“Home away from home”
Reviewed 22 May 2014

My experience at Olas is not one that will soon be forgotten. For starters, the location alone is nothing short of a dream. Whereas most of Tulum beach has become a bit crowded and loud for my taste, the beach in front of Casa de las Olas is quiet, pristine and secluded. Apart from the occasional passerby, you truly feel that you have the beach all to yourself.

More impressive than the setting is the remarkable, caring staff. From the incredible homemade food that is coming out of Lulu's kitchen to hosts Jimmy and Sam's personalized maps of their favorite local spots in Tulum, the entire crew goes above and beyond to ensure you feel right at home. And certainly not to go without notice is their deep rooted commitment to running completely sustainably and leaving their paradise intact for many generations to come.

Olas is a beautiful secret that I found myself lucky to have been a part of. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a peaceful getaway in a VERY special place.

Just stayed here a week ago, on a solo trip. Perfect location at end of Tulum beach, supremely relaxing. Small, intimate, great breakfast and lunches by the delightful Lulu. My room was perfect, and the staff are friendly, professional and incredibly helpful. The other guests I met were all interesting, and hosts Jimmy and Sam were great at recommending things and setting the tone for the place. And on my last night, some chef friends of Jimmy (the Cook It Raw people) cooked an incredible feast right at the property, making for a magical ending to a magical 4 days.

We split our Tulum trip between two hotels. The first was a cabana on the jungle side of the road at a mid-level hotel for under $200/night. The second was the Ocean Front Suite at Casa de las Olas for $300/night. It was on the high end of our budget, but we thought we'd splurge for something truly special based on the TripAdvisor reviews.

First, the pros. Tulum in general is a paradise. Every place we went to was lovely, and Casa de las Olas was no exception. The property is beautiful, and the beach is quiet and secluded (it's the last property before Sian Ka'an). As noted in all of the reviews above, Lulu was wonderful, and we really looked forward to having a home-cooked meal each morning. We were out and about most afternoons, so we didn't see Antonio much, but on our last day he brought us coconuts on the beach and they were the best we had on the whole trip. And the free bikes are a nice touch.

If the room had been $175 a night, I don't think there would have been many cons. However, when $300 is the most you've ever spent on a hotel, the little things stand out. The room was large and it faced the ocean, but wasn't exactly "ocean front", and did not have much of a view. The shower barely worked at all, the toilet seat was broken, we couldn't get the wireless signal or sound dock to work and we didn't receive clean towels once in four days. I understand it's an eco hotel, and showering and fresh towels aren't a top concern at the beach. We're very low maintenance travelers, and if this had been a hostel or mid-range B&B, no problem. However, at $300 a night, it's nice to have the option.

Almost every review has mentioned how great a host Jimmy is. Unfortunately, Jimmy wasn't there during our stay. When we asked about booking a tour at the neighboring Sian Ka'an nature reserve, we were told they didn't have a phone and we could walk there to schedule something. We did that (a 4 km walk and a $30 cab ride back), only to find out that of course they had a phone, and everyone on our tour the next day arranged theirs that way. Mostly, we were on our own and felt as if we were staying at someone's house and they were doing us a favor by letting us crash there (again, for $300 a night).

It's pretty much impossible to have a bad experience in Tulum. I think we just had high expectations given the universally positive reviews and the price. Casa de las Olas was fine – the breakfasts and the remote location were great. Maybe it was an "off" week, but we were really looking forward to being off the beaten path, and we were surprised and disappointed to find we greatly preferred the service and overall experience at one of the more mid-range hotels. We were expecting something special, and came away just feeling like it was expensive.

My Husband and I originally picked this property because it was the last one on the beach. When we arrived, Jimmy and some of his amazing staff( who feels more like family) was there to greet us and help carry everything to our room. We had no idea what to expect having not stayed here before.... we were brought up to our room, which felt like a cozy treehouse. Each room has it's own outdoor space. Ours had two hammocks and a lovely wooden table that we would sit outside and read each day.(we had the room without a balcony) It was very quiet (even though we were there during spring break and there were some older children there with their parents) We would have breakfast every day that LuLu would prepare....she is AMAZING! She would greet us everyday with the biggest smile, and made the most wonderful meals. There is something VERY special about her. Antonio would show up like magic if you needed anything....we would come back to our spot on the beach and there would be coconuts for us. One day he was so nice to drop us off at the super market on his way home. Jimmy is everything that everyone said in the reviews...he is there if you need him but also gives you privacy. He would stop by the beach each day, or during breakfast to see if we needed anything, or just to chat for a minute. It felt very much like we were staying at his house, like one of his friends. We met Sam( who made us feel like we had known her the entire trip!) on our last day...we checked out of our room early and she held our luggage and showed us the outdoor shower that we could use. She also drove us to where the cabs were for our drive back to Playa. We had the most relaxing time. It is all thanks to everyone at Casa De Las Olas....the place and the people are truly special!!! If you are looking for a place to simply be with the person you love the most, and have it feel like you are "home" , this is a perfect choice! Thank you all soooooo much! xo Jean and Michael

Room Tip: We stayed upstairs in the room on the far left. It was very quiet.

