“El Taj-Dec 23-30,2013”
Reviewed 2 January 2014

Just returned from our family trip to El Taj. We stayed in two different rooms during our stay and they were both very well appointed, and comfortable for a family of four. Having essentially your own condo with the benefit of maid service was delightful. The properties design is nice with lots of foliage and koy ponds, however I do think its missing a grand lobby entrance like most are usually used to.
As mentioned, this property is not far from the action, just a short walk away from 5th Ave. This was great at night because you could walk to dinner and feel very safe. It worked well with teenagers, and it was always easy to find something to eat. The grocery store is a walk away as well, which made it nice to get some food for breakfasts and lunches if you decide to go that route.
The staff was very attentive, and we always got what we needed right away. Do to the time of year, we had to change rooms midway through our stay to make our vacation work, and the staff made it happen effortlessly. I didn't have to do anymore than go get new keys.
The draw backs for me would be the noise and the beach. The hotel/condo is very close to several large dance clubs and the music began around 10pm and went on and on until 3-4am every night. It was very loud. They mention sound proof windows, but it did not help trust me. We didn't let it bother us, but if you are a light sleeper, this may pose a problem. My other issue was with the beach. It was very crowded, and due to beach erosion, just not that big. Lot's of boats parked right in from of the resort as well. I will say I knew this going in (all except for the extent of the beach erosion due to the last hurricane) so it didn't come as a surprise. I knew it wasn't going to be pristine, so I still had a very enjoyable time.

Room Tip: We stayed "Beachside". I would choose to stay "oceanside" next time.

We just spent a week staying at El Taj in two units for 13 family members. Unit 302 is very large and accommodated 9 of us, while the other 4 stayed in unit 307. The front desk staff and housekeeping were always smiling and responded to anything we asked of them. The concierge service was excellent, and a we really appreciated the service from Manuel in the concierge office - he was awesome! The beach area is nice, however, there are many large boats that are tethered right there and make the beach access more challenging. I have no idea why they have the boats "park" at their beach, but it's a shame because it would be so much nicer otherwise. The location is great for getting around all the main areas - beach and city life of Playa. This made it really nice and easy to walk to 5th Ave or to walk to other places for dinner, shopping, the grocery (Mega), etc. We felt safe and liked the choice of the pools (even though they are relatively small) and beach front. The biggest issue is the noise (some might call it music) blasting from the nearby clubs from about 10 pm-3 or 4 am night after night. We had read somethings in previous reviews about the noise, but this did not prepare us for the reality of the noise and pounding bass well into the night. It's annoying and exhausting. If you are a light sleeper or your bedroom faces that direction, be ware. Otherwise, El Taj was great, and we would stay there again, but maybe in a different unit. We had a wonderful dinner one night prepared by the personal chef, Coty. She is so nice and sweet and was a pleasure to work with in planning and cooking the meal. We also had great dinners at El Fogon, Aquachilles, Barro Negro, and Kaxapa.

Room Tip: Higher floors seem to have more noise. Some bedrooms in 302 are much quieter than others.

This is a beautiful hotel and nice spacious condo. The staff was nice but I would not book anything through them unless you do not mind paying a premium. As indicated, it is located on the centralized beach in town and is very crowded and has a bit of a sewer smell on the beach. Overall, we would not choose to stay here again

We stayed at El Taj during 4th of July week. The property and the room were kept really well. The staff was very friendly. Breakfast at the one of the restaurants shared by all the sister properties was very tasty.

El Taj is located within blocks of all the restaurants and bars. But if you want to venture away from the main road of 5th ave, it's super close too as the play del carmen is a small town.

I know many reviewers complain about the small swimming pools and beach and the boats that are docked on the beach. I think if you are looking for a place with large pools and a long stretch of beach to hang around all day, it may better to choose a large resort. We went on many day trips and spend limited amount of time in the pool and on the beach, so this property was perfect for that.

Condos are spacious, with beautiful bathrooms, and equipped with everything needed to make life easy. Staff is generally on top of things and caring; but housekeeping was kind of lax. Our suite was never cleaned until late afternoon. Very good food and service at the beach restaurant, and a fun ambiance. But we were shocked to see how much the beach had eroded in a couple of years. The pier that used to be directly accessible from the beach is now perched out in the water, within swimming distance. Some hotels farther along the waterfront have only a skinny strip of beach remaining.

Room Tip: We made sure to book a suite as far from the blaring midnight clubs as possible, although we learned...

We stayed in unit 340 for a week as a family. Our family even included 2 small children (3 years and 4 months). I cannot tell you who enjoyed the vacation more, if the adults or the kids. The condo is very well situated, nestled in quietness but 2 blocks away from 5th avenue which is playa's shopping area. 5th avenue has a ton of restaurants and shops so there was always something to do if we didn't feel like staying in the hotel (bonus is you don't need a car as it's a 2 block walk and cars are not allowed in 5th avenue).

The pool area is wonderful, sun hits it slightly in the morning and it is fully shaded in the afternoon (which is a wonderful thing if you are traveling with children). The ocean has chairs and umbrellas which are free to use for el taj guests. The staff at indigo beach (the restaurant that is directly oceanfront) are amazing. Waiters are always eager to serve and always smiling. Room service is awesome, prices for the food were excellent.

There is full maid service which was great. Each unit has it's own kitchen and if you book one of the penthouses, they also have a top terrace that has a bbq and a private jacuzzi. This was one of our favorite spots. If you can, try to book one of the two penthouses that are directly oceanfront. You will not be dissapointed!

Room Tip: two top penthouses have unobstructed views of the ocean, a second floor terrace with a bbq, sun chai...

This was our second visit, and it was every bit as good as the first. This time We stayed in unit 340, top floor 3 bedroom, 3 bath, ocean front and it included the penthouse patio. What a treat! The decor is quire modern with a Balinese flair. The condo itself was spotless, and thanks to our wonderful housekeeper it remained spotless for our entire 10 day stay! We are very impressed with the daily maintenance that keeps the entire property top notch.
The INDIGO BEACH CLUB staff really made the trip enjoyable. Their service was over the top.....elegant dinners, breakfast buffets, room service, or drinks and umbrellas on the beach. Their service beats anything I've experienced in the States. The location of El Taj is perfect. You can bask in the seclusion of this boutique property, or walk two blocks to enjoy the shopping and night life of Playa del Carmen.
El Taj guests also have access to "The Gym". The workout facility is really clean with lots of modern equipment. This was a very nice amenity.

Room Tip: The oceanfront condos with the rooftop patio are well worth the splurge. I was surprised how much w...
