The Reef Coco Beach
Ranked #103 of 217 Hotels in Playa del Carmen
Reviewed 1 September 2014

My girlfriend and I just returned from a week at The Reef Coco Beach and the stay was ok.

Arrival: Upon arriving they told us they did not have a room for us so they told us we'd have to stay in the "presidential" suite for the night and then move into a regular room the next day before noon. It was kind of annoying because my girlfriend and i wanted to get out and go places, not be stuck at the hotel until 12, also i believe it was just a ploy to try and get ust to upgrade to a more expensive suite. The "presidential suite" was very beautiful but we did not want to pay the extra money they were trying to get us to so we could stay there for the duration of our trip. After we got settled into our new room we walked down to the resort's beach.

Beach: The beach right on the resort was very dissapointing, for some reason the area of beach right in front of the resort is used as a parking garage for 20+ boats. The water is not clear due to all of the sand kicked up and there is barely any room to swim around. If you want to enjoy the Carribean water, walk down the beach away from the resort for about 10 minutes and the water will be a lot more clear and no boats!

Food: Included in the all-inclusive plan is the italian restaurant, the miramar which is the buffet cafeteria, and the snack bar. The mexican restaurant is not included and has a 6 dollar per person charge if you want to eat there. The italian restaurant was pretty good, the food quality definitely doesnt match the level of fanciness that the restaurant tries to portray but nonetheless it is still decent food and we ate there 3 out of 6 nights. Breakfast at the miramar is buffet style and was not bad either. I just got an omellete every morning which they make fresh right in front of you with ingredients of your choice so it wasn't bad.

Service: Service for the most part was pretty good. If you plan on going to the poolside bar at night, try and go when Andres is working. I went to the bar one night and it was a really fun experience thanks to Andres, he always made sure i had a drink and even went out of his way to get us shot glasses so that i could take a shot with some locals i befriended who were also vacationing at the resort. The italian restaurant service decent for most of the trip until the last two nights. We arrived to the resort on a monday and for the whole week it was not that crowded and we did not need to make reservations at the italian restaurant. Come Friday the restaurant was packed and we had to wait about 20 minutes to be seated. I didn't mind waiting but the service we received was poor. We were a bit confused as to why we were almost ignored for most of the night and felt like they didn't want us there. Granted we are a young couple of 20 and 21 years old but that is no reason to act like we didn't pay just as much as all of the older couples eating there as well. I was also upset with the treatment at the restaurant on the last day because we had tipped all week even though the all inclusive package says tips are included and we did not see one other couple tip at the restaurant.

Room: The regular room was pretty nice and cozy. The A/C always worked and the celing fan was kept on high the whole time to keep the room nice and cool. Overall we were really pleased with the room until the last day. On our last morning we were woken up at 6 in the morning by workers doing extremely loud construction LITERALLY right outside our room. Normally we probably wouldnt have been bothered by it since we woke up early every day to get out and explore Playa Del Carmen and nearby cities but on our last day we just wanted to sleep in. I understand that the construction needed to get done but why at 6 AM when you have guests sleeping? Also when we returned to our room after walking 5th avenue on our last day, the room smelled of rotten eggs like someone had thrown a stink bomb in the room. We presumed that it was due to the construction outside of our room but it was such a disgusting odor so we went and told the front desk and they said "they'd have someone spray our room." We were not really that upset due to it being our last day and all but just a little dissapointed with how bad things got at the resort when it got busy on Friday.

Overall it is a nice play to sleep and have dinner occasionaly but if you're looking for a resort to stay at for the entirety of your vacation and not go out a lot of days, this isn't the place for you. I probably would have rated it 4 stars but things just got so bad on the last days that it really affected our view of the place.

First let me say, our first two stays and this resort were great. Older hotel, typical fare, but great beach... in 2011... NEW ADDITIONS - NEW OWNER - BEACH RUINED - The addition of two piers directly in front of the hotel, eyesore. The pristine crystal water is now a strange milky color, not sure if this is due to the hotel stirring up the sand from bottom and pumping it onto the beach to create a larger beach, but it was almost nasty... even the sand in the miniscule roped off swimming area (another new addition between the piers) had a slimy silt feeling under your feet, much like swimming in a stagnant lake. Better to walk a ways down the beach for prettier water. The beach is what drew us there, the ability to swim out past the boats to snorkel the reef, something you cannot do in Playacar... but now the area has triple the number of boats and constant stream of wave runners, so swimming out to the reef is nearly impossible without the threat of having your head lopped off by one of the wave runners. A huge disappointment because we brought friends who had never been to Mexico and we had raved about this place... they were a bit disappointed in arriving at a Florida Beach.

Change number 2: Club next door... OK, it's Playa del Carmen... I get it, but the walls of the hotel are so thin, the club music ran until 3AM as if it were in my room... not a prude, just wanted to sleep.

