Cleanliness is a top priority at this beach hotel. Quiet. Good value includes breakfast selections. The rooms are not elaborate but have everything you need plus flat screen TV & mini-refrig. We spent our days relaxing on the beach enjoying the service of the long-term friendly staff...delivering to us our orders of their delicious food and cold beverages. We've stayed here several times and we'll be back again.

I will start out by saying that this was our first trip to a non-AI after six visits to different AIs all over Mexico. Our main reason for the change was cost. As a teacher, I am pretty locked in when it comes to travel during the school year. That means I can go only at the peak times, like Christmas. When we started researching our trip, we found that AI prices at this time were sky high, so we decided to find a small hotel in the heart of Playa. We made a list of our must haves for a hotel, and then started at the top of TA’s list of hotels until we found the one with everything on our list. Playa Maya was the hotel we found, and wow, are we glad we did!

I have to repeat what all the other reviews have said. The staff is what makes this place special! Everyone from the front desk people to the waiters to the cleaning staff went out of the way to make our stay incredible. We had a slight problem with our toilet the first night. We called the front desk, and someone was in our room within 1 minute to fix it. That is service you don’t get at very many places! I think the people alone are the reason we will return. Even booking was a breeze with Steve. We ended up changing our reservation, and he directed to the room type that best met our needs. He really payed attention to what we wanted.

We had room 301, which is a superior balcony on the top floor. It was perfect. We had a great view of the beach, there was a small balcony to sit on, and we could listen to the waves in the evenings. We would have liked to sleep with the patio doors open, but music from some of the beach bars was a little loud. That’s okay, because it got pretty warm without the AC anyway. We thought the room was a nice size for our needs, and the bed and pillows were nice and comfy. The bottled water daily was really nice, and we like the fridge in the room too.

Breakfast on the beach was fantastic. As others have said, there is nothing like having your toes in the sand right away in the morning! The included breakfast was more than enough for us, and the variety kept us satisfied all seven days, so we never ventured off resort. We really liked being able to get up from breakfast, walk a few feet, and be at our beach chairs for the day. Drinks and lunch were great too. We ate lunch here five times, we had drinks daily, and our bill at the end of the week was under $150 US, which we thought was really reasonable. Their Miami Vices are fabulous, by the way! :-)

At night, we walked a block up the street to 5th Avenue, then meandered up and down side streets and the main drag. We never had a bad meal, although some stood out more than others. We loved El Bistro at La Tortuga, Bistro 524, and Carboncitos. We watched the Packers win at Tequila Barrel, the Badgers win at Bistro 524, and Minnesota lose at Carlos and Charlies and from the comfort of our balcony!

There is nothing about our trip that we would change, except to make it longer if we could! Thank you to everyone at Playa Maya for making our vacation special. We are already planning our return trip, this time with the kids. And we honestly don't know if we will ever go back to an AI again!

This is our second stay at Playa Maya in January. Everything remains fabulous!! Small boutique hotel -- intimate, clean, reasonably priced, free breakfast served in a palapa on the beach, free wireless, wonderful food (try the octopus tacos!) and drinks on the beach or poolside patio. But the BEST part of Playa Maya is the STAFF. From the maids, to waiters, to desk staff, to beach/bellboys, everyone is so friendly, helpful, and truly intent on serving the customers. At the end of the week, we feel like we are leaving family.

First off, let me say I wanted to stay at Playa Maya three years ago. I called and this popular place was already booked for the Christmas holiday season. Last February 2009, I contacted Steve to see about staying there. We lucked out and were able to get the Jr. Suite for myself and my husband and our 6 year old son. I had some original concerns about the reservation process since I couldn't contact Steve via phone. However, everything was done via email and it was very smooth. Steve took the time to answer my many questions.

This is not a hotel for those that prefer AI's and deluxe accomdations. The room accomdations are simple and not fancy. The rooms were extremely clean and every day the cleaning staff made sure to get out all the sand out of the rooms which isn't an easy job given that you enter from the beach to come and go. Also each day, we looked forward to see what towel art would be left on our bed. The only negative thing about the cleaning was that the air conditioning would be turned off each day when we got back to the room. This might be a common practice because the hotel is trying to save energy costs, however, after being in the hot sun all day on a tour or excursion it would take some time to get the room cooled down.

I found the Jr Suite to be perfect for a small family. We had a small kitchenette plus a bed near the kitchen for our 6 year old son. The only thing I wish we could have had in the room was a radio clock to be able to listen to some local music.

