1. have been going to playa for 13 yrs.
2. have stayed at big and large all inclusive
3. have stayed at hotels.
4. have seen the el taj infrastructure as it was being built
5. have seen the beach reclamation
6. have seen the damage to the beaches from hurricane and undertow
7. know all about the noise from the next door beachclub. actually CC0612 does not realize that the acoustics at el taj are not as he describes...not sure of 612 problem. have stayed at palms right next to music.....that was earth shattering. clubs now play at much lower decibels as the speakers on beach are no longer there. i think the acoustics at el taj are excellent.
8. el taj beach is located at a historic fisherman's site. it is right in front of the hotel. it is not the best, surf/wind/storm bring in the kelp. it is not ideal for the casual swim. but a few yards either way there is acceptable swimming. all in all, the beach/fisherman is a compromise of the old fishing village of playa del carmen and the 21st century
9. important to know that management/owner are very sensitive to their patrons. they try hard to get it right....keep in mind, they cannot control whether you catch a fish, or you happen to get some rainy days or the mexican communications/internet is not up to USA standards but this is MEXICO. the el taj people want to help you. remember english is their second language and we talk real fast (just like they do in their own tongue). with some gentle persistence you will get your point across and they will try to help.
10. if you want a perfect beach in a foreign land with instant wifi, monogramed bathrobes and slippers, and a gourmet breakfast lunch and dinner with a concierge with 25 yrs of contacts, el taj probably will frustrate. but if you want a good structure, with good people in a beautiful old fishing village that has a taste of europe and want to enjoy this type of mexico, el taj is the place

We recently returned from a nine day stay at the El Taj and it was absolutely fantastic! Our check in was quick (thank you Ari & Flor) and the staff was very friendly and accommodating to every need that our family required (especially Crispin & Juan Carlo at the Indigo Beach Club). We stayed in a 3bdrm/2 bath penthouse suite and it was incredible to say the least. The suite was clean, very large and had everything (and then some) to accommodate my family which includes my wife who is 5 months pregnant and our 20 month old son. The rooftop terrence was perfect for bbq'ing every night of our stay and the view from up there (along with the breeze coming off the water) is truly spectacular! We enjoyed the fact that the hotel/condo was close to 5th Ave so it was easy to get whatever we needed (groceries, gelato's, cigar's, smoothies etc.) and had no problems with noise as we slept very comfortably each night. I would certainly recommend the El Taj to anyone that wants a relaxing holiday with a beautiful beach and no hassles... we look forward to returning in the near future.

I recently returned from an utterly miserable week-long stay at El Taj. I decided to book at El Taj based on the website and the positive reviews, neither of which could have been any more misleading.

Check-in was a long process during which I was subjected to a lot of unnecssary attitude from the front desk. (They later blamed Expedia for a "mix up" and didn't so much as apologize for wasting 2 hours of my vacation.) The unit itself was clean and reasonably well-appointed if a little dark and cave-like. The phone and internet worked only intermittently, which was very irritating. The room lacked amenities like bathrobes and even hair conditioner that are admittedly not essential but that you would typically find at other luxury properties. But the biggest problem with the room was the cheap single-pain glass, which lets in all of the noise from the outside.

To be clear about the location, it is a block away from 5 nightclubs that play very loud music every night of the week, all year round from about 11pm until 6am. The music was so loud in the bedroom that I could clearly make out all of the lyrics to the songs, and my bedframe and walls vibrated from the bass. Needless to say, it was unbearable and there was no rest to be had. (FYI, I not a sensitive sleeper and in fact live in a high rise building in a big city and always sleep through car alarms, sirens, horns, the train, etc. throughout the night. So if I can't sleep through it, it is LOUD.) I called the front desk and was offered ear plugs - obviously this was not their first complaint if they have those on hand. I was told that there were no other rooms available so I could not be moved. Obviously this was a lie because you could see online that other units were available, but management was dismissive and rude. Instead of having a fun and relaxing vacation, I was a sleep-deprived mess for the entire week.

Please believe the other reviews that warn you about the beach - do NOT trust the photos on the website as they are not recent. The beach has fishing boats for 100 yards in either direction. There is a stench of fish at the beach club, and, for added ambiance, they sometimes gut and clean the fish right there in front of you and then throw the remains in the water right in front of the hotel. It is a 5-10 minute walk to a place where you can swim. You can't walk in the surf because there are knee-high ropes to tie up the boats every 10 feet or so, making the beach resemble an obstacle course. The beach is obviously man-made in parts, and the sand is rocky/grainy. There was also a disgusting amount of sea kelp that snakes around your legs and turns the water brown in parts. It was truly one of the worst beaches I have ever seen.