Our second visit to this superb location ,no doubt one of the finest on this coast .It was so lovely to just walk onto this lovely secluded beach.
However you need to accept some basic shortfalls as there is no hot water in the wash basin or sink and no basin plug which makes a mockery of the Eco claims. Our first room could have been better equipped in the kitchen although now breakfast can be provided they would prefer you not to eat in your suite.
No doubt the location justifies all, everywhere it is kept clean and tidy with delightful staff

Dear Michael C,

Thank you for taking the time to share your review of your recent stay at Casa de las Olas. We have enjoyed having you and your wife as guests at our little slice of paradise and appreciate your feedback, as it gives us an excellent opportunity to highlight for others what we are about, as well as to improve our services for future guests.

Thank you for drawing our attention to the lack of a sink plug, as this will be a convenient item for guests to use; However, we want to assure you that water is not wasted at Casa de las Olas. Our water supply is sourced from free flowing rivers that feed into the Caribbean just beneath the property. We have gray water systems in place which refilter back into the earth. We capture the limited supply of rain water and judiciously hand water our property with it, so as not to waste a drop.

As you no doubt already know as you are repeat guests to the casa, we are 100% solar-powered and provide our guests with only biodegradable soaps and shampoos so as to reduce the impact on our beautiful environment.

We regret that you found your kitchenette poorly-equipped. We have done our best to ensure the suites are fully-stocked with all the basic cooking equipment and kitchen items appropriate for the suite’s capacity, to make it as easy as possible for our guests to make themselves at home. These items include pots, pans, dishes, utensils, a French press, 5 gallons of drinking water, coffee, sugar, milk, oil, vinegar, and other condiments. Should guests find they are lacking kitchen items, we do our best to accommodate them. We are happy when guests use their kitchens, as we use all their compostable waste to later fertilize the property’s tropical plants.

We began offering breakfast as a response to repeated requests from guests who wanted a fresh, homemade breakfast in a tranquil environment without having to cook themselves or leave the property. Our chef, Lulu, enjoys what she does and painstakingly prepares everything from scratch each morning—from hand-squeezing the fresh juice to making her own granola. As we are not open to the public and generally serve no more than 10 people per day, this is less a financial decision than a labor of love meant to enhance our guests’ experience.

We thank you again for your comments and for giving us an opportunity to showcase our intentions and the type and quality of vacation we hope to offer eco-conscious, well-traveled guests such as yourself and your wife.

5:45AM- Wake up facing a perfect sunrise after the waves lull you to sleep. The Mayans use to call Tulum the land of the dawning sun. It gets no better.
6:30AM- Watch the kite-surfers in the distance dancing under the glowing sun and clouds. The beach will feel like it belongs all to yourself.
9AM- Hola Lulu! Coffee, juice, yogurt, granola, honey, fresh fruit, tortillas, eggs, chorizo... let Lulu take care of you and prepare you with the energy you need to maximize your relaxation time.
11AM- The water is warm, the breeze cool; perfect time to lay in a hammock with a book or enjoy the waves and the powdery sand.
2PM- At some point Antonio will come out of nowhere with a freshly hacked young coconut for you to drink. He will tell you you will need the energy to conquer the many cenotes in the area. Sam will also be around to help you figure out how to best maximize your experience with info about anything you might be interested in doing in Tulum.
6PM- Hartwood for dinner is always recommended, by everyone you will soon find.
8PM- As you relax in your beautiful room, you'll find the waves calling you to sleep...

If you consider yourself a warm person with a good heart, there is no way I could not recommend Casa de las Olas to you. The dignity and respect that the staff show to the land, the culture, their guests, and the property itself, will make you feel a certain warm glow. Unless you are looking to clap twice and have a margarita delivered to you by some tanned thick neck in an air conditioned spa, you will not be disappointed. I would never be willing to invest so many words into a hotel review, so I think of this as a open thank you letter to everyone I met at Olas. Te veo mas tarde!

I honeymooned here and am now planning a return trip...The hosts, the staff, the place, the people...it's all so beautiful and you will be awestruck more than once. I highly recommend anyone to stay here when they are searching for a relaxing, fun trip! (I actually stayed in June 2012-this option was n/a in the dropdown!)

Room Tip: We stayed in the ocean front suite and it was so pretty! The breeze felt great, and I enjoyed the vi...
