I have had the pleasure at staying at many hotels in my day and el paz is right atop that list. I stayed in the New beach house and this is a wonderful display of how less is more.

The room was absolutely fantastic. The balcony overlooking the sea so peaceful, we even a turtle lay it's eggs! The king bed couldn't have been more comfortable and i slept like a baby with cool ocean breeze. The bathroom was my favorite of anyplace I've ever visited. It was so simply decorated, but so perfect!

The staff was on another level and couldn't have been more helpful. Each day they planned it activities for us as we enjoyed breakfast overlooking the beautiful, crystal clear water. Anything I wanted they were there to help with a big smile.

I couldn't recommend this place any more. It's just a stretch of beach away from the main strip but that makes such a huge difference!

The people at el pez cannot do enough for you. The upstairs room (#10) was really great with a fab breeze and excellent shower. Slept really well and the continental breakfast included in the price is great too. Cocktails are lovely and bar staff really friendly too. All in all would come back to el pez! Slightly more expensive than other hotels but had our best stay here and were on honeymoon so didn't mind.

five stars in the context of the location. This isn't a ritz carlton kind of five stars, because in tulum, it can't be. it SHOULDN'T be... tulum is off the grid- this is an 'experience of a life time' kind of five stars- but might take a night or two to get used to, if you are a hotel brat like me. I researched the hell out of where to stay in Tulum. Props to Chrisie at Travel Destinations for spotting this one. I Went there with my GF after a friend’s wedding at the all-inclusive Valentin Imperial in Playa Del Carmen. In short- This hotel and its bar/ restaurant have my strongest recommendation.

Quick Impressions- hope they help.

The Pros:

SERVICE- absolutely five star service and hospitality, in any context. Whomever is managing the staff is on point. Easily one of the best and most attentive, without being intrusive, staff experiences I've ever had anywhere. Orfe and Donovan at the front desk- a couple other people who’s name I don’t remember. Jose runs food and beverage. He’s an expert at what he does. My sense is that they must have hired him from some big luxury place before this- he operates at a really elite level, while maintaining a sense of humility about him.

LOCATION- Location is one of the best on Tulum beach for a few reasons-
1) it is tucked away in one of only 2 ‘coves’ in that area, so feels really private and vibey. there are 2 beautiful rock formations in front of the hotel, where local fishermen and pelicans put on a hell of a show. I’ve been up and down to all the areas of Tulum beach, and I think that El Pez is the most beautiful. In fact, I’m blessed to say that I’ve been to many special places around the world, and the experience of sitting on the terrace, 40 ft from the ocean, at El Pez is one of the most beautiful and satisfying experiences I’ve ever had.

2) security- the hotel is directly across from a small local police check point, and the hotel has 24 hour roaming security. I’m not meaning to imply that Tulum is unsafe in general, but If i’m honest, as a first timer, I was a little concerned about security. the place feels and is secure.

3) it is the closest hotel to the little village (five minute walk), without actually being in it (it can be a little ‘active’ in that little stretch of village on the weekends). great restaurants and shops there. super vibey. we went there all the time. MATEO’s boasts (and actually has) the best fish taco’s in the world. there is a really humble restaurant across the street- it doesn’t have a name, that I could tell- you just have to sort of find it- had what my Mexican girlfriend assures me is the best, most authentic local cuisine she’s ever had. Getting her to eat anywhere else after that was nearly impossible. a couple doors down, Hotel Posada has an amazing, intimate restaurant/ beach club run by an Italian dude named Alex. Hidden Gem. Great italian food.

FOOD/ DRINKS amazing. we ate at the restaurant often. the restaurant opens up to the cove and is just a beautiful place to be. If you are staying elsewhere, at least come to this place for lunch or dinner- you won’t be disappointed.

INTERNET/ WIFI signal was pretty decent, for such a remote location. My GF could stream netflix at night.

Con’s- I personally can’t think of any, but some of the challenges for some travelers in tulum in general might be (and mind you- this will apply to 95% of the hotels down there)

-No A/C. but You’ll get over it after one night- you just keep all the doors open- the ocean breeze will do its thing, and there is just nothing like the roar of that ocean off of the rocks.