I wish I could say that the pool redeemed the poor beach set-up, but the pools were also very disappointing. Two small pools with no sunlight and 5 (5!) beach chairs each. No bar or restaurant service at the pools.

There is one beach restaurant (a collection of wooden chairs in the sand) that is fine for breakfast or lunch - pizza, french fries, chips and guac, that sort of thing. The food is a little expensive but pretty good, just be forewarned that there is no fine dining option.

You cannot charge anything to your room, so you must carry cash/credit cards (and ID) at all times. This gets a little tricky if you're at the beach and want to go for a swim. I've never seen 4-5 star hotel where you're unable to charge things to your room.

Overall, the room is 3.5 stars, and the location and amenties are 1 star. I feel like I was completely ripped off and returned from my vacation more exhausted then when I left. If you're looking for relaxation and a little luxury, do yourself a favor and look elsewhere.

Room Tip: None - avoid this dump!

We have just returned from El Taj, (march 2012). We (myself, wife and 2 boys 3&7) have stayed with condohotel many times in the past and loved our time at El Taj.

The location on the beach is great, with pool, ocean, a choice of lounge chair, and the restaurant all right there.

We stayed in a 2 bedroom unit on the 2nd floor with a great view of the ocean and the dock that I'm sure is in those beer commercials. With the good size washer dryer (the wife loved that with all the kids clothes), and hot tub, (yes a real hot tub, not just a warm spa).

Can't wait to return.

We stayed in 336 penthouse (ocean view), late march 2012.
Read the 4 and 5 reviews, they're pretty accurate.
Read the 2 reviews, they're pretty accurate as well.

The real kicker is the disco noise. Starts early and goes until sunup. There's no getting away from it as it's low frequency techno thump, like the gansta wanna be in the car next to you at the stop light. It's unfortunate as this isn't really the properties fault, but regardless, you can't sleep through it. The back bedrooms are a little better, the master is the worst. I wonder if all the 4 and 5 reviews are from folk staying in the beach view condos where they're more shielded from the noise?

Other little dings include limited bar ware (no shaker, no martini glasses, no lime squeezer, no measuring cup). The hot tub wasn't hot the first nite (had to have maintenance come up to do something). Not equipped with hot tub towels, no dining room table and just 4 chairs at the island (for a 3 bedroom penthouse).

We had fun but took naps in the afternoon. Very unfortunate about the music as the place is nice. But it ain't cheap and with so many other options in PDC, I could never recommend this property. At least not 336, maybe the back condos are more shielded.

Room Tip: Far, far away from the techno club (think it's the blue parrot), like maybe Las Palapas.

The El Taj is an excellent choice when in Playa del Carmen. Right on the beach, and an extremely close walk to 5th Ave. the best of both worlds. We stayed in a Beachside Condo, and definitely feel it was the right choice. It is way more quiet and relaxing on that side, much less crowded and less noise. The pool and jacuzzi on that side were perfect to relax. The Oceanfront side is literally 5 seconds away and provides access to Indigo Beach Club and the other pool. We went to Indigo everyday, always had loungers available to us and good service from everyone there. Our drinks were always cold and timely. We would not recommend eating at Indigo, there are way too many great options in Playa. The beachfront itself may be the only negative part of staying here, as there are fishing boats in front and is not really a spot to go in the water. You can walk 2 minutes over, but thats not the same. We used the gym daily, it was awesome, had first class equipment & facilities and even different classes if you were interested. We found all staff at the El Taj to be extremely helpful and friendly. The one issue we had when we arrived was with the door lock on our condo, it was fixed and replaced immediately while the Manager watched. The condo itself had everything you could need, the water cooler was extremely useful, as was the full kitchen. The maid service was always punctual and great. Overall, it was an amazing stay, we will definitely return, and once again choose a Beachside Condo.

The beach is pretty crappy. You can't enjoy a swim in it. The rooms are great but the beach ruins any future visit. We were able to sleep and had an oceanfront 3br condo. But the first two nights, fri sat, you could hear the clubs. When you get up at 6//7 am you see all the drunk club goers hanging out on the beach... nice... Would consider going again if the boats were gone and the beach were better, because we got a pretty good deal. For those who say the boats are no big deal and "picturesque", they must not like to swim, or like to allow their kids to do so safely. I was always jumping up and yelling for my daughter to get out while boats were pulling in and out. 5th ave was a lot of fun being so close. Beach is a total dealbreaker. We had to walk 10 min to find a nice place to swim. Rood security guy between pool and beach.
