This is a very pleasant small, boutique hotel for those of you who can create your own pastimes and entertainment. The room/furnishings are minimal but that should not be viewed as a negative comment. We had the "treetop" bungalow, with a patio/balcony almost as large as the room. It was complete with hammock, cocktail table, and chairs. We spent early evenings (before dinner) with our traveling companions on the balcony playing cards and drinking margaritas, after a day at the beach club (courtesy of Luna Blue). The hosts/owners were very nice and accomodating, fun to meet and talk with. Wish them the best with their new venture!!

We enjoyed our stay at Luna Blue. Location, location!!! It is located in a perfect spot; close to everything a traveler needs. Across the street you have a mini-mart, laundry service, great Spanish restauraunt and the famous 5th ave right on the corner.

The staff and owners at the Luna Blue were great. Our AC started to give-up one evening. Toni(owner) was in our room within 10 minutes and after deciding he had to call someone to fix it the next morning, he offered the another room for the night. We slept well and our AC was up and running the next day.

We look forward to staying at Luna Blue again!!!

We stayed at Luna Blue for 7 nights, from June 9 through June 16. Prior to our making reservations at Luna Blue, I did extensive research on the hotel and the surrounding area, including reading every TripAdvisor review. In summary, we had a great time and the hotel was exactly what we expected.

Before beginning this review, I again read every TripAdvisor review of the hotel with a Terrible (one star) or poor (two star) rating. With actual experience behind us, I wanted to attempt to understand why some reviewers would give the hotel such poor ratings. But, since our experience was unlike any of their stated experiences, my arriving at any definitive conclusions has proved to be difficult. My opinion (and it's only an opinion) is that they made assumptions because of a lack of research, and those assumptions proved to be incorrect.

We were searching for a small, clean, reasonably quiet, reasonably priced hotel on or near 5th Avenue. Luna Blue met every one of these requirements and then some. We requested and received a Tropical Hideaway room and my wife's sister and her husband were in a Treetop Terrace room. Both rooms were exceptionally clean, with ceiling fans and air conditioners that cranked out COLD air, chests of drawers for our clothing, large bottles of purified water, and showers with ample hot water. We didn't have any odors or bugs in our rooms and each room had a balcony/terrace that overlooked the beautiful courtyard.

When we arrived on a Tuesday, check-in was fast and efficient and the young man behind the desk was kind enough to carry our luggage up to our room, which was on the 2nd floor. I have some mobility issues and it would have been very difficult for me to get the luggage up there. We felt as if we had been there before because the photos on their web site are an exact match for the courtyard, bar, and rooms.

After dropping our luggage in the rooms, we left the hotel to take a turn around the lively end of 5th Avenue. This took up most of the afternoon and, when we returned to the hotel, Jorge was already behind the bar. Of course, we had to stop and meet him and sample some of his too-strong (they really are) drinks. When we asked for a restaurant recommendation, he said that the little (and I do mean little) Spanish place across the street not only had very good food, they'd also deliver it to the bar. Jorge walked across the street and perused the menu, then came back and informed us of the specials, but he also said they'd cook anything we wanted. The meals averaged 75 pesos ($6 USD) and they were filling and delicious. In fact, the place made such a hit with us, we had our dinners at the Luna Blue bar 4 nights out of the 7 nights we were there. Jorge just added the cost of the meals to our bar tab and we'd pay him at the end of the night. Now, I know that some folks are probably wondering why we'd spend the majority of our evenings in Playa del Carmen at the hotel bar. We did our sightseeing and traveling during the day. A quiet evening at the bar, having a good meal and a few drinks, and conversing with Jorge, other hotel guests, and regulars who'd drop in for a drink, was an ideal way to spend our evenings.

After eating our meal and after having a few more drinks, Jorge told us that Tuesdays and Fridays are music nights. So, we hung around the bar until Brad, Danny, and he-whose-name-I-can't-remember (two guitars and a sax) arrived and started playing. What a pleasant surprise! They were talented and they could play almost any type of music. Tony and Cheri showed up, so we had an opportunity to meet them. One of the things that impressed me about Tony was his concern for the noise level of the music. He went out in the street a number of times, to listen to the music out there and to insure that it wasn’t loud enough to disturb the neighbors. The restaurants and clubs down the block didn't seem to share his concern.

We were tired from traveling all day, so we didn't make it to the end of the show. We headed up to our room about 9:30 or so and, after showering, we laid in bed and talked about how nice it was to be able to lie there and listen to the music as we drifted off to sleep.