Also I found the bathroom counter to be a bit small. We ended up using the shelf in the closet for our toiletries. This is just a minor thng for us.

The location - perfect. One short block to 5th Avenue. We felt centrally located to everything. Also ths hotel area was extremely quiet. We aren't partiers and wanted to quiet hotel on the beach.

I can't say enough about the Playa Maya staff. They must really like their jobs and must be treated well by management. As a business owner, it is nice to see that everyone that we had contact with at Playa Maya was always in a good mood and went out of their way to help us with questions that we would have about the area.

We got stranded on Christmas Day in San Francisco and ended up arriving one day later due to our flight getting cancelled. And then the flight we took ended up being delayed by about 4 hours. By the time we arrived on Dec. 26th, our transportation company couldn't find Playa Maya and parked us a block away at 9:30pm. The staff of Playa Maya came out and helped haul our bags through 1 block of sand to our rooms. We don't travel light since my husband is a scuba diver!

The other thing we appreciate was coming into a complimentary first night refrigerator with several waters, some pops and some chocolate candy as a welcoming gift. We were also given a bottle of wine on New Year's Eve. It is those special touches that set Playa Maya apart from other hotels.

Thank you Aide for your wonderful hospitality and always being some friendly and helpful. Tell Steve he needs to give you a raise!

Also you can't beat the breakfasts that come with staying at Playa Maya. There is nothing like getting up in the morning and sitting at the beach with your toes in the sand and having yummy hotcakes/bacon and fresh orange or pineapple juice. It is a great way to start the morning.

I spent alot of time time reading reviews about Playa Maya on trip advisor and they are pretty much all on the money for this gem of a boutique hotel.

We found Playa Maya on the internet and it was a true gem. We are used to staying at more luxurious hotels but we found that this hotel, though not as fancy, had everything we wanted and more. We loved being right on the beach and eating breakfast under the thatched roof in the sand. Everything was very clean and the staff was extremely friendly and attentive. We enjoyed massages on the beach which were great! The location was wonderful. We would spend the morning on our beach chairs and then walk over to 5th avenue for lunch at an outdoor cafe. Then back to the beach chairs. It was wonderful. We will go back to stay at Playa Maya again.

Playa Maya's top attributes are cleanliness and simplicity. Rarely have I vacationed in Mexico and enjoyed such impeccable and attentive service. The staff is always available and willing to help in any way requested without being overbearing. While the rooms are in no way luxury they are above all sufficient and CLEAN and the location provides one of the absolute best locations on the beach in Playa to base your vacation. We thoroughly enjoyed the on-site, couples, beach massages for $50/hr/couple!!! We explored other hotels on the beach in Playa and could not find anything that appears to extend the same value as Playa Maya. A big thank you to Stephen and all of the staff. We will be back!!!

My husband and I just returned from a 7 night stay at Playa Maya yesturday. We found the hotel to be very simple but nice. The rooms were not huge by any means but they were plenty big enough for our needs. The room we stayed in #303 (superior oceanview) had a very small balcony with a nice oceanview. The neighbors bathroom window was on our balcony, kinda awkward but not too big of a deal. The one thing we thought the room was missing was a coffee pot. We like to get up early and sit and watch the sunrise from our balcony with a cup of coffee. We had to bring our own coffee pot which again wasnt too big of a deal but it would have been nice to just have one in our room.

The location of this hotel is awesome. It is literally steps from calle 8 and 1 block up is 5th Ave. Right along calle 8 there is a little mini mart and currency exchange which was nice. The beach at the hotel seems to change day to day. When we first arrived it was really rocky, then mid trip it seemed to rebuild itself, then by the end of our trip back to being very rocky. This was a concern we had because we saw it from other posters pictures but it was not a big deal at all though because just steps down was a nice sandy beach.

The staff at this hotel were really wonderful. They were all such nice people. They made us feel so welcome. Aide at the front desk was so sweet and Luicio one of the waiters on the beach did such an awesome job taking care of us on our trip. The free breakfast was very good, you could choose from eggs or pancakes with bacon or ham and it came with coffee or tea, juice and toast. The fish tacos and the chicken nachos were great for lunch. The frozen drinks were very good as well.

Overall I would say if you are looking for a simple, clean, budget friendly hotel with a great beach location than this would be a good choice for you.
