Our group of 8 family and friends collected at The Royal from September 22nd to 29th. For 3 of us it was our sixth trip there. As soon as we stepped from the mini van that had transported us from the airport, we were greeted by Hector (head bellman) who welcomed us back to "our home away from home". As soon as we were shown the room, which was really superb I have to say we ambled down to Spice for a bite to eat as we were all pretty hungry after the flight down. The fare at Spice is wide ranging and everyone can usually find something that they like to eat.' To order' coooking was never a problem either. Talk to the chefs. They are really pleasant. We broke our time up between Spice and El Mediterraneo for the majority of our meals. There are several staff in both establishments that bear special mention as they went above and beyond each and every time we were in either establishment. First of all I have to mention Jose who was maitre d at Spice is just incredible. He is really attentive and friendly. Not to forget Adan, Jorge, David and Luis also from Spice. Male and Charley from Spice were also really good. In El Mediterraneo it was Paco who was truly outstanding. We miss all of you keeping our coffee cups full ! Can't wait to come back and see you ! Our housekeeper was Maria Pech and our room was spotless. Indeed the entire resort is one of the tidiest that we have ever seen. Everywhere you turn there is someone cleaning something. We tended to use the lobby bar area as our prime meeting spot (as usual) and have noticed some changes to the general area (the moving of the bar to the unused space above Maria Maries and the closing of the sales center and moving it and putting pool table in its place) which are a great idea but I hope that something is done soon to try and minimize the unbelieveable sound that echos around the cavernous ceiling during their shows. The shows are fair to pretty entertaining. The Elements show being one of the best. However we have been seeing them for six years now and have made the same comments each time. They are really really loud when the sound systems are on and there is nothing to absorb any of the noise . A good idea would be to install some tapestries or something on the upper level to absorb some sound. Also the lobby furniture is getting a little tired and truly some of the chairs are really in need of repair. Otherwise, it is a realy pleasant area to sit and have a drink and catch up on your day before heading to dinner or something else.Oscar Reyes sits quietly at the rear of the lobby area in the evening rolling cigars. Drop by his desk and say hi and give yourself a treat . They are often nicer than what you pay big bucks for on 5th Ave. There were a few wait staff both in the Lobby area as well as ocean side and pool side that worked very hard and were pretty quick to get refreshments to us although we have noted a decline in the number of staff. Those who really caught our attention were Prude was so sweet and charming. Yoli , One, Mary, Sylvia, Ale and Daisy all worked really hard and were very pleasant to chit chat with. We have noticed though that there has been a decline in the number of staff and some had to wait a while before being served. But once seen the service was fantastic as always. We will have to come back and try one of the new swim up suites we saw them builidng. They look like they will be fantastic. The coffe shop on site was nice . The coffee I had was amazing with a tequila and cinnamon flavour. Really really good, Not sure what it was. Ask Oscar the great server who made it for me. Did not get to eat at Maria Maries this time around so we have to go back just for that. We DID however get to eat at The Chefs Plate which is an astounding culinary experience. A different set menu each and every night. It is an 7 or 8 course meal and worth trying. Nava was our server there and he was a great server,The Chefs were outstanding. Customer service continues to be the driving force behind this hotel and we do look forward to coming back again despite the difficulties that we had with the Lapis Factory which I intend to discuss in more detail in a separate review as I do not with to sully this fine hotel with what I believe to be at the very least a very annoying experience and at the most questionable in both ethics as well as quality. More on that however in Review of The Lapis Factory. Still continue to recommend this hotel to honey mooners. Couples looking to relax. Small groups of family and friends. Not recommended for those with children as no one under 16 is allowed.

The Royal experience is always amazing,We just got back Sept 19th 2012 ,had been there Sept 2010. Decided to go back as we thought it was a 5 star plus, Don't pay attention to the bad reviews as some people always complain. We are planning trip 3 in April 2013..So for 2 people that travel alot and have been to Brand new Sandals resort, would recomend this any day. The food the property and the service is amazing. You do not have to make reservations at any restaurants, just go when your ready. When you go to Maria Marias try to get the waiter Matteo if you get him,you will fall in love with his service and sweetness he goes above to make everyone happy. And when your lying by the pool Vicky will be on top of every drink and even stop by in between and bring you water she is a hard worker and always there to serve and please you with a big smile on her face. The pelicanos restaurant on the beach is where we ate every morning and most lunchs the food is delicious the presentation is amazing.
There are buffets for breakfast and lunch But I would rather eat there and order from the menu.Reuben works there and he is always on top of everything very hard worker with a sweet smile. The pools are amazing the lobby has the best shows Ive ever seen anywhere, its like Vegas :) Every night there is something else going on.Don't miss them you would be missing great entertainment. The lobby has a new bar off to the side its great with great service. The beach is incredible except not right in front just walk down a wee bit to the buoys ,there aren't any rocks there. Everything is top notch the rooms are awesome the double jaccuzies are great.I could go on and on you just have to try it,across the street you can eat at the italian its incl and its so delicious and the mexican they are both just a walk across don't miss out on them or the Asiana. I hope I didn't forget anything just give it a try ,you will want to return:)

Room Tip: The rooms on the 3rd floor and up seem quiet on the side not facing the pools..

