“great last-night-before-flying-home hotel!”
Reviewed 10 April 2011

It seems like we've made Playa del Karma our traditional last-night stay in Mexico, before flying home out of Cancun. This was our second time there and we were just as pleased with the hotel/service, etc. as we were two years ago.
It's a quiet and small hotel, tucked away off the main drag of Fifth Avenue. The rooms are cosy, comfortable and clean. The bathrooms have beautiful talavera sinks and tile and a walk-in shower with lots of hot water!
There is a small but, inviting pool which was really refreshing after our bus ride from Tulum to Playa on a hot afternoon. The small courtyard is beautifully landscaped.
Playa del Karma is an easy walk to Fifth Avenue and tremendous restaurants, entertainment and last minute shopping.
We'll definitely stay at Playa del Karma next year when we re-visit the Yucatan Penninsula.

My girlfriend and I stayed here for 5 nights in March 2011. It was our first trip to Playa Del Carmen, and I must say that this hotel proved to be an exceptional value. Being students, we were on a fairly tight budget and the price we payed through a package deal with flight on Expedia was very reasonable. We also opted for transportation to and from the airport through expedia ($40 per person roundtrip) and that worked out very well. The hotel itself has a unique charm to it with an open common area in the middle of the hotel that was perfect for relaxing with a book &/or cervesa, the rooms were very clean (daily), nice/large shower. The room had a fan which we used daily and an air conditioner which we never had to turn on. WiFi was strong as we were in a room towards the back and had no problem watching streamed movies. The staff was exceptional! Both of the hotel's primary attendants went above and beyond to make our stay enjoyable and you could tell that they really cared about their guests and their hotel's reputation. Examples: We were going to do the Chichen Itza trip at $99 per person through the sightseeing companies (could be $22 using public transport - but no guide - which we wanted) - the hotel informed us of a deal they worked out to offer this same guided trip - with a buffet and extra stops at a cool Cenote (Underground river...bring your swim suit) and Valadolid (neat Mexican city) included in a $50 per person ticket....GREAT DEAL! Also, we decided last minute that we wanted to do a snorkeling trip - Stephania contacted the company to lock in our places and even walked us to the pick up location a few blocks away (we had to walk since we were late additions) to make sure we got on ok.
Location is excellent - just a couple blocks and you are in the middle of the tourist area and four blocks to the beach. I prefer not to be right in the middle of the loud tourist area where bars/clubs are open really late. Convenience store (OXOX) on the next block towards the ocean where you can buy snacks & beach goodies (including a cooler).
We had a great time and would definitely stay at Play Del Karma again next time we go to Playa Del Carmen and would recommend to any other traveler looking for an alternative to the mega resorts.

The best thing about Playa del Karma was the location - it was a 1 minute walk to 5th ave and the beach, but by being off 5th made a big difference as it wasn't busy or noisy around the hotel and we slept peacefully and comfortably. The room was a decent size, big comfortable bed, good TV and cupboard space, and a clean and decent bathroom. We particularly loved coming home to the towel creations left by the cleaners.

The staff were useful and friendly, but our only criticism was that they weren't upfront about some of the benefits included in our room fee. We had to enquire about our free beach club passes, breakfast and the code to the internet - none of this information was mentioned to us in advance as if they were hoping we wouldn't bring it up.. But, once we did the staff were very helpful and always smiling and polite. The laundromat next door was also very handy, as was the free internet, and all in all we were very happy with our stay.

We stayed 3 nights at the Hotel Playa del Karma after stopping in with no reservations. We were so happy with the room that was available, a king size bed with new linens and beautifully decorated. The hotel is a thatch roof style surrounded by lovely plants and trees. The swimming pool was a bit small but okay to cool off. The location was only about 5 minutes from the beach and many restaurants and shops within walking distance. The hotel staff was so helpful and the price was perfect for our budget. We would highly recommend this hotel to everyone.

Upon arrival, my husband and I were told due to the issues in Egypt (we're guessing influx of tourists???-no further explanation was given) we had been moved to the sister hotel, Alux.

The Alux, while clean and quiet (other than VERY thin walls) was not what we had hoped or paid for in the comfort department. We were given a discount of $10USD, yet the deposit we paid a month prior was not refunded, therefore, we paid the same as we would have at the nicer place, Playa del Karma.

We were only there for one night, so it wasn't so horrible...but lesson learned!

We´re really sorry about your discomfort, as I had mentioned before the other hotel has the same category 3 stars like our, the little difference in the price is because they don´t have pool, spa and restaurant services.
But to be fair you should mention the compensation that we given to you and forgot to mention. Besides you will be discounted 10 us in your rate, you was allowed to use ours hotel´s facilities and two breakfasts for free on your check out day at a cost of 6 U.S. per person and two free massages with duration of 20 minutes at cost of 15US each and Mamitas beach club tickets free at 9 US cost (two tanning beds, one umbrella and 10% discount in the Mamitas beach restaurant), with a totally amount more than 50US, If you decide to take or not advantage of this benefits compensation it was you choice.
Anyway if this is not enough to compensate for their discomfort, we ask you again your bank account number, where we can deposit the 7.30 Us you requires to us to repair the damage that we cause you.
However it was never our intention to create you such a nuisance. SORRY AGAIN!!!!!!! We always try to give good solutions to all our clients even if some times is difficult.

We appreciate your comment as it helps us to improve our quality of service we learnd the lesson, thank you very much.

Great little hotel with fabulous staff, we stayed here over four nights and had a very nice time.

Pros - Great location if you want to get around Playa del Carmen quickly; Great little hideaway in the city with a lusciously green courtyard; Very helpful and courteous staff ready to help in anyway (pleasant for such a small hotel).

Cons - Location, right next to a large Catholic church so the bells can wake you up early; Thatched roofed-rooms make a nice atmosphere but let a lot of noise in; Karma sounds a lot like Carmen, make sure the taxi/shuttle/etc driver understands KARMA is the name of the hotel.

- Make sure to ask about the beach chair rental coupons (slight discount)
- WiFi is a little spotty but works well enough
- Pool is small but you have a beach a few blocks away
- Great location to a many great little taco shops one block over

This hotel is a great value, the service is very friendly, the inner courtyard with small pool and lights strung across palm trees is a lovely oasis, and the rooms are clean and equipped with AC, tv and small deposit box. There was a high vaulted thatched roof which made the room feel airy but unfortunately not too sound proof. Right across from the new ADO bus station so a good place to stay if you are catching an early morning bus from the station. Just a couple blocks from 5th ave where all the action happens at Playa.