Change 3: Aggressive Time Share pitch the minute you arrive... this is the first time this has happened, I assume this is due to the new owner, they are looking for investors for a new property. In doing so, they have set up VIP areas for VIP guests, creating a segregation between the haves and have nots, I will say the VIP areas were EMPTY our entire stay, and though we were in an upgrade room, we did not have access to these areas... oh well. The Upgraded room was also no different than the rooms I'stayed in in the past... could not see what the upgrade was? I was offered this upgrade because the King Bed Ocean View rooms we had booked were NOT AVAILABLE - frustrating,

Change 4: The Mexican restaurant NOT INCLUDED IN THE ALL INCLUSIVE - Hello, we are in MEXICO!!! Minimal charge of 6 bucks per person, so really, just the principle of the fact. If you are paying for dinner, you'll find better fare in town.

Over all, we once loved this little place that was out of the way and not at "trendy" as Playacar... but now it owned by the same owner as The Reef in Playacar, with the same feeling... impossible to just relax.. if you are looking for a beach, stay in Xpu-Ha instead.

Room Tip: Avoid the rooms with the ground floor walk out to the pool... this is the side closet to the night c...

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Reef Coco Beach. The staff were very friendly, the food was varied and of good quality and catered for a fussy teenage palate. The all inclusive drinks were of a good quality and the entertainment around the pool during the day and around the resort in the evenings was excellent. The excursions organised through the team on site were brilliant and we thought represented good value, whether sight-seeing or snorkelling. The beach was under reconstruction, which was interesting during our stay as the 2 piers were completed and sand was pumped onto the beach front to repair the damage caused by historic storm damage. Our adjoining rooms were excellent and the maid service was as we would expect. We would thoroughly recommend this resort, which is a pleasant 15 minute walk down the beach to the centre of Playa Del Carmen or a very cheap taxi in 5 minutes. Last recommendation: go into town for a meal though: our taxi driver recommended an excellent steakhouse on 5th Avenue where the surf and turf was amazing!

Room Tip: We overlooked the pool and the beach...perfect!

Like many of you my wife and I were a little scared coming in, boy were we wrong, let me begin by saying that in this same week we stayed 3 nights here and 2 nights in a more expensive hotel in cancun, this one was very peaceful and had party in the night lounge/bar area if you want it. If you are looking for a party you can make it anywhere you go like my wife and I do. We don't need nobody to make the party for us...This place has a sense of relaxation and calmness and at the same time you can eat all u want at the times posted and drink all u want according to what they do serve. It was very good. Romantic yes. As soon as we checked in we were received with champagne on hand, followed by some strawberry margaritas! the other more expensive hotel in cancun did not do this. Food Choice was good, this hotel did a good job at giving different options of food, we did not try the mexican dinner, but we did do the italian dinner, with lots of red wine. We followed this by going to the sports/lounge/bar next door, the music was to out liking, salsa and bachata! we danced right there and got the night rolling, it's amazing the effect 2 people can have on others causing others to follow and get into the music. Yes the beach is small, but we loved that feature about it, in cancun the beach waves of the most expensive hotel were almost drowning me, so pick carefully..The chill vibe at this hotel is right on, that is why i cannot give this place a bad review, this hotel is not trying to be a 5 star resort, it is excellent for what it is. I opted to not do the in room safe, instead i got my own luggage locks and split up my valuables between my wife's and my luggage placing them on high in the closet. No Issues whatsoever...They gave us a bottle of wine which traveled with us to H-Town!! On our first night they had the swan towel formations with rose petals on the bed and in the bath tub...IF THAT IS NOT ROMANTIC THEN WHAT IS!! This blew my wife away she was happy and delighted. The swim up bar is very laid back and cool, you can sit back and enjoy your stay here seriously...if you are looking to be right at the front door of the Nightlife then this is not for you..If you want crazy techno all in your ears then this place is not for you. I will return to do this place because the price and relaxation that one can have at the reef coco beach is wonderful...hope to see you again Reef Coco Beach!
-one little hiccup on arrival our door card reader was not working, we didn't care, we talked to the guys fixing it, and put our trust in them, we left all our belongings in the room, we just took our money and cameras with us and returned 4 hours later and it was working..sometimes you just have to trust people and go with the ocean flow, don't fight it! *nothing was missing from our room*

Room Tip: be nice to the hotel staff, say you are on your honeymoon!

I stayed at the Reef Coco Beach several years ago and decide to give it another try. The main reason was it's location. It is within walking distance to Playa Del Carmen.
The resort isn't large but well worth the price.
The staff was very friendly and helpful.
The rooms were very clean and well maintained.
There is a nice pool with plenty of lounges.
The food was average but can't complain.
If you are looking for a large beach this isn't the place for you. Very small swimming area.
Overall the resort was quiet and not loud music at the pool area.
I would return again for a quick get away.

Room Tip: all rooms have a balcony and somewhat of a view.
