“Cooking lessons with Chef Lázaro!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 15 March 2014

Chef Lázaro gave us an excellent lesson in making decadent crepes. He shared his simple secrets with us in making perfect complimentary sauces to cover rhe peach filled crepes. Lázaro loves working for Fishermens and enjoys the beauty of this paradise in Mexico!
Thank you Lázaro and thank you Sunset Fishermens.

Our two weeks stay at Fishermen's was very enjoyable. Fun seeing old friends and staff and meeting new ones. Few resorts can match the proximity to the beautiful ocean and white sandy beach. The welcome buffet helps to take away the pain of registration and the welcome party on Sunday is delightful.
Marcial, the bell man, is always so friendly and always gives us a warm greeting and he remembers our names. We always look forward to seeing him when we visit Fishermen's.
Miguel, Concierge, was very helpful in meeting our needs and always available when he was on site.
Oscar, front desk, was always very helpful and he had a great sense of humor.
Sairi, reception, always pleasant and friendly and want to help when ever we needed something.
Miguel Ojeda, member services. We now have more confidence that the room assignments and reservation system will be handled more competently. This has been one of our biggest frustrations when making reservations and getting our confirmations in a timely manner.
Gerardo and Ana, Activities staff. They did a great job in trying to please everyone with activities. They had a variety of games and forms of entertainment and attempted to reach all ages of guests that were staying at the resort. Fun people to be around.
Wait staff were all very accommodating. We especially enjoyed Rafael, Alejandro, Adan and of course Victor.
Last but not least our spa visits are one of the highlights of our trip. Reception-Noemi was very efficient and communicates very well. Luis has been giving us massages for years and he is an excellent therapist. Vicki-we enjoy her too and she is always very fun.
Some comments and suggestions: the WiFi needs to be improved in the rooms. It was nice to finally have WiFi in the rooms, but it only worked part of the time.
The upgrades in the rooms were appreciated.
The cushions on the beach lounges were nice, but there still is a battle over the umbrellas and reserving chairs not being used.
When signing on items purchased at the resort, i.e. meals, drinks, etc., they need to give the person signing a copy of the receipt at time of signing.
Most of the TV channels are in Spanish and we would appreciate a greater selection of TV stations in English.
.

Room Tip: request a room with an unobstructed view of ocean. The sunrises are beautiful

Fishermen's gets better all the time. We attended a 'mole' cooking demonstration today at lunch time. Very well organized and explained in English by Lazario , a young man who wants to become an accredited chef in his future. The complicated prep for this exotic recipe had been done well before we sat down for the demonstration. Within half an hour we were eating a very delicious version of this Oaxacan treat. Lazario was a big part of this, with Miguel putting on the finishing touches. Hope this happens again next Monday, as we'll still be here.

Room Tip: This is a very small hotel. Every room is close to the sea. Some are up a couple of flights, but the...

First, the best part of Fisherman's is the food service staff and the doorman. I know I won't remember them all, but Victor, Alehandro, Hector, Aran and all of the wait staff bent over backwards with kindness, courtesy, and a happy smile to serve us. They all go above and beyond and made our vacation very memorable!

Sergio at the breakfast grill makes amazing omlettes! You can watch him do it, and it is a very simple item to make, but we kept asking why our omlettes never come out that good!

Marcial at the front door is the warmest, most knowledgeable man. Forget the conceirge desk. The few times we went to the concerige, we found they didn't speak English very well, and were just not terribly helpful, but Marcial will tell you everything you need to know about the area.

The fact that this resort is very small compared to others was a plus for us. We enjoyed the friendly atmosphere that comes with a place this size. Also, the beach is just beautiful.

Now for the disappointments. As many others have said, the structure itself is clean, beds are comfortable, but the appearance is about equivalent to a Quality Inn back home. Our shower was awful; it took forever for the hot water to arrive, and the shower head itself was not very strong so rinsing hair took a while. The TV got a few channels, most in Spanish (which I expected, as this IS Mexico), but many channels had no audio and picture quality was not great. (We only turned on the TV once, as we aren't on vacation to watch TV.) The chairs on our patio were metal with no cushion to sit on, and they made an awful racket if you tried to move them. The "hot tub" on the patio is kind of funny: it's tiny and doesn't look very clean. I didn't see anyone use them. It's not a luxury resort.

