“Playa Selva”

Our family loved Playa Selva. Every experience was great - from the booking experience where I worked closely with Manuela, to meeting Pepe, the excellent and attentive manager of the lodge, to enjoying and experiencing the friendly staff, with special mention to Rafa who was always available to help us with anything we needed.

Our family was looking for a relaxing holiday on the beach in the Tulum, with the options to explore the Mayan Riviera. A place where we could unwind and unplug. Playa Selva gave us that. Our bungalow was clean and as expected. We had access to a shared kitchen - a few steps from the bungalow which was the same - clean and organized. A place where we could keep all our grocery's and drinks.

Pepe was very helpful and shared the highlights of the area and was available to take us on guided tours as needed and helped to keep us stocked with fresh ice!

Rafa sorted out our bikes on the property when we wanted to go for a bike into town and the grocery store, and prepared the fire for a BBQ our family had the one night.

If you are looking for a peaceful place to stay in Tulum, with access to the fabulous beach a few steps from the houses or bungalows, I would highly recommend Playa Selva.

I absolutely love this place!!! This was our second time at Playa Selva in Cabana Maya. The place is magical.
We arrived earlier than expected but Pepe and the staff were completely accomidating. They helped us carry our luggage and groceries to the kitchen. We stayed in Cabana Maya which was perfect. We had an extra bed and invited friends to stay a couple nights.
The beach is outstanding!! The staff will pull out mattresses and umbrellas so you can stay on the beach all day, which is what we did. Great for early morning meditation and yoga. It's also perfect for watching the stars. I've always felt very safe, day or night, on this stretch of beach.
The communal kitchen is perfect for us too. We both love to cook and always come up with great recipes with what we have available. The restaurants that are in this area are not cheap so you save lots of money. We also met lots of great people in the kitchen!!!
We will be back!!

My girlfriend and I arrived in Tulum for a 2-night romantic getaway while visiting friends in Playa del Carmen. We booked online originally at hotel Parayso, a property that I look forward to tearing to shreds in a a separate review as when we arrived, we had the pleasure of finding out that the people at Parayso booked our room to somebody else, the hotel was full, and the owner/manager was in Thailand. Lovely.

I went door to door at 5:30pm looking for a hotel and after 6 or 7 stops, came across this oasis and Pepe happened to have a room available for us by sheer coincidence. He was understanding of the situation, offered me the best price he could and we began a 3-day getaway that was unparalleled.

A couple of things to note about Playa:
1. Pepe. Probably the kindest man in Tulum. Sharp, warm, helpful and trustworthy. This man truly understands service and takes pride in running this property with such great care.

2. The decor of the homes/rooms. In a word: Perfect. White walls, semi-polished concrete floors, bright, tasteful use of color, natural wood. What else do you need?? They nailed it.

3. The staff: friendly, helpful, quiet and welcoming. They make you feel like your part of the playa selva family from the minute you arrive.

4. The guests and communal kitchen: Our house had its own kitchen but I loved making coffee in the morning in the communal kitchen at the center of the property. Great way to quietly meet fellow guests and provide that hostel-like friendliness combined with the experience of staying in a gorgeous, private eco-hotel. Agree with over reviews - do yourself a favor and stop at Chedraui on the way in to get some groceries. Not only will you save on restaurants, cooking on site will keep you on the grounds of the hotel longer. Plus, depending on the time of day you are cooking, the staff on the property will clean the dishes right after your meal!

5. Facilities: You quickly get used to the salt water thing. The beach is perfection. Don't worry at all about the neighboring "hippie" camp grounds. Super friendly people who keep to themselves and are not loud.

Cannot say enough good things about this place. We will be back again as soon as we can.

Thanks Pepe!!!

I have been visiting Tulum for the last 6 years and it was the first time we went to Playa Selva, it was our best vacation . We loved the community kitchen which enable us to meet nice people , save us from outrageous restaurant prices because we could prepare our meal . The kitchen is well equipped and clean .Plenty of spices , pots and pans .
The hotel is quaint , small and this is what so special about it . We felt like part of a family .
We were greeted with friendly smile and directed to our room which was so perfect .
I was sharing this vacation with my son and we both enjoyed our stay . This is the only hotel I would go back in Tulum and I have stayed in many . Rates are fair for the rooms .
Thank you Pepe for your kindness.

