Reviewed 15 March 2013 via mobile

Stayed in unit #325 in the Oceanside El Taj for 10 nights with my family of 5. Pools were smaller than I imagined but unique and beautiful. Lots of chlorine so blondes be ware!!! Kids liked the lagoon pool across the street in Beachside El Taj the best. Grass and plantings surround the black tiled pool.

Rooms were clean and kitchen was well stocked. Pay extra for an ocean view, well worth it. Railings and decks are dangerous for toddlers so just be weary and watch constantly!

Hotel is mostly European guests which gives it a very hip international vibe. Downtown Playa is just blocks away and so much fun to walk around. Would return to El Taj for sure.

Do not take photos with a group called Ecopercetion.org!!! They claim they are seeking donations for the animal sanctuaries but this is false. They have been on 5th avenue with Tiger cubs, monkeys, jaguars and lions. Very sad and sedated animals. Not reputable group at all.

We recently had the pleasure of staying at El Taj for a week. Our condo was gorgeous!!!!! We knew what the unit would look like through pictures, but in person it is even more beautiful. Everything is supplied for your convenience. The staff and owner go out of there way to accommodate your every need. So friendly and gracious. Fabulous beachside breakfast at Indigo Blue. The beach is adorned with tanning beds and chaise lounges and Bali inspired umbrellas. Again, beach staff so attentive with food/bar service (very yummy) and always there to move your umbrella if needed before you even have to ask. Service outstanding. Can't wait to return. Thank you Jack and the staff of El Taj

My family has been going to Playa Del Carmen every other year since 1992 for our summer vacation. Last summer (2012) we stayed at The El Taj. It was so spectacular and awesome that we are not waiting until 2014 to return. We have already booked our summer vacation for 2013 at The El Taj. Great location, private beach with great service, walking distance to downtown, beautiful rooms, and the staff is one of the best that we have ever encountered! If you are considering going to Playa Del Carmen then you need to seriously consider this hotel.

Upper floors and units closer to beach have better views and noise insulation was perfect with thick windows.. We were in unit 329 and it was great---nice view from lvg room. Service from all the staff was excellent, professional, courteous and always ready to respond. To the traveller who was unimpressed by the lobby/reception area had this condo-hotel confused with the big impersonal all-inclusives which this hotel's cozy style is not! Also, having breakfast on the beach with your toes in the sand is unique and fun, again different strokes for different folks! Breakfast was very good, fresh fruit, eggs any way you want, juices, pastry, cheeses etc., no complaints there! This is close to the best you can get for staying in a city with beach right there. Now, there are drawbacks as in any city, occasionally sewer smells or some sulfur-fishy odors that came and went but the tradewinds kept the air circulating. We didn't particularly like the fishing boats in front of the El Taj beach, quaint yes for 1 or 2 but there were too many of them parked where we would be swimming! The pool was not "tiny" as some reviewers wrote, handy for a quick few laps and aqua-robics---again shouldn't confuse this pool with pools in those impersonal big all inclusives hotels. All in all, nice holiday and recommend to anyone seeking vacation in a luxurious ambience provided one chooses units on upper floors.

Room Tip: Corner suites are large and sunny, higher floors have less noise and better views

Dear Buon
Thank you for pointing out all the great features of our property and what other guests can expect. When there are bad trade-winds or stormy weather we sometimes recieve seaweed that gets washed ashore along the entire coast. It's rare when it does occur and we do our best to clean the beach early mornings. We're glad you took notice that we kept the beach resturant as natural as possible and people like yourself love sitting barefoot and in their bathing suits while dinning. We like when people feel right at home in El Taj.

I could have dealt with the lack of hot water in the Master Bedroom, the front door that didn't lock, the Hurricane gate that wouldn't open and the very loud music that started at 10:00pm every night...if I just would have had a balcony. We had put down our approx $500/night about 4 months in advance and were really looking forward to that balcony, as in the picture, overlooking the ocean as a nice escape from the cold winter, figuring they could get it done with 4 months notice and $500/night. It didn't happen. We were given a "Beachside" room (no beach in sight) with a view of the dusty parking lot. When I asked to change rooms, even indicating that we would move to a smaller room at the same price, I was told, sorry, that there was a man in Mexico City who was expecting the revenue from the room and that was not possible.

That being said, as the saying goes, a bad day at the beach beats a good day at the office any day. So, we didn't let it spoil our trip -- even after we got food poisoning at the Imprevist. (Do not eat the mussels.) Although I wonder about some of the glowing reviews on Trip Advisor (perhaps they all stayed on the "Oceanside"), it is a decent condo/hotel in a good location and undoubtedly you'll feel it was worth it (whatever the price) as long as you get that balcony...If not, I suggest you look elsewhere. There would have to be better value somewhere else in Playa....

Room Tip: The rooms in the "Beachside" facility are a poor value. If you plan on staying there, I su...

Dear KrungTiep
We are sorry if you received less than what you expected and sometimes travel agents forget to point out the room type or may not be familiar with all the types of units we have to offer. We recommend every guest contact us directly as we can suggest the best units and insure it offers what you expect. There are many units with large balconies and direct unobstructed ocean views.
There is no excuse for the lack of hot water or a faulty door lock and I am glad we took care of that malfunction as soon as you arrived. Regardless thank you for complimenting our property and the value we offer when you know what to expect.

The condo units here are very nice with everything you need. Hot tubs, grills, wi-fi and everything is clean. I felt that the most outstanding aspect of this trip over Christmas week 2012 was the service. the gentlemen that work the beach are great, always checking on you without disturbing you if you are resting with your eyes closed. They are ready to adjust your umbrella if the sun is in your eyes or to bring you another dring or some food. there is ONLY 1 drawback and that is the early shade (about 5PM) on the beach due to the buildings.

Dear AndyPro
Thank you for the glowing review...unfortunately December is the shortest days of the year and the sun sets at 5:00PM. In March the days get much longer and especially with daylight savings time it gets dark after 7:00 pm. The South side of beach club has the least amount of shade. We're looking forward to your return visit next month.

I, along with my husband, loved PDC and El Taj. Since this was our first time to Playa I researched many hotels. El Taj couldn't have been better! We met wonderfully interesting people and the grounds, rooms were perfect. We LOVED our bed. We will definitely be coming back and bringing our kids.
