“Honeymoon”
Reviewed 30 July 2014

We stayed at the Occidental Grand Xcaret for 9 nights in July for our honeymoon and loved it! We had a junior suite that was very spacious, clean and the air conditioning was excellent and most welcome as it was extremely hot weather whilst we were there! Everything was in perfect working order. The bed was comfortable and very big. In our room on arrival was a bottle of tequila, sparkling wine and a lovely bowl of fruit. We were in the Virgin Holidays block 22 and had a ground floor room, in hindsight I think a higher floor would have had better views. Also a small snake had sneaked in, this was removed swiftly by a member of staff!
The resort is big and spread out but did not seem overly busy even though it was full to capacity. The ground are beautiful with many pools and bars to choose, we used them all depending on what mood we were in but loved the pool with the swim up waterfall bar best.
The beach is gorgeous with many tropical fish swimming around you, we took a snorkel but you could see them clearly just standing in the shallow waters without snorkelling. But the beach is very small and as everyone has mentioned.. so this may not be suitable for everyone.
The food was okay, we do not normally do all inclusive holidays so I think we are used to better quality but we always found something to eat even if we did not know exactly what it was! I think the food is aimed at the USA market. The speciality restaurants were better than the buffet but book the speciality restaurants as soon as you arrive as we did not get a choice of times or restaurants.
The staff are exceptional everywhere. Always smiling and making you feel welcome. Service in all the bars, restaurants and pools was excellent.
We took a taxi into Playa Del Carmen one day, the beach there was amazing, lots of shops and bars but you do get harassed by various sales people a lot walking through the town this was really tedious!
Xcaret Eco Park next to the hotel was great. We had unlimited passes and must have visited it at least 3 times and still did not get to see it all. The show at the park in the evening was packed with people and very hot but absolutely amazing and worth the discomfort!
The only downside is the expensive Wifi.

Planning second group trip. The hotel has everything I needed; from couple to-do to family activities. The food was delicious and authentic. The staff was great. The hotel activies plus the eco-friendly park was the perfect experience for my family and I.

The rooms were okay, beds were harder than a rock. We requested a pad for the bed three times, finally on the fourth day making the request we were told nothing like that existed. Our shower drained really slow and you ended up standing in an inch or more of water every time you showered. We reported this the first day and it was never fixed. I think the standing water caused our room to smell continually musty. The food at the restaurants you could reserve was delicious...the buffet was what you would expect from a buffet. The bartenders at the poolside bars were great. We still ended up having a great time even if the room wasn't as nice as it could have been.

I would not have spent the extra for the all inclusive entry into Xcaret. The credits they tell you that you will receive for use at the park/hotel are really just coupons only to be used on specific items, not at all what we had planned for. Save your money and just pay for a day pass to Xcarat.

We stayed at the Occidental Grand Xcaret for 4 nights in July 2014 and have to say we were impressed by the friendly staff, delicious food and excellent accommodations! If you are looking for a paradise away from the bustle of Cancun and want to experience the Mexican heritage, Mayan history, ecological and geological surroundings, this resort is a must!!! One note, if you are looking for a beach, this is not the place to stay, but if you want a beautiful lagoon with beach side amenities, you will not be disappointed. We definitely recommend OGX and look forward to our return trip!!!

Room Tip: The Jr. Suites are a wonderful size with plenty of room and balcony space.

All Inclusive is definitely the way to go. My wife and I Stayed 7 nights in July 2014. Booked through Costco. Overall Outstanding from start to finish. This hotel is very nice with outstanding service, food, amenities, attractions and events. The hotel is bordered by TWO "amusement" parks that are a MUST. 1.Explore (Fuego is at night and we recommend you go at night) and 2. Xcaret Park. Book these at the hotel. ALSO, book the all day Xel-Ha excursion. We would not recommend Telum unless you are eager to tour ruins. Xel-Ha is good for the whole day. Don't miss the show at Xcaret Park at 7:00 p.m.

There were no mosquitos as we were never bit. No drinking water issues. No food issues. Order a bottle of biodegradable sunscreen from Amazon before you go.
Highly recommended. Have fun!!!

This is by far one of the best hotels we have stayed at (we are frequent travellers). We're so happy we based our choice on the great/good reviews vs the few bad ones. The entrance is breathtaking! There is also a pond which turns into a long canal (all the way to XCaret). Here, you can feed the fish and see many parrots which we enjoyed a lot! STAFF: Very helpful & polite. Please be careful not to get conned into attending a Time share meeting or receiving a free gift. Unless, you willingly wish to purchase a hotel room. This started to get on our nerves but not enough to ruin our day! ROOMS: Loved our room. Clean, colourful with a Mexican deco. Nothing wrong with it such as stains, dripping water, etc...However do keep in mind that it is very humid in June/July, therefore it does smell of humidity. We kept the AC on to help control the humidity. FOOD: Amazing! If you can't find something you love, then it is obvious that you are an extremely picky eater! The Buffet is delicious (morning, lunch & supper). We did enjoy having lunch by the beach restaurant twice (tacos, hamburgers, hot dogs, fries, salad, etc...). A la carte restaurants are also very delicious! Our favourite ones were the Sonora Steakhouse and the El Pescador (seafood). The Oriental is also very good but not excellent. BEACH: Okay, here we go. We were NOT disappointed at all as we knew prior to our arrival that it was a man made beach. Sure, if you enjoy long walks on the beach, well, they won't be long ;) But it is truly a paradisiac setting! We especially enjoyed the pool (salt water, adults only) which faces the ocean. The view is breathtaking!! Also if you enjoy snorkelling, you are in for a treat! So many beautiful and unique different types of fish. Another good thing about the beach for parents, is that it is shallow at first. Therefore, less stress with the children :) POOLS: Huge pools, not too crowded. However for us, the water was a bit too hot. But obviously, this is out of their control due to the very warm climate. There are lots of chairs and umbrellas for you to relax. The walk to the pool and to the beach by the way, is definitely NOT as bad as some reviews mention (10 min. max to the beach). Just the walk itself is worth it as there is a path through the jungle. You will see all sorts of wild animals (monkeys, iguanas, birds, etc...).
If you are looking for activities to do during your stay, here are a few suggestions: XCaret is an ecological and historical theme park. You can take the water taxi to get there (and don't forget to tip the driver ;) ) or you can simply walk there (approximately 10 min. walk). We enjoyed it a lot. Especially the long underground river where you will be able to snorkel at the end of the caves. The night show is a MUST! We were so mesmerized by the cultural rendition of the history of Mexico. The "actors" were very talented and believable. We felt as though we were along for the ride! The show gave us goosebumps!

We have stayed at this hotel before, but this time we invited several family members for a family-reunion (ages ranged from a baby 1yr. 5mos. to the Grandfather who is 80 years old) & to celebrate our son's baptism. We have always enjoyed our time at this hotel and this time was no exception. We had an absolutely wonderful time. The service was better than ever! The staff out did itself, especially Chef Marcos Balam Rivero, who made cochinita pibil for us simply because my husband asked if they had it. We also booked a photo session with the Ocean Photo staff and were blown-away by the excellent work they did in our photo session and photographing our son's baptism. I highly recommend this resort.

Room Tip: First Club and Royal Club rooms are more spacious.
