“Two rooms- horrible A/C”
Reviewed 23 June 2014 via mobile

Brought a group of 21 for a fun getaway. Third time to bring group to PDC and thought we would upgrade to someplace new. Out of 10 rooms, only 2 have properly cooling A/C and those are closest to lobby. I have the most expensive room on property and I literally laying on top of covers and sweating. I was just told there are no more fans available. This would be a nice enough resort but sweating all night just makes for a miserable hotel stay. One couple have even pulled mattress on to balcony so they can sleep. As I write this, it is my third night here with 2 more to go. I've posted several times on TripAdvisor and I'm always positive and fair. Upside to resort- buffet is plentiful and drinks are too shelf when requested. Beautiful beach and a nicely sized resort. Downside- this just sucks: up all night sweating tends to suck ALOT of the fun out of vacation. This hotel is definitely of the group trip list.

This was our second trip to Riu Palace Riviera Maya (first was 2009), out of the Riu Palaces we've stayed at in Cancun and Cabo - this Riu Palace is TOP NOTCH! The court yards, entertainment crew, beach, and food are amazing in comparison to others that we had to return.

LOVE LOVE: free wi-fi throughout the hotel (wish all Rius had this); beautiful court yards; amazing palm trees; beach chairs; beach hammocks; AMAZING swimmable beach; great HARD WORKING wait staff; yummy food

We made reservations at the Oriental restaurant and really enjoyed the food. There was a sushi platter that was pretty tasty. We left full! We wanted to check out the other restaurants but time got away from us.

This vacation was pretty chill for us, we'd start out at the POOL BAR everyday (they begin serving at 10am) we'd grab a FRESH FRUIT smoothie (set up by the bar) and stake out our chairs. We found a poolside chair easily every day. Our favorite waiters/waitresses: VICTOR and SUME! They really made sure we were taken care of and we took care of them $$! SUME knew the four of us by name and even had a drink ready for us, that is SERVICE!! :) Mr. VICTOR worked breakfast, pool side, and DINNER unsure when Victor has a day off?!?! By 3ish we would head down to the beach to hang out and RIDE the waves. Gosh that was SOOO much fun! LOVED that!!! Dinner by 7ish and then entertainment in the courtyard. They had an amazing band while we were there that did classic rock-big hair bands oh and a little Michael J!! They were TOP NOTCH!! We enjoyed the entertainment shows beginning at 945pm: GREASE and the Music overview.

We definitely plan on returning! Great job!!

Room Tip: Upgrade to a Superior - you'll receive a view of the beautiful courtyard and/or view of the ocea...

My wife and I stayed at the Palace after being terribly disappointed with the Tequila and Yucatan. Our first impression of the Tequila and Yucatan was during a feeding frenzy in their outdoor buffets. We tried the Tequila first then walked to the Yucatan in hopes of an improvement (not). There was trash everywhere with birds and animals picking at it and defecating on the floor near our table. Between the warm humid air, flies, birds, cats, melted ice ream, etc. we totally lost our appetite. On top of that, the "chefs"/food preparers were speaking rudely under their breath and gesturing to the guests. We did eat at one of the indoor buffets for dinner and it was much better, cleaner, better service, etc.

The pools are small compared to most other Riviera Maya resorts we have stayed at. Much of the clientele were a bunch of rough looking, smoking individuals.

Now for the Palace (specifically Riviera Maya), it was great! The place is very beautiful with excellent service. The food was very good and again, the service in the restaurants was superior. The buffets were very good and the Rodizio (Brazilian) was also.

The night time entertainment was good and we enjoyed the shows and Vegas Night.

The pool was slightly smaller than other large Riviera Maya resorts but still nice.

The beach was the best we have ever experienced. It was larger with soft sand, nice swimming area, plenty of lounge chairs and palm trees. The beach barbeque was delicious (chick, steak, hamburgers, hotdogs, etc.) and quite convenient. The pool bar was situated between the pool and beach and was able to serve guests from both.

Rooms were moist and smelled of dampness (bed sheets a little moist).

The place was pretty close to Playa del Carmen which allowed us to walk to shopping and restaurants there.

We would definitely stay again and are planning to in the near future.

We recently returned from a long week-end in Playa at the Riu Palace! We were greeted by amazing front desk personnel (Gabi) who started our trip off on the perfect note. The pool and beach areas were amazing. Great entry and such clear water on the beach...and LOVED the chairs under the palm trees. The pool was perfect, complete with the swim up bar, in-water lounges, and fun activities. The kids were happy and so were the parents! :-) The breakfast buffet in the morning is incredible and the kids were always happy with their omelets, waffles, and other yummy treats. Lunch, poolside, was good and our dinner at the on-site Mexican restaurant was incredible. The only thing keeping this from being a 5 star review was the selection of room service items and late night dining. Our family loves to order burgers and/or snacks late at night on vacation and the room service menu only offers a few (VERY LIMITED) items...that honestly, weren't that great. You can get a microwave hot dog in the sports bar (which was pretty good), but just not a lot of selection. Overall, this was a GREAT vacation with memories to last a lifetime. The one thing our family kept commenting on the entire trip was has NICE EVERYONE was. Seriously, I don't think we've ever had such service, where EVERYONE seemed to truly care and helped ensure we had a worry-free, relaxing vacation!!! Would definitely recommend to family and friends!

