Oh my, you need to stop by Ay Chabela! Delicious, authentic Mexican Caribbean food a block off the beach in the midst of the tourist district. Who'd know? These folks have lived in Playa for a lifetime; they aren't transplants or tourist-entrepreneurs. The food is inexpensive, healthy and delicious. The locals and the lucky travelers eat here.

Don't be fooled... It's a locals place and it is delicious. Its on the edge of the 'tourist' area. We had breakfast there everyday, had something different each time, and it was delicious. 9 different choices that were simple and authentic Mexican. Eggs on tortilla shells with refried beans and fried bananas - #9 is great. #1 is the American breakfast and #8 is your choice of omelette. Everything is cooked fresh while you wait (be patient) with fresh squeezed OJ. All for 60 pesos, about $5. Delicious!!!

This place is nondescript, off the beaten path, next to a dive shop and across from one of the world's gaudiest billboards - a place you tend to walk past on your way to the beach. It looks like a place for the locals, and it is - all the more reason to try it.

There's a daily lunch special for 75 pesos - about $6 U.S. That would be a pretty good price all by itself, even if it didn't include a bottle of beer, which it does. The day we ate, the lunch special was fish in garlic butter sauce. Can't tell what kind of fish it was - our knowledge of Spanish isn't that extensive, and their knowledge of English is even less. But it was absolutely delicious, and we ate every last morsel.

While we were waiting for our meal, we stepped up to the foosball table, and tried to teach each other humility. Fun. There are also two video screens, almost always tuned to either soccer matches or Mexican soap operas.

The service was friendly, and they were most appreciative of our visit. Highly recommend, especially if you're on a budget.