Room Tip: la Palma is located on the second floor . Good breeze and view .

When arriving at Playa Selva you know that you have stumbled into a paradise. The beach is the most beautiful spot with white sand turquoise water. The thatched roof cabanas sit right on the beach and you can hear the waves and breathe the ocean air and get the best relaxing sleep. The rooms are simple yet tastefully designed and comfortable. We have stayed in both the big house as well as La Palma and La Duna. La Playa is a lovely room on the second floor with a terrace overlooking the ocean. The house is great if you are a large crowd that needs to spread out. Unless you are a larger family, staying in one of the other bungalows is perfect because there is a communal kitchen on the property so that you can cook some meals if you need to have a change from eating out all the time. There is also a barb b que set up right next to the beach. Our family has visited Playa Selva twice and are dreaming of when we can return.

I traveled with a few friends to this magical oasis. I had a few troubles getting into the country so the staff at Playa Selva really went out of their way to make our stay perfect. The great thing about this specific location is it is pretty quiet and central to a lot of the great restaurants and bars. The rooms are clean and the beds are comfortable. I would recommend staying at the Beach house as sleeping upstairs really makes things much more peaceful. We stayed a few nights in La Duna and for two friends it was ideal. Very thankful to the kind staff, Pepe, Raffi and Manuela. We will be back again very soon

Playa Selva in general has a great atmosphere. Our room (La Palma) in particular was great for a romantic vacation next to the sea. You literally open the door (go down the stairs if you get one of the high level rooms), and you're standing on white sand, contemplating the beautiful caribbean sea.

Our room was clean and spacious, it had mosquito nets all around, and even when some bugs did manage to get in the room, the bed has an extra beautiful net around it so that sleeping was no problem at all. Since the power is provided with solar energy, there aren't those many power outlets and the lighting can be a bit dim at night. Playa Selva provides a few candles for the room, for us this only made the room more romantic. Also, there is no air conditioning in the room, but we also didn't find this to be a problem since it has several windows and a balcony with a big door, all of which could stay open at night with the mosquito nets keeping bugs outside.

A review that worried me when I was deciding whether or not to stay in Playa SelvaW mentioned the 'Camping Chavez' camp next to Playa Selva. It said that they are noisy at night and don't let Playa Selva guests sleep. I personally didn't find them to be a problem. It is true that at night they would some times play a drum and we'd hear the occasional laughter, but nothing that kept us from sleeping once we wanted to. In fact we spoke to some of the campers one afternoon and they were very nice people, and never made us feel unsafe. I can see how it could get very loud at some point, but at least for us this was absolutely no problem.

Pepe, the host/manager is a great guy, very relaxed and with the best tips to plan sightseeing. The rest of the staff is friendly and provides good service.

The kitchen is nice and clean, all power in the hotel is provided through solar energy, and running water is salty water from the sea (a bit of a shock at first, but quite easy to get used to).

As general tips:

- Tulum beaches have a very relaxed sort of hippie atmosphere, yet the prices of the surrounding restaurants are rather high. If you have a chance to stop in Chedraui (supermarket) on the way to Playa Selva, they will provide with a fridge for your food in the common kitchen.

- Playa Selva is located very close to the Tulum Ruins, yet the cost of taxis is very high even for such a short distance (something like 150-180 pesos each way). Public transportation is an option, otherwise it can be a good idea to befriend a taxi driver and get day tours around different areas for a reduced cost (for example, we booked a day with the driver for 800 pesos, including a trip to the Tulum Ruins, Cobá Ruins and Punta Laguna and then back to Playa Selva).

To foreign travelers I would add that the area is very safe, you can walk outside at night without any fear (the main street doesn't have the best lighting but you'll soon find that it's really no problem).

This is my first review in TripAdvisor, and I'm very happy to recommend Playa Selva! (I hope I don't regret it and I hope to find a way to book again next time I visit the Riviera Maya).

Room Tip: We stayed in La Palma, and it was a great choice for a romantic holiday.