This was sort of a working vacation for me, and it was imperative that I be able to send and receive emails on my laptop. I had some difficulty in getting my laptop configured properly, so Cheri made a special trip from their home one evening, to assist me. With her help, I was able to get the job done and I was a happy camper. She also took care of renting a car for us on the day that we went to Akumal bay and arranged for the rental company to deliver the car to the hotel and to pick it up when we returned. She and Tony seemed to be available whenever we needed them and they were always cordial and willing to help. I don’t know what more could be expected of hotel owners.

We spent one day at the Mamita Beach Club and one day at the Blue Cacao Beach Club. Neither was very crowded, but Blue Cacao was definitely our favorite. It's about 20 minutes away by taxi and well worth the 100 peso taxi ride. When we were there, all 10 guests (including the four of us) were staying at Luna Blue. It was peaceful and secluded, with an incredible beach. We thought it was a wonderful perk for such a small hotel.

The hotel staff, including housekeeping, was friendly and efficient and was never intrusive. They were there when we needed them. Otherwise, they more or less stayed out of the way.

So, let me see if I can sum it up……A lovely hotel with a great bar, located in a wonderful, quiet area just off 5th Avenue, with clean rooms that were an excellent value, a friendly staff, and friendly, helpful owners.

Will we be back? Of course we will!

We spent two nights at Luna Blue before heading off to our Royal Haciendas timeshare, and were impressed with the value you get at Luna Blue. Room was extremely clean, great a/c, shower was great, everything functioned well. Front desk was extremely friendly, made a couple of restaurant recommendations, atm location (Scotiabank), got the taxis quickly. Best of all, Tony/Cheri's restaurant recommendations from their great blog were the best!! We tried a number of their recommendations and can say without a doubt, that the recommendations were excellent. We ate at Vagabonda for breakfast, Mamitas Beach Club--lunch, and dinners at El Fogon, La route des Vins, Antica, El 10, and El Cuevo del Chango. All worth the walk...when we're back in January we'll be trying others. Great job, well done, and thanks to a great staff!

My husband and I stayed at the Luna Blue a couple of weeks ago. Cheri and Tony were very gracious hosts. They made several excellent recommendations for both outings and food. The staff was excellent and friendly.

Our room was the tree top terrace. It was very secluded, very clean, and exactly what we wanted for our stay. The location of the hotel was right off Fifth Avenue and just a couple of blocks from Mamita's Beach Club. We enjoyed both Mamita's and the Blucacao beach clubs.

We definitely recommend the Luna Blue and would absolutely stay again!!

We were immediately upgraded due to the low occupancy, so got a bigger room with a large kitchen and extra single bed. Room was clean and functional--we had a little construction noise (which may be temporary) from next door which started promptly at 8am every morning--so we didn't need an alarm clock!
Outdoor area was a tropical paradise; waterfall, adirondack chairs. tall trees and foliage.
Staff was attentive and friendly--Jorge at the bar was a hoot!
In addition to passes for Mamita's Beach Club (which is about four blocks away) , they had complimentary access to another beach club about 7-10 minutes north of Playa called the Blue Curacao which is pretty spectacular--wide, quiet beach, big deck with pool, full bar and restaurant. We had a rental car which made it easy--some other folks cabbed over and thought it well worth the ride.
The location is close to Quinta without being right on it-so you can quickly access the restaurants or clubs you're looking for without any hassles.
They had live music at the bar the last night we were there--a very talented singer -songwriter named Brad Ryan?...very fun gig!

We absolutely loved the Luna. We stayed there from June 1st through June 11th and had the best time. We loved the easy access to the beach club and also to 5th Avenue. It was the perfect location and we felt like we were in a home away from home.
Jorge was the best bartender. I told Tony that Jorge was trouble, but think that he had to laugh at us when he saw us perched at the bar a little later that night.
We were lucky enough to be at the Luna when they hosted the benefit for the cat rescue. It was a great fundraiser, and you could see that they liked to host these events to help out their community.
We asked Cheri for recommendations for our last night in Playa, and she suggested Babe's Noodle Bar. Awesome recommendation--we opted for her favorite dish--the red curry shrimp. We definitely loved it and wished we would have tried it sooner. (Thanks, Cheri!)
We will definitely be back next June and will request our treetop room (#9). We celebrated our 5th anniversary, and it was the best place for this celebration.
