We are a group of five that booked a private tour with Travel Ahead to see Chichen Itza and we were so happy we did this!! We have done tours on previous visits to Mexico that have varied in size, from the big buses that hold 70 people to vans that hold 12. This was the first time we've been on a tour that consisted of our group only and it was a fabulous day!
We were picked up at our resort December 26th, 2013 by our driver, Carlos and tour guide, Gabriel (Gabe). They were both very professional and lots of fun too. Our transportation was a new Chevy Suburban that was very comfortable for the lengthy drive to the site and back. Gabe provided lots of information to us on the way, then we stopped for a stretch at a souvenir shop before getting to Chichen Itza. Once we arrived and parked we proceeded to the entrance where Gabe obtained our tickets to get in. He then took us on a tour of this incredible place where he shared his knowledge. Words can't describe the amazement you feel when you see what the Mayans created there. It truly is a magical place! After we toured around, Gabe gave us some time to explore on our own and check out all the items being sold there. It was almost overwhelming at times having someone constantly trying to sell you their items but a polite "no gracias" and you were left alone. We were lucky that it was a bit cloudy this day - made it quite tolerable to walk around.
As we were attempting to leave, the place was filling up with lots of big tour buses that were just arriving. So glad we missed those crowds and got there as early as we did! From there we proceeded to Ik-kil cenote. This cenote is absolutely stunning! Refreshing is one way to describe it... Once we were done swimming we then went and had a buffet lunch at the restaurant there. Good variety and good flavor. When we were finished we met back up with Gabe and Carlos and headed to Valladolid for a look around. We were able to go into the chapel, which was really beautiful. Looked around the square and then headed back to the resort. We were picked up at 8:30 and dropped off at 6 which was just the right amount of time. It was a very full day but it was great not having to pick up and drop off at other resorts.
All five of us agreed that it was very likely one of the best tours we've ever done! It was one we always put off doing as being on a bus for 6 hours was a big deterrent. We are extremely happy with how the whole day went! Big thanks to Gustavo Carvalho for arranging the day and ensuring all details were communicated to us, and taken care of. We will definitely book through Travel Ahead again!