I stayed at the riu palace with my boyfriend June 10-17th. Once you get there the lobby is beautiful and breathtaking! Very beautiful grounds indeed. The beach was lovely with lots of beach chairs, great waves not too too powerful and not rocky at all, white sands and gorgeous turquoise water, it was Just perfect! Feel free to go to the little water equipment hit they have at the left side of the beach when entering the beach because you can use the sailing equipment, boogie boards and the snorkelling gear for free! But only for one hour as it's fair because other people can enjoy it as well.

The restaurants are overall good not excellent. We found that the beach restaurant -chilis often the selection is the same everyday with one dish they do that's different and it's a specialty dish with a chef preparing it fresh in front of you. Although sometimes the food tastes dry because it is constantly being heated and than the strong breeze from the beach would dry up the food as well. So that was a bummer but the other buffet is quite good and that one is open for lunch too which I didn't realize till the last day because everyday we would wake up and rush to the beach and grab chilis food for breakfast and lunch. The Brazilian restaurant had a unique concept where they come out with different meats and cut it fresh in front of your table and the pineapple with brown sugar was delicious! Must try, it was a very neat experience. There was lobster at the steakhouse (which is chilis at night) that was exciting for me since I love seafood. I liked how the big buffet below the lobby has a different theme every night and one night they had a bunch of crab claws to eat. Other than that the Japanese restaurant was mediocre since I've had a lot of sushi before.

The rooms were nice but beware if you get assigned room 3089 reject it right away and ask for a different room!!! My boyfriend and I had to go back and forth to the front desk because the room key lock was inactive and didn't work.... 4 TIMES!!! First time- fine, (stuff happens right?) second time .. Alright annoying but 4 times?! Really??? And the front desk people didn't even seem surprised not did they express and sympathy for us! We had to wait for the technician to recharge and reboot the battery lock every time this happened, it was super annoying! Thanks to Hugo at the front desk, the manager/supervisor he PROMISED us that he "will do anything and everything he can for that not to happen again" and than the day right after guess what happens?... You guessed it our room key didn't work again. At that time it was our second last day and they said they were going to give us an upgraded room but never even followed through so that made us very angry and disappointed, for such a beautiful resort with friendly staff and considered as a five star resort, you would think that Hugo would have treated us better or actually followed through with his promises. Nope not even a phone call or anything apologetic even though he said he will personally call us back to let us know.

Any who other than that room key problem everything else was nice. The infinity pool was lovely and the view was immaculate. Be sure to check out all the other rius as you have access to them for free and they're not far at all! The riu Mexico which is the recently renovated one is a one to check out it's pretty posh and unique looking it's just a 10 minute walk from the entrance of the hotel you just turn left and walk straight, that's it. We went to the riu tequila for the disco and it was fun.

Be sure to tip everyone because they work very hard and you can make their day even if it's a dollar. I really enjoyed staying here but the only thing I would suggest for improvements is the food selection and the room keys being active. Thanks a lot Hugo for promising us something and not doing anything at all, even though you said you would do everything you can to make sure it would not happen again... We owe it to you that we wasted some of our vacation time coming back and forth from our room on the third floor back to the front desk to deal with this issue.

The riu palace is a really gorgeous resort and it is a beautiful place to stay with a
beautiful beach and lovely hard workers.

Also it was my boyfriends birthday June 11 and they surprised us with a lovely little plate of chocolate covered strawberries. Our housekeeper was awesome she decorate sour room with balloons and flowers all over the bed! What a lovely surprise! A little tip goes a long way! Overall great stay.. May come back again.

This is my second all inclusive experience after going to Secrets in Cancun earlier this year. Not a fair comparison. Secrets was much better, cleaner, more comfortable, better food and just overall nicer.
The Riviera Palace has a much nicer beach with the coconut palms and plenty of shaded areas.
That is the best part. The rooms were musty and with the ac running constantly, the rooms only got cold at 3am. Keep your shades closed always.
The food.... Well the buffet was the best of the restaurants. The ala carte restaurants aren't worth it. The Brazilian restaurant was far from what you've experienced and you are hurried out for the next group.
Beds are not comfortable at all and the humidity always seemed to make them feel wet.
Like I said though, it's not all bad.
The staff is amazing and accommodating. They and the beach are the best part.
The sauces the chefs make are very flavorful and have a way of making dry eggs and soggy chileciles taste great. If you like spice, you can get it here.
4 days here and I'm looking forward to an air conditioned room when I get home.

Beautiful resort. Employees always helpful and cheerful. Food was good and our room was clean. Plenty of hot water and air conditioning worked well. The beach was great and waiters were great running drinks there. Waiters in all restaurants were friendly. We stayed ten days and enjoyed each day. We will return again
