. There is so much to do there, we went back three different days, and still would have liked time to do more.

We paid to stay in the Royal Club which we think was definitely worth it. The reception desk was very helpful, and not cluttered with timeshare reps like the main reception (these pestering and devious reps only downside to the hotel for us). The rooms are away from the main hub of the site and therefore always fairly quiet. They are grouped around the pool which is for those in the Royal Club only. We mostly used this pool as it was a lot more peaceful. The restaurant in the Royal Club is also excellent with great staff. Happy to help with menu choices, and happy to have a friendly chat. It was much nicer having this option for breakfast rather then the buffet.

We did visit the buffet for a couple of meals when back late, and it was fine. Though I did overhear an English woman complaining about their being nothing to eat, then later seeing her with something that looked very like chicken nuggets and chips!!!! As another English woman I have to say there was plenty to eat. Loads of choice and it changed each day.

The a la carte restaurants were all nice in different ways as we were able to visit them all. Of course it depends which food you like best as to which you will prefer. The service in all of them was very good. We also visited the pool bar for lunch, and the beach bar for mid morning drinks. Both open to the air and very nice to just sit and relax in too.

The site has many pools, and there is loads of scope to walk around a lot to counteract all the food on offer. The gym was decent for the time of premises, with some free weights as well as machines. The Spa was lovely too. The deep tissue massage was something else. And I felt so much better for it afterwards too.

All in all an excellent hotel, and we both had a fantastic time :)

Room Tip: Pay a bit more and stay in the Royal Club. Having the extra pool and restaurant make it worthwhile.

First time in Mexico and I wasn't disappointed. Great hotel, great location (45 min from Cancun Airport, 10 minute Taxi from Playa del Carmen), great setting (Jungle bordering onto the coast, smack next to the Xcaret and Xplor parks), great service and hospitality - and great value.

The staff are fantastic and will do everything they can to help, the hotel is very clean and the lobby/public spaces are amazingly well kept. The all inclusive includes pretty much all brands of alcohol (1800 Tequila, Absolut Vodka, Bombay Sapphire to name but a few) and the "buffet" food is pretty good.

I visited 4 other hotels while over there and without exception, the Grand at Xcaret beat them all. Please note that this was just the grand, not the Royal Club (which is effectively a small section of the complex) - I looked around and the Royal has a few bells and whistles, but particularly for a European traveller, these are bells and whistles come at a cost that I would suggest you spend on excursions.

The hotel complex itself has some unusual features - monkeys, flamingoes, deer and coaties roam the green bits between buildings (and there are LOTS of green bits) - and there are hundreds of iguanas apparently keeping the bug population under control (did not see a single cockroach or bug bigger than an ant). There is a real "Eco" theme to the hotel (and attached park).

Criticisms? I have 2. The WiFi on site is rubbish - poor availability, poor speeds, random drops. they need to fix this ASAP, as WiFi is becoming as essential to most travellers as AC or towels.

The 2nd is the restaurants. Not the food, but they lack the capacity to deal with the numbers of guests wanting to reserve a "non buffet" meal. 24 or 48 hours notice is needed usually, and they lack the process to efficiently turnover tables and recover cancellations. You can play the system by booking four or five days in one go - but then you either get locked in to a plan or risk becoming part of the problem.

Cocktails - they vary in quality from bar to bar and from beer tender to beer tender - but if you just talk to the guys like human beings and explain you want *this* much tequila, *this* much orange and just *this* much grenadine - then all is well :)

Lastly, this place has a very small "cove" like beach. Great little area for snorkelling, tons of fish, and a real sun trap - but if you want miles of white sandy beach, this place is simply not for you.

I would recommend this place without reservation.

Room Tip: OK. Tips: 1. Buffet - Eat Fresh...get to Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner early to get the best quality and c...

Before our arrival I initially had mixed feelings about staying at this hotel due to the other people negative feedback on this forum, granted some of it may have been justified but overall I do not understand what some people were complaining about especially since you do get more than what you pay for and it’s not the most expensive hotel in the area!! Im glad that I stuck with my choice, I have stayed at various 4/5 star hotels throughout the world and would consider myself as someone with decent standards, in fact I can be insatiable at times. So I can honestly say that I really enjoyed my experience at the hotel. Check-in was thorough and fast, services were good and members of staff were very friendly.

The food in the buffet restaurants were more than satisfactory but I can understand other peoples comments on the food being regularly repeated, but on the plus side you do have the option of making reservations at the al a carte restaurants at which the food was superb, my husband said that ‘it was the best steak that he has ever eaten’ granted he may have had a couple of glasses of wine at this point but the steak was truly succulent at the stake a grill restaurant and those standards were held at the other al a carte restaurants. You have an option of making reservations for 4 restaurants at a time, just as long as you are booking it for 24 hours in advance. They provide top line alcohol but I found that the wine was a bit of hit and miss especially the white wine, the cocktails were nice but they were slightly watered down.

The hotel is set out on lovely grounds with vast wildlife seeing that it is in the jungle. There is a shuttle bus that takes to you certain points of the hotel if you do not wish to walk and a boat that takes to to Xcaret. I personally didn't use these.

If you are looking for a vast amount of sand on a large beach this may not be for you but If you are content with a man made beach and several pool area as per myself, I don’t think it would impact on your vacation. Overall I enjoyed my stay and I would suggest that you take other peoples negative views with a pinch of salt

We were contacted immediately after making our reservation by Valery, manager of the Royal Club, who set up restaurant reservations and gave us recommendations for activities on and off the property. Valery met us at the Royal Club upon our arrival and had prepared everything for us down to the last detail. The hotel staff was outstanding and always very accommodating. The room was beautiful, with so many added touches. The beds were very comfortable. The grounds are luscious and inviting. The pools are pristine and refreshing and the beach is quaint, peaceful and relaxing. The beach can also be a very active and fun place, with games, exercise and contests led by Occidental's amazing activity staff. The food in all the restaurants was tremendous. We would especially recommend El Pescador, Oriental, and La Hacienda. The seafood, Asian and Mexican cuisines are spectacular. The service throughout the resort was exceptional. This is a very well managed facility. This was our second time at occidental Xcaret. We have come as a family and as a couple and it has surpassed every expectation each time. It is also ideally located next to Xcaret Park and close to many other local attractions.

Room Tip: While all the rooms are outstanding, I would recommend the Royal Club, because the guests have exclu...