I went there with friends who have owned properties at both Fishermans and Tres Rios for many, many years (read: a ton of their money has gone to this company), and they planned a once-in-a-lifetime trip for their siblings and spouses/significant others. Way in advance, they reserved 5 suites together all with water views. When they arrived, they were given NO water view rooms, and nobody is together. We were in three different buildings, and 3 couples had to share a suite (we were all supposed to have separate suites, so now 6 people were together all the time, hoping for hot water in the shower, etc.). The management made some concessions because of the "mix-up," but my friend had to work for it. It just shouldn't have happened in the first place!

We never sat by the pool or on the beach beds because, as others have said, when you go out for a sunrise walk on the beach you find that there are already books, flip flops, etc. on them "reserved" by guests in the wee hours. That kind of practice just should not be allowed. It's like grade school stuff ... "this is MY chair all week, you will have to go sit way ... over ... there ..."

We had a couples massage. He was on his table on the other side of the room, and I was on mine quite a distance away. I never had a couples massage before. I thought there would be some romantic notion to it, but it was just two people having a massage at the same time. I understand that Vicky gave a good massage, but Luis just rubbed-rubbed-rubbed me like he was going to be late for something. I've had better massages.

I see other people commending the activities staff, but we didn't really see anything going on. One in our party wanted to take the spanish class, and Ana kept saying, "You don't REALLY want to do that, do you?" There never was a spanish class. We thought about doing yoga or a dance lesson, but never saw it happening (or maybe we weren't there at the time).

I had a great time, and these things didn't ruin the trip by any means, but this resort is far from perfect.

There are both positive and negative points about our visit to Fishermen's this year. We have been owners for seven years and this was the first time we experienced serious disappointment.

First, the positive:

The staff is wonderful. Every year we are so pleased to be greeted by Marcial, Bellman Extraordinaire! He is not only pleasant and always greets us by name, but he is a wealth of information and we'd far rather speak with him than one of the concierges. The activities staff, Gerardo and Ana, are a great team! They were always fun to be with and kept a busy activity schedule fun and engaging. We particularly appreciate the time on the catamaran with the two of them. Ana was especially gracious to our special needs daughter who thought she was her own personal playmate! We also really enjoyed the Mexican cooking times hosted by Ana. Chefs Lorenzo and Mario were great and engaging as they demonstrated making mole and crepes. Delicious! Ansalmo in the towel booth has been at Fishermen's for as long as we've been visiting and is always pleasant and helpful. Other than the occasional order from the snack bar, we did not eat at the restaurants. However, the wait staff was always smiling and pleasant. In particular, Victor Trinidad always wears a smile that can't help but brighten your day. He is a really nice, sincere young man that I hope can go places within the Sunset organization! One rainy evening we decided that a Mayan Coffee would be just the thing. The restaurant staff was already preparing the room for the following day's breakfast buffet but Benjamin obliged us and put on a fabulous display in the preparation of this tasty delight! Our rooms (a 2-bedroom master suite) were cleaned reasonably well, if not always timely, every day. Front desk staff were also helpful and friendly.

Another positive note was that the suites (at least the one we were in) had finally received a fresh coat of paint and the furniture had been reupholstered. The kitchens remain in need of a serious makeover.

Our disappointments:

Although the rooms had finally seen a coat of paint, the pool is in some serious need of repair. Of the 14 days we were there, the filtration system ran fewer than half of them and even then not as fully as necessary. The lower children's paddling pool has some very substantial cracks and is desperate need of repair. The other pools are all missing tiles and generally look like they've been neglected for far too long. Towards the end of our stay, all the pools were looking murky and dirty.

The only staff that we cannot say were pleasant and helpful were the concierge staff. They really are not concierges at all but assistants to the sales team. Their only role is talking you into meeting with a salesman and chasing you down to make sure you don't back out! On the few occasions we did approach them for assistance, it took a great deal of effort to pull them away from their cell phones or conversations with each other.

The reservation system is a nightmare! For peak travel times, you must make reservations 365 days in advance. However, if you a even a wee bit slow to the phone or computer, you will miss out. The weeks we wanted to book for 2015 were sold out within 30 minutes. Many guests could be heard complaining that, although they had done everything they were supposed to do, they had not been able to get in for their desired weeks.

We had an opportunity to speak with someone in upper Sunset management about our concerns and were assured that the problem areas were being addressed and that we would see a significant improvement when we return next year. We are hopeful this will be the case.

Room Tip: Room 229B is directly above the boiler so not great if you are not a deep sleeper. The rooms on the...

Specail kudos to Anselmo and Carmelo. they are always ready to help with any issue that arises during our frequent stays. Willie and Nanci keep the grounds immaculate. The bellman (Marcelo?) is always waiting to help us when we arrive and the team manning the front desk are most helpful