- mosquitos- their going to get in to your room- wear repellent at night. Allegedly co co water works, but we didn’t get that tip till the day we checked out and i haven’t tested that.

- the beachfront, as amazing and beautiful as it is, isn’t really good for swimming. for that, you walk 5-10 minutes south on the beach, where its more sandy under the water.

LOCAL TIPS: bring a pile of cash to spend locally, as atm’s are 50/50 at best, as are the credit card readers. Every place, big and small, that we went, accepted US dollars.

rent a car. SUV is you feeling like doing a day trip to punta allen, 90 min on a dirt road south of tulum, and worth the trip if you are in to water/ nature.

mosquito repellent!! Allegedly co co water works, but we didn’t get that tip till the day we checked out.

this area is expensive. it kind of has to be- any establishment here has to bring its own generators, fuel, water, ice, etc… its expensive to run any kind of nice place here, that isn’t straight up roughing it.

Room Tip: if you can afford the extra money- get a second story room. you will never forget the view and expe...

After attending a wedding in Playa Del Carmen, I decided to spend five days in Tulum at El Pez. This was such a beautiful place to stay and the staff were extremely friendly and accommodating, a bonus for me as a solo traveler. They helped me with tours, bike rental, airport transport, and any other needs I had. They just finished remodeling their restaurant and the new palapa is gorgeous. The food is delicious; loved the Tulum salad, tuna tartar, and coconut fish. The large rocks on the beach are nice to climb and hang out on. I will definitely visit again soon!! Thanks Orfe, Eduardo, Lina, Jose and everyone else for being amazing:)

Pros:
-The meal of the restaurant in El Pez are delicious.(but expensive, dinner main dishes MXN$225~375)
-24 hrs hot water for shower and electricity offering.
-Service is good.
-View from room is pretty.
-Relax and cozy.
-WiFi signals are good.(Cellphone signals of Telcel are weak.)

Cons:
-No A/C, even there are ceiling fan and sea-breeze I still wake up because of HOT.
-Free breakfast offer: hot coffee, tea, breads, fruits, Jam, yogurt, nuts, hams and cheese. If you wanna eat something hot meal or egg dishes, that's extra cost.(MXN$50~90)
-Water precious here, so I think for this reason I saw the water of the pool isn't really clean.

-The beach in front of El Pez is full of seaweed and rocks, bad for swimming but good for snorkeling(many fishes, crabs and etc.)
-There are mosquitos. Bring repellent.

Thank you so much for taking the time to write a review. We realize you had a choice of many Hotels and we are glad you choose to stay with us.
El Pez is situated on such a uniquely beautiful spot on the beach in Tulum. Our cove plays host to birds, crabs, fish and turtles which makes snorkeling a treat for all those that stay here. Seaweed being part of the reason we have a host of sea life.

It does get hot here in the summer months and a AC would be great at times. However, one of the things people come to Tulum for is its small boutique hotels that make you feel as though you are far away from the crowds and conveniences that the high rise all inclusive resort are known for.. We have remained this way because most hotels are still generator, wind or solar powered.
Again, part of the overall charm.
Mosquitoes too are just a part of living in a beautifully palm forested area. So yes, pack your repellent.

Thank you again for your review, We are constantly striving to be the best and reviews help make us aware of all the needs of our guest.

With warm reguards from all of us here at El Pez at Turtle Cove.

During an 8 night Tulum trip we spent 4 nights at El Pez. The bay is a beautiful and central location to discover both sides to this beautiful resort. We had one of the rooms off the main build rather than a Cabana which we felt was as good as the Cabana’s - a beautiful room with a very warm welcome from the team there.

The dining area is simply beautiful and the grounds / beach area are perfect for settling into beach life and relaxing. The food we ate was fantastic and competed well with all other places we experienced (Hard to have a bad meal in Tulum). We actually felt like we’d found a bit of an unknown treasure.

If you want to relax by a beautiful bay and watch a colony of pelicans’ fish away (we didn't see this anywhere else and you can watch them for hours) make sure you give El Pez a visit. Even if you’re not staying there it’s still worth a lunchtime or evening cocktail / diner trip just to watch the Pelicans.
