After more than an hour of riding up and down the streets of Tulum, and asking many neighborhood folks, and taxi drivers for help with finding the Posada Yum Kin with a map that the owner Dan Bork had emailed me, we finally found out that the posada was several blocks further away from town than the map had portrayed the posada. The map made it appear as if the posada was 3 block from the town's main road, it is more like 6. The distance was not a big deal to us,. We just wanted to find it. It was a huge relief to finally find it, I must say. We were beginning to lose hope.
After knocking for a long time, the door to the Posada opened and there stood a compassionate, and grounded woman, Clayanna, who is presently managing the Posada for the owners.Being the angel that she is, Clayanna, a most gracious hostess, went out of her way to help us with any requests that we had. We immediately felt at home. To his credit, Mr. Bork has created a lovely environment in the middle of a very undeveloped area of town. Once you step into the Posada's cozy inner courtyard you are surrounded by beautiful plants and trees and twinkling christmas lights shimmering among the green. Our room was perfect in every way and beautifully detailed with gorgeous wood accents polished to an infinite glow. We had a comfortable king size bed quality sheets and 4 pillows. It was a real treat to have a fully outfitted kitchen (pots, dishes, coffee pot, silverware, knifes, cutting board etc)and fridge, complete with 2 gas burners with which to make our own food when we wanted to stay in at night. We stayed in an upstairs room which we loved, and it was one flight up to the really lovely rooftop patio where we could sip our coffee in the morning or star gaze at night. We also had a small balcony furnished with 2 chairs for viewing the lovely courtyard below.
Clayanna's presence made all of the difference between simply a peaceful place to stay and a warm and welcoming place to come home to at night. She was simply a pleasure to meet, and was extremely helpful and kind in every way. Dan couldn't have found a better manager for his lovely place. I really didn't get much of a chance to meet the woman (from Columbia) who helps Clayanna, but I heard wonderful things about her, too. The Posada is in a relatively quiet area of town that is undergoing some road construction presently. I would recommend having a car if staying here, or renting a bike from the Posada.
Before we left Clayanna printed out a new map that showed ALL of the streets between town and the Posada, which will enable folks trying to get there in the future to find the place with little difficulty.
Staying here was truly the highlight of all of our accommodations while traveling in Mexico during the last several weeks.
We happened to visit another place close to San Fransisco Market in town that also provided rooms with kitchens for a similar price and found it to lack the charm, congeniality and serenity of Posada Yum Kin. Posada wins hands down as one of the loveliest places to stay in Tulum if you enjoy lovingly cared for spaces hosted by kind, and helpful folks.
