“Destination Playa Maya!”
Reviewed 3 November 2009

Second time here; second fabulous stay!!
It doesn't get any better than this... ON the beach, breakfast served daily under a palapa, free wireless this time which was great, fabulous oceanview room (Thanks Steve!), super food & drinks served all day on the beach or poolside patio, & the BEST staff anywhere!!!!
We brought our daughter this time & she absolutely LOVED it!! I
I think we may have more pics of the towel art than anything as she had to photograph it daily!!
Here you can sit on the beach all day & do nothing or venture out and
come back to this peaceful setting. It's located close to shops,
restaurants, & night life, but far enough from the noise that you
can sleep at night.
Went on the Fat Cat Catamaran -HIGHLY recommend- an absolute
blast !!!
Also, "Hidden Worlds" is a great day out! They have cenotes you can
snorkle in; you can repel, do zip lines or sky cycle! (bug repellent
an absolute must here!)
Also went to the Mayan ruins in Tulum; very interesting but VERY hot
there- no shade at all.
Also met Delmy this time- very nice and personable!!.."Hope you had a safe trip back Delmy!!"
We have been to AI's & larger resorts, but much more enjoy the laid back
relaxed style & personal touches the Playa Maya and it's EXCELLENT staff offer! On behalf of ourselves, & especially our daughter Kaeli-
Hola to-
Raciel, Othman, Nora, Carlos, Lucio, Pablo, Sergio, Jesus, Juan, Alberto,
Aide, & Maria...You are THE BEST EVER!!!!
And a special "Hola and I miss you!" from Kaeli to Jesus! And from
Kaeli to Pablo, "Hola wopo and I miss you!" Lastly, from Kaeli, "I miss
you all!"
and she says it everyday, and never wanted to leave the Playa Maya!
Til the next time-Can't be soon enough!!!!
Randy, Flo & Kaeli Davis
P.S. I hope to see every single one of you next time I come!-
Love,Kaeli

Our friends have been coming to Playa Maya for years and finally got us to go with them two years ago. We've just booked our stay for the third year in a row. We prefer the personal attention you get over any of the larger hotels and the location couldn't be better. Steps from the sand and walking distance to all the great restaurants and shops. We prefer the Jacuzzi Suite if we can get it. After spending all day on the beach, the room is a perfect getaway from the sun and sand to rest, clean up and head back out. Having your own little garden atrium to sit in the jacuzzi, read or enjoy drinks with friends is unbeatable.

Can't say enough about the service and managment. For three years in a row now they have made booking our room a breeze. It feels like we go to visit old friends and we hate to leave. We start thinking about our plans to return as soon as we get home. We would do it more often if we could. Highly recommend it!!!

As frequent visitors to Playa del Carmen we have had several fantastic experiences with the Playa Maya. Its really great having such a relaxing, intimate and comfortable hotel on the beach in downtown Playa. Eating their great food with "toes in sand" on the beach just can't be beat!

I travelled with my 10 year old daughter. We very much enjoyed our stay at Playa Maya right on the beach. My first reaction was about how small the place is yet it's comfortable. The hotel is accessible only by the beach but staff is prompt to help with suitcases. My daughter loved to cool down in the tiny pool. We liked the outdoor design, modern and exotic. Our room was a good size and the a/c was easy to fine tune (we don't like it too cold or noisy).

We had difficulty accessing the Internet through wifi but were able to check email on a PC available in a sitting room. There were experimenting at the time, hopefully it works now and is not too onerous.

Staff was friendly although it seemed like there was some competition among restaurant staff over who had main access to customers (for tips or referrals?). A lot in Playa del Carmen has to do with referring tourists to attractions and one can sometimes feel the pressure. On the other hand it's nice when you get to have a friendly chat about places to visit.

I regret this type of hotel doesn't offer a formula that would include breakfast and a meal. Cost of meals are for us a big deterrent in traveling and food was not particularly cheap in Playa del Carmen. The only alternative would have been an "all inclusive" in Cancun which I wanted to avoid. We were looking for something more authentic with more ties with the local community. Some rooms offer a kitchenette which may help.

My big issue was that one person who cleaned our room had a really bad cold (seemed like flu) and could barely speak. I was sick a few days after I returned. Given that flu and Mexico made big headlines as early as May I would have expected the staff to have been trained adequately. Now I don't know if that has to do with poor local health coverage which would explain the necessity to work no matter what.

The bilingual (English/Spanish) staff was great with recommendations for restaurants, shopping and sightseeing (as well as reliable transportation choices). We wound up eating many meals at the hotel restaurant on the beach. Loved the breakfasts served on the beach! Though we had originally envisioned spending much of the trip out and about, we wound up spending two days of our four-day-stay enjoying the amenitites of the hotel, be they as simple as the hamock chairs on the deck overlooking the beach. Cozy indeed!

Based on previous reviews my husband and I decided to stay at Playa Maya on a recent trip to Mexico. Let me just start by thanking everyone for their recommendation.

Playa Maya is not the type of hotel we would normally consider for a vacation. We are usually at larger chain hotels. Not anymore! Everything about our stay was great. Every question we asked prior to arriving was quickly responded to by management and when we arrived, there were no surprises.

The location on the beach was great. Waking up each morning and having breakfast with our toes in the sand was really special. And after breakfast we would walk steps closer to the water to the beach chairs set up for guests.

We loved being able to walk up to 5th to enjoy all the restaurants and night spots and than returning to the quiet sanctuary of the hotel.

We can't recommend the hotel enough and we are already planning when we can make it back.
