“Authentic and so personable!”
Reviewed 28 September 2013

My girlfriends and I had the most amazing stay here. The resort is very relaxing and never felt too busy. We felt right at home for the week we stayed and when we weren't doing nothing but sunning ourselves on the beach, our days were spent filled with all sorts of impromptu and drop-in activities: snorkeling, sailing on the Catamaran, bocce ball, volleyball, Cornhole, soccer, bingo, salsa making classes, tequila tasting! David is the best director of activities and made us feel welcome! Gerardo, the lifeguard kept us safe and got involved in the activity time as well! The lounge chairs on the beach were so comfy and one night they brought in a mariachi band and had a free buffet and fiesta! It was a very unique experience! I am definitely going to take another trip here ;)

We have been owners at FV for 18 years and I cannot express how disappointed and disgusted we are at the decline in this property. At one time FV was an excellent, 5 star resort. It has been going downhill for the past 10 years and we are wondering how much worse it can get.

When we check in, just let us go to our room and begin our vacation. We don't want to waste 30 minutes being pressured to attend a presentation for your new properties. Based on our experience of the decline at Fisherman's, do you really think we would buy into an other of your resorts? Unfortunately your representatives do not take no for an answer and we had to border on being rude when declining the invitation to tour Tres Rios. When we requested a specific room we were told that it was not available, UNLESS we agreed to tour Tres Rios.

This year for our $980 annual maintenance fee we got: broken and stained lounge chairs at the pool and on the beach, disgusting stained cushions on the "rattan" beach furniture, drinks served in cheesey 6 oz glasses, burnt hamburgers and cold nachos, not enough beach umbrellas at the pool or on the beach, bath size towels for use on the beach instead of regular beach towels, a 4 cup coffee maker in a room for 8 people, lack of kitchen utensils and equipment - I could go on. This may sound petty, but it hasn't always been this way and these small things are just a reflection of the lack of management's interest in maintaining a quality property.

The only food we enjoy at FV is breakfast at La Terraza. Unfortunately one morning we waited 15 minutes for coffee (there were only 2 other tables of diners there) and they wanted to serve the coffee in styrofoam cups. That was the last time we had breakfast at FV.

Because in the past the food has been so bad, we chose not to do the meal program. When I ordered a drink from the pool bar, I had to wait 10 minutes after my drink was made for someone to bring a slip so I could charge the drink to our room. You just lost any more of our business at the pool bar.

Every year we are told they are refurbishing and upgrading. Guess we were in the one room that hadn't been done yet. As for staff, where did the great staff like Olivia in La Terraza and Luis the activities director go? The current staff is very friendly and eager to please, but woefully untrained - with the exception of the housekeeping staff, Marcial and Luis at the front desk. Someone should take the microphone away from Carlos. He is annoying and his "69" comments during Bingo that he thought was so funny was uncalled for and inappropriate.

Fishermen's has such potential and with better trained staff and decent food, it could be a money maker for Sunset. Why doesn't management recognize this? Instead, it declines a little more every year. We are not looking forward to returning next year, unfortunately being owners we feel like we are stuck. It's doubtful that management will pay any attention to these complaints. Such a waste for what Fishermen's used to be and could be again.

Enjoyed our stay, even with the rain. Beach is fabulous, and great that you can walk to downtown Playa Del Carmen. Food was very good., though it would be nice if the menu had a bit more variety. Two employees stood out-Ricardo Perez at the bar was very fun-have him make you rainbow shots! Jorge Mayorga, waiter, NEVER slows down, serving you as promptly as humanly possible. Both were outstanding!! Everyone there was friendly and accommodating. Great location to ride bikes as well.

Sunset Fishermen Spa & Resort was amazing. Our expectations were exceed by far. Carlos and David from activities were great. They were great with all the guests and really made us feel like family. They made sure to invite us to all of their daily activities wether it was water aerobics, volleyball, or tequila tastings. Gerardo the lifeguard was great too. He also took part in making sure we were having a great stay. He made sure all the guests were safe and appropriately equipped for beach activities. Jesus and Ricardo took great care of us at the bar and made sure our glasses never went empty. Make sure you try the 12 Shot Rainbow. Benjamin the waiter was great and was really informative regarding places to see and stuff to do. Sairy at the front desk made sure we had everything we needed and was always attentive to making sure we were having a great time.

I would strongly recommend you to visit Sunset Fisherman Resort. We truly felt like family. The grounds were well kept with amazing attention to detail. Even the beach sand was raked every morning to make sure there was no seaweed where the water met the sand. WOW!!! The staff is very proud to be a part of the Sunset establishment.

This was my first time at Sunset Fisherman. The staff is amazing here, they are so friendly and helped us to enjoy the rainy week that we had in Mexico. Ricardo was our favorite bartender, ask him to make you a jellyfish shot!! The food was ok, seemed like since it was off season, that they had the same menu every single night. So although it was very good, we would have liked a little more variety. David and Carlos were amazing at keeping us entertained!! Great staff, beautiful place, and from what we heard, the food has more variety during the busy season!!

Room Tip: Ask for a ground floor room, the ones by the spa are the best!!

We have visited the Hotel two times and we will return every year. The staff is more than friendly, helpful and kind, we found a lot of new friends between them. We remember Jose R always ready to serve an excellent drink or the best food, Benjamin Viveron with his sparkling Mayan Coffee (you have to taste this beverage, pure fire in the night and over your table) made with Xtabentun a Mayan liquor, Alejandro always taking care of us and offering the best options for lunch or dinner, the girls Saily and Massiel Desmoctt were so lovely and efficient that we will never forget them, I want you all to know them. More than an excellent place near (very near) the beach, good food and a comfortable room we found the human warm of people who wants us to feel well in the place. They did their best to achieve it, and they did it. We miss them all.
We are member of the Sunset Group and we wanted you to know the endless possibilities of the membership: call me, Jose, 305-261-3141 or email jaborr@msn.com and I will tell you more.

Sunset Fisherman spa and resort is amazing on the Riveria Maya. A very relaxed atmosphere where you get to know the staff who can't do enough for you! Good food, good drinks, sun and fun. Just a short walk to the town of Playa del Carmen. Condos have a beautful view and are well appointed. Going back for a second trip in October.
