We've been to Playa del Carmen a few times, and every time we find more to love.

On this trip we loved every minute of our 10 day stay at the Luna Blue Hotel:
Charming, clean, comfortable, functional room with fridge and water dispenser.
Quiet upper balcony with thatched roof overlooking the beautiful gardens was the perfect start and end to each day.
Owners and staff are very friendly and helpful.
Wonderful neighborhood, convenient location for exploring Playa del Carmen.
Oxxo on the corner, numerous dining options for any budget within strolling distance.
Easy walk to everything: Mega, collectivos, ferry, all the beaches - central or N end.

Beach Clubs: we used their passes a few times for Mamitas and Blue Cacao.
Mamitas - busy, fun, convenient.
Blue Cacao - quiet and relaxing, great service. We loved the walk to and from along the beach (approx 40 min leisurely stroll).
Other beaches:
Central beach: Lunch at Wicky's and the afternoon at the beach club (free use of their chairs)
Collectivo to Akumal Beach
Collectivo to Tulum, then taxi to El Paraiso Beach - this is beach lover's heaven.

The Luna Blue website is very representative of what type of accommodation they provide, and for us, it was perfect! We spent many mornings exploring the neighborhoods and beaches in Playa del Carmen, and the Luna Blue Hotel is a great location for wanderers! Enjoy!!!

This was a pretty Basic hotel. It didn't have many of the things we are used in an hotel room, like a TV. But honestly, being in Playa del Carmen, Who needs a TV set on the room, when you can go out and enjoy the beach.

My boyfriend and I just returned from our first trip to Playa, and we stayed at the Luna Blue on the recommendation of my sister and brother in law, who were traveling with us and had stayed in this little slice of paradise before. They had promised us for months that no amount of pics and talking could really make us understand the charm of Luna Blue, and they were right. We spent a week, and we felt like we were home within the first minutes of stepping through the gate.

The wonderful staff at the desk (and I feel awful for forgetting his name!), greeted our taxis when we pulled up, and helped us with a quick check in and getting our luggage upstairs (that we brought way too much of! Thanks guys!). We stayed in room 9, the Treetop room and were immediately smiling when we saw the place. Bright colours, spotless, full water jug and a stunning view of the gardens (with real coconuts in the tree right off the balcony!). We had a full bath, complete with a huge tub where you could look out at the Caribbean sky while showering, yet had total privacy. The room was kept very clean and fresh the entire time, by the friendly cleaning staff that went about their jobs quietly (a problem we've had at lots of other places is housekeeping staff making a lot of noise in the wee hours). I saw maybe 2 ants the entire week and not a single flying critter...pretty good for a tiny jungle! Our bed was very comfy, and for what was supposed to be a smaller room, it was plenty big for the two of us.

The front desk staff was great, and helped us with transportation and taught us what taxis should cost us, supplied us with fresh beach towels and helped us with our Spanish...always with a great attitude and a smile. Cheri told us about a great snorkeling spot that, in spite of all our research, had never heard of...and we were blown away! Her and Tony are great hosts! We were greeted and treated like family.

And then there's the famous (infamous?) Jorge and the Luna Blue Bar. What can I say...sitting on a swing in that place, sipping a Sarita B Careful, listening to Jimmy Buffett quietly in the background while visiting with new and not so new friends was paradise in and of itself. We were fortunate enough to be there on a night where Mike Grabrow was performing, and had the time of our lives! A party that I'm sure won't be forgotten by anyone in attendance for a long time! But lest anyone be worried about the revelry going on too late...true to their words, we shut it down around 11ish and transformed back to a quiet little jungle. Jorge makes sure that everyone is happy and loving life as much as he does.

We felt safe and totally taken care of during our stay. Gates are locked at night, with only guests having a key to the little "mouse door" to come in late and leave early. We would get up early, take a quick walk to Starbucks (yeah, I know. There's better coffee to be had. What can I say? I'm an addict.) and sit in the garden in the morning, planning our day and updating our Facebook pages to drive all our cold friends back home insane. The gorgeous beach is only a short walk away, and the Mamitas passes were well used during our trip (and it's a very cool beach club, btw....we loved it and we tried a lot of different ones during our stay!). 5th Ave is a block away fro shopping and great food and bars. There are only two things I would alert other folks about. There is some construction going on next door, but they seem to start pretty late (like after 9 or so). We only heard them once, when we had slept in (probably the day after the Mike Grabow concert), so you may wish to bring earplugs if you sleep late. We never did hear the construction while we were in the garden. It's just a part of PDC life right now. Also, as awesome as our room was, I wouldn't recommend it for anyone with mobility issues. See, it's the Treetop Room...meaning it's up high, above the trees. That last flight of stairs was a beast some nights, seeing as we are actually older than we think we are. But there are plenty of ground level rooms that we can't wait to try next time!

All in all...I would say we liked it. :-) Tony and Cheri have a great, simple little place that allows you to rediscover yourself. You may not have a 5 star buffet at your beck and call...but your soul will be fed. And in my opinion, that's the most important meal. We will be back soon!

After a very long day of travel my wife and I were both relieved and excited when we finally reached Luna Blue. As we approached the front desk, Hieme slowly got up front the back room and made his way to us. After a moment of looking at us, he asked "Yes??" As if two people coming in off the street with suitcases wasn't a tip-off. A simple Hello, or Hola, or maybe even a Welcome would have gone a long way. I told him we were here to check in and he proceeded to find our keys and show us our room in a very uninterested manner.

I thought maybe he was having a bad night and gave him the benefit of doubt. The next day and basically the whole week was more of the same. In general the staff seemed kind of burnt out and it felt like you were bugging them to ask a question or get your beach passes. The one rare time when the owner Tony was around, Hiemi perked up a little and made some dinner recommendations.

The maid service was very nice and kept the rooms very clean. We also thought Mike was fun and his live music was good. Also, Rick and his dog Lenny were great.

In general we liked the place and would even like to come back if the vibe from the staff improved. This is a quote from a Luna Blue email correspondence:

"We are American owned and family operated. As the on-site owners, we and our staff personally see to your comfort and enjoyment, providing a level of service and care that is not found in larger hotels. We also love to assist newcomers in the adventure of exploring Playa del Carmen with its many varied and interesting activities, restaurants, clubs and bars. We can tell you where the best tamales, burgers and steaks can be had for a song. "

I guess we just didn't see this at all.

Thank you for your comments. We and our staff pride ourselves on our friendly service and regret that you found it otherwise. We have had a meeting of all our employees to discuss your review and see how we might better serve our guests in the future. We do try to insure our staff is friendly and helpful and do our best to be available to our guests as much as possible. The two of us work regular shifts a couple of times each week as receptionists, both in the morning and in the evening, just so we can get to know the people staying with us. At least one of us, if not both of us, work at the hotel every day. And even when we are not present in the hotel, our staff is directed to call us if a guest needs to speak to us. It is not unusual for us to receive telephone calls from the hotel in the evening from guests seeking advice. We are always glad to help.

Unfortunately it would seem that your path and ours just didn’t cross while you were at the hotel, and we feel bad about that. Of course we do try and avoid being too forward with our guests. Some people prefer to be left alone so they can enjoy the vacation they planned. In that case we offer them privacy. Others prefer to chat with us and the staff, getting ideas and recommendations about the area. For those folks we are always glad to talk when asked. Our goal is to remain available without being pushy. It appears in your case we failed to find the right level of contact and we regret that. We hope you will return so that we might try and do better for you in the future.
