“Great stay - 14 days to chill and relax”
Reviewed 27 June 2014

We stayed at the Riu Lupita from 21st April for 2 weeks. We were allocated a room on the ground floor and having read the reviews asked for one on the first or second floor. We were allocated a 2nd floor room backing onto the ‘jungle’, which gave us lots of entertainment watching the birds and animals.

The room had a vaulted ceiling which gave a lovely big room feel. The bathroom was clean, as was the room. The room could be described as basic and could have done with a chair or small settee to relax on. The balcony had a small table and two chairs.

Food:
There are two restaurants on the main site and a cafe. There is also a beach bar serving food and drink and it turns into a steak bar in the evening. The beach bus takes you all down there at the same time, it’s like a little trip out.
Dress code is very casual and this I must admit helped us both unwind and chill. The staff went the extra mile when we were there to make cocktails, put on themed meal nights and generally be very attentive.
Food quality and choice was great too.

Entertainment:
There was something for at least 10 out of the 14 nights we were there. The acts ranged from great to mediocre. The entertainment staff really gave their all and were great at running the daytime activities.

Reception staff & Housekeeping:
Both very helpful and would go the extra to make sure you had what you needed.
The room - on the plus side you can have a nice cool drink whenever you want to but the downside to that was the noise from air-conditioning and the fridge. There was also a ceiling fan.

Car Hire:
We hired a car whilst we were there and found it to be reasonable. Driving was ok and there was lots of checkpoints around and some huge, and I mean huge, sleeping policemen. We didn’t drive at night to be fair so if you do be warned of the huge humps you come across without any notice!

The hotel was just the right size, the staff got to know you as you as there aren’t thousands of guests and give you smiles and happiness at meal times. I can honestly say that the staff were happy and content going about their daily duties. This can make a big difference. We also saw them decorate a few tables for special occassions.

Lots of sunbeds at the pools and the beachside and oh yes, hammocks. I loved them and we bought one to bring home with us.

Lovely time and just what we needed, no stresses or strains, a nice relaxing break.

Room Tip: There are lots of local animals and we specifically asked for an above ground floor room. Glad we d...

I think the problem with this hotel is the 5 star tag and what you are expecting from it - after all there are 5 star and then not so 5 star hotels, this one falls into the latter category. It is the smallest of the 6 Rui hotels in Playacar, and is also the quietest and most laid back.

Location: In Playacar next door to the Golf course, this means you are a 10 Min bus ride away from the beach and the main shops. The hotel provides a free bus service (bit rickety) which leaves the hotel every 30 mins.
Beach: The hotel provides a beach club which provides sunbeds and a cafe type area with drinks and hot/cold food.
Rooms: Spotlessly clean (as all in Mexico tend to be) and functional - the decor is tired.
Hotel Grounds: well maintained with two pools and children playground.
Restaurant: The man Buffet restaurant is large and the food is excellent, lots of choice, all freshly cooked and great service. There is also a small Mexican Restaurant which you have to book for.
The main Bar is also the beach bar next to pool with an outdoor stage area opposite.
All of the staff work very hard to provide great service and cheesy but fun entertainment.

We had a great time at the Lupita - would we go back again?... No because I want something more 5 Star.

We stay few days and then we move to a better hotel in front of the beautify beach of Playa del Carmen. The room was clean and the food was good too but in General you could choose any other Hotel Riu that shows where much better, with real 4 or 5 stars as the the Lupita!

In May / June 2014 I stayed in five hotels during a tour of the Yucatan Peninsula. For the last hotel of the trip I decided to go 'higher-end' and chose the Riu Lupita in Playa. Admittedly I was not on the sort of holiday that the hotel is focused on, but even so it was a major disappointment. Essentially, although having five stars on the entrance sign, the hotel is like a 1960's Butlins camp re-imagined in 1985. Even the wi-fi was decades out of date - available in the lobby only, 90 minutes a day (in one session) free then $15 afterwards. How does an all-inclusive modern, expensive hotel seriously think that is good enough? All round this is a hotel struggling to catch up with what the rest of the world accepts as first-class service and facilities. In need of an urgent rethink.
For those interested in wildlife, the pools on the nearby golf course are a good place to visit for the evening roost of ibises, egrets and herons. There are also Least Grebe and Whistling Ducks resident.

Rooms are average, clean but a little old, air conditioner is very noisy.
Remember to always keep your drink with you and watch they making it.
I dont recommend the disco inside the hotel you may end up with scopolamine and you may wake up next day with only your pants, safe empty, no passport, no money.
used to be at barcelo resorts there and is much better even a 4stars is better than this riu.
good luck with them.if ya want a taxi dont pay more than to go to the beach or 5th avenue.
bathroom shower dont work well you cant keep the water at the right temp.very low pressure also.
have fun.

Room Tip: there is a new area of the hotel that has been renewed, if u dont like the room go back to the recep...

Last year we have stayed at Riu Hotel in Cabo and had a great time so we figured we couldn't go wrong staying at another Riu hotel. However we were extremely disappointed. The hotel was not beachfront at all. Actually it was located in a residential zone called Playacar. The hotel did offer shuttle service to their Beach Club as well as 5th Ave shopping area. The entertainment that the hotel offered was at times cringe worthy. The service was good and everyone was friendly. The rooms were large but the bed was extremely hard and our AC did not work the first night. The food was basically recycled and same every night. The Cozumel Restaurant on the beach front was OK but required reservations in advance. The Beach Club was nice and had a small pool, bar, and small buffet area. We did enjoy the beach. The water was calm, blue, and warm. If we had to do it again, we would not choose an All Inclusive hotel and instead would stay at a beach front hotel.

Pros: Free shuttle service to 5th Ave Shopping and Riu Beach Club, good service, affordable, nice beach club

Cons: Location, food, entertainment, rooms, Beach Club closes at 5pm, NOT on the beach.

Staying in this hotel was quite an adventure.
Bussing to the beach was the real one. Waiting
In the morning to get in, then accept a few kicks
In my legs by guys with strollers. Then walk to the beach (limping). Thanks, no more.
The hotel has just one bar and one pool. There is
a smaller pool by disco, but it's boring.
Drinks were low quality, entertainment was so so.
Food was hit or miss. Had a few days with good quality and variety of food , but the rest was not impressive.
My room was OK (1100 block , backing to the golf course) but the view from the balcony was spoiled by
the fence with barbed wire.
It was my first and last shot for this hotel. Waste of time and money.