This hotel is located in the prime location.....right out the door is 5th Ave of Playa del Carmen....the best little town! Loved being able to walk out the door and be right in the heart of the city. Playa del Carmen's 5th Ave. is all shopping and restaurants and entertainment. Walk down the middle of the streets at all hours and enjoy the Mexico experience without having to call a cab or feel unsafe. If you walk out the hotel and make a left on the Avenue, there is an amazing little pizza place which we ate at every day. They serve you a piece of fresh pizza, on a napkin and it is amazing and you can grab a beer out of the fridge. As for the hotel, we loved it. The decor is wonderful and service and food were all amazing. You will have to walk a bit if you room is close to the lobby, in order to get to the beach, but that will help you work off all the food you will be eating. :) We split our vacation of 10 days between the Royal Cancun and Royal Playa del Carmen and that was PERFECT!! The Royal in Cancun is also just as amazing and I don't know which one I liked better. If you end your vacation at the Royal in Cancun, you are only about 15 minutes from the airport and all the rooms have an ocean/pool view at the Cancun resort. Loved this vacation at both Royals and would highly recommend both of them!!! Do your waiters/waitresses a favor (because they deserve it) and tip them with American Dollars. You don't have to tip all the time, but they deserve it and you will get even better service. We always take $100 in singles with us. Also, April (after Easter) travel to Mexico is the perfect time to go!! Thank you Royal Staff....we had an amazing vacation!!!

Room Tip: If you want to see the ocean, get an ocean FRONT room, not an ocean view. The ocean view rooms just...

You can't beat the service here. We were treated like kings and queens just like the 2 past times. The rooms are great, we did the swim up room and loved it. Many complain that it's not private, how do you figure? You have 2 curtians to cover the glass door and do "what ever you want" in the room. No problems here. It's clean and very friendly at every turn. Every bus and tour guide said we were in one of the best resorts and we agree. If you see a poor review on this place you found a complainer for everything. If you can't enjoy it here you can't enjoy it any where. Some people you can't make happy, but I saw hundreds of very happy people last week at The Royal!
The food is great, much better than the run of the mill resort. Room service was awesome and we used it most mornings for coffee and memosas.

Room Tip: We love the ocean front rooms, but most are ocen front anyway.

This resort is literally heaven on Earth. It was BEAUTIFUL. This was my 5th all-inclusive resort I have been to and it blew the rest of them away. Nothing even compares. I went with my best friend and her family and it was her parents' 2nd time staying at the resort. They said it is by far their favourite. I can't even think of one bad thing to say about the place. All the staff are super friendly. The food is amazing! I am the pickiest eater you can imagine and I still found something I loved every single day. The 24hr room service is definitely a bonus too. The resort is spotless. Even the beach was so clean. We spent most of our time by the pool. There is always music playing, swim up bar, water aerobics, crazy games. Make sure you go early and put towels out though or else you won't get a chair. There are ever waiters that walk around the pool all day and ask if you'd like a drink from the bar. Prudy was the cutest!! The entertainment staff definitely made our trip more enjoyable. They're so much fun, always smiling and chatting people up. Ceasar, Danny, Omar, Katie, Teresa and ESPECIALLY Renato. You guys are awesome!! Thank you guys so much for making our trip so enjoyable and fun. I also highly recommend you check out Coco Bongo one night. It's crazy!! Make sure you go with the hotel though because you get better service and spots inside. So worth the money, so much fun.

I definitely recommend this place to everyone. I could not of asked for anything better! I want to go back already.

Room Tip: The rooms on the first floor are more convenient

My boyfriend and I went Sept 14,2012 - Sept 22,2012. The weather was beautiful! However, that was the only nice thing about this place. We arrived at the resort- no welcome towels, or welcome drink like they show on all the ads. Sat down to meet with the concierge Licia Marchetti, to find out our room was on the side where they were doing construction. She advised us they can upgrade us- if we wanted to spend an additional $60 a night, or an additional $ 150 for the presidential suite with a kitchen. She also advised light construction. It wasn't light construction, they were bulldozing to make more pools. We finally got our room sorted out, because another couple decided to pay the upgrade fee. We went to meet with our representatives from Travel Impressions, Arturo, and Charlie- and they were useless. They were supposed to be our reps. if we needed anything or had any issues, and all they wanted to do was sell us tours. - And they kept pushing one tour, that wasn't even going out anymore. The food was ok at all the the restaurants. But the nightly entertainment was lacking. I will say though, their were a few employees there, who did make the trip really nice. They were - Danny Boy ( Entertainment) Prude ( Cocktail waitress at pool) Daisy ( cocktail waitress at pool) and Theresa ( Entertainment). This is a resorts that we will not ever recommend, or come back to.

Room Tip: Make sure there is no construction going on. Light construction to them means bulldozing at 7am, and...

The hotel itself was fantastic and in a great location being on the beach and just off the main shopping street. Well located for excursions and trips out and only 45mins from Cancun and the airport.

the facilities in the hotel were first class and every member of staff were brilliant

All the restaraunts and food were amazing, in particular Maria Marie which was French/Mexican fusion food and Asiana which was oriental food.

We had a junior suite which had a huge bed and a jacuzzi in the room next to the bed. There is a separate double shower room. athere is also a drinks fridge and optics in the room that are topped up daily.

There is a large pool with plenty of sun loungers which gets quite busy. There is also a smaller pool which is usually much quieter if thats what you're after.

The only downside was the hard sell we went through by some of the reps from the Real Club. On arrival you are asked if you want to attend a lunch and talk about becoming a member. We were told that it was'nt hard sales and if we were'nt interested there would be no problem. Unfortunately it was a hard sell and we had to say no to quite a few different people before they would let us go. It deffinately spoiled our second day there. You don't have to accept the invitation to the lunch so i would advise anyone to turn it down.

Apart from that we could'nt fault the hotel or the staff and will be returning in the next couple of years

Room Tip: I would recommend rtying to get a top floor room to make the most of the views
