My boyfriend and I stayed at Nueva Vida for 6 nights in May. It was the first time either of us has been to Mexico. Staying at Nueva Vida was a great experience. Enough cannot be said about the pristine beaches, friendly staff and great food/culture.
I used Trip Advisor reviews while finding a place to vacation and thought I could add some helpful tips.
Transportation: We decided not to rent a car. We chose USA transfers which picked us up at the Cancun Airport. We were very happy with their service. We were a little worried about being picked up at the end of our trip since you pay up front, but our driver came 15 minutes early! We found it wasn't really necessary to rent a car unless you were planning on going outside of Tulum. You could get almost anywhere with a taxi and they are cheap.
Activities: The first few days of our stay were rainy, so we spent most time on our porch and taking walks on and off the beach. When it got nice out, we booked two snorkeling trips with Mexidivers, who work through Nueva Vida. I felt as though their services were great. Our ocean snorkel was with one other couple and the guides were friendly and helpful. I felt a little sea sick on the way back and they were very kind. We also went cenote diving. For this they picked us up at Nueva Vida and took us to Dos Ojos. I highly recommend cenote diving for a VERY different experience. It was also nice because it was just me and my boyfriend and the guide.
Food/Entertainment: We had many very good meals in Tulum. We went to El Tabano. This is a great place and very romantic. As mentioned before, all the menu is written on a board and in Spanish. You can watch the kitchen make your food. We ordered 3 appetizers and one entree. Everything was great. The vegetable lasagna was excellent, as well as the bean salad. Another good choice is Posada Margarita. They sit down at your table and explain the menu. This place is only about a 20 minute walk on the beach. We frequented La Zebra which is a few places down from Nueva Vida. They have good lunch and the salsa lessons on Sunday was fun. Of course, we dined at Casa Banana for breakfast each morning and a few times for lunch and once for dinner. Very good food. We liked everything we ordered.
Nueva Vida: I can't say more about the staff and even the security. Anytime we had a question or needed advice the staff was more than happy to help. They made all of our activity reservations and called us taxis. Examples of their hospitality is on the first night we got there it was raining so they gave us an umbrella. Another night, the security guard went and got us bug spray while we were waiting for a cab. A note on security: We felt very safe while there. Anytime we got back after dark, a guard would walk us to our cabana with a flashlight. One also stays out on the beach all night.
Pasion Marina: We enjoyed our stay at Pasion Marina, which is basically right on the beach. Most nights we slept without the mosquito net and with our door open.
Things you should bring:
Bug Spray (lots)
A flashlight--we didn't bring one and it would have been VERY helpful, especially walking home in the dark
A camera--wake up early and watch the sunrise!
I can't wait to go back to Nueva Vida again!
