This restaurant is small, but wonderful. The food has incredible flavor. We had a portobello stuffed with another mushroom and goat cheese, salad of chopped lettuce, avocado, and goat cheese, tuna with a special crust and sauce. The tuna melted in the mouth. This will be an annual must.

“Extraordinary food, exquisite presentation, excellent service!”
Reviewed 12 April 2014

The food is described as contemporary Mexican. The name roughly translates to "culture without borders". The restaurant is almost at the end of the 5th ave but don't let that discourage you. After all the irrestible food that made all of us over eat, we were happy to have a bit of a walk back! We ordered the cones (4 different stuffing including avocado-grasshopper) and the tacos (duck and pork) for starters. The presentation was creative and delightful! The chef also sent complimentary small servings of a tomatoe bisque like warm soup which was delicious and some round shaped bread, one of which had hibiscus, which was also very good. We ordered the shrimp pappardelle, cheese ravioli, rib eye steak, tuna with pepper sauce, flank steak with grasshopper sauce, a chicken dish and a vegetarian dish (vegetable lasagna without pasta, green couscous, busses sprouts). Everyone loved their entrees! The molten mole and guava flan we shared for dessert we both utterly delicious. The service was very attentive and personable. All in all a fantastic meal!

“New and really different”
Reviewed 9 April 2014

We tried this place based on the good reviews. All of them were correct! This is and unusual restaurant, I'm not quite sure how to categorize it...maybe fusion. we samples most of the appetizers. The "cones" were difficult to share as they were small and fragile, but we LOVED every bite (even the grasshopper guacamole which inspired us to buy an oxacan grasshopper ornament). Every entre showed attention to complimentary flavors. Cost was lower than we expected for an upscale place.

“Great food and service!”
Reviewed 3 April 2014 via mobile

Service in this place was spectacular! Very friendly, all dishes duly and passionately explained, some complimentary spoils...

The food was excelent, unlike anything I had eaten before. It's sophisticated Mexican food using tradition to create some really nice twists.

I had the pumpking shrimp tempura and the corn smut (very interesting!) for apetizers and the ravioli for entree. Impecable presentation, great taste.

Price was very reasonable as well, great value for money.

American express notwithstanding, they accept Credit Cards.

Don't miss the opportunity to try something very unique at this great place!

“A unique palate experience”
Reviewed 30 March 2014

I had been looking forward to going to this place, so I was psyched when my visiting friend suggested we have his last meal at Mestizaje. We had two fruit-based alcoholic drinks (I had the yummy Guanábana [soursop] drink), the avocado and goat cheese salad, the deep-fried veggie wonton-like appetizer, and the pappardelle and shrimp entree. All were tasty and worth a repeat, but the pappardelle caught my attention unlike any meal in recent memory. It was this unique-tasting blend of spices in a dark squid-colored sauce (but it wasn't squid). I have no words to describe the taste of the sauce, but I've not tasted anything like it, ever. I want it again! In the case of Mestizaje, there are two bottom lines: (1) "does it live up to tripadvisor's #2 restaurant (as 3/30/14) of Playa?" Perhaps (arguably) not #2, but definitely top 5% and worth the trip and value (by US standards); (2) Will I come back again? Yes. And you, the reader, should try it too.
