Owner description: Tulum (Spanish pronunciation: [tu'lum], Yucatec: Tulu'um) is the site of a Pre-Columbian Maya walled city serving as a major port for Coba.[1] The ruins are situated on 12-meter (39 ft) tall cliffs, along the east coast of the Yucatan Peninsula on the Caribbean Sea in the state of Quintana Roo, Mexico.[1] Tulum was one of the last cities built and inhabited by the Maya; it was at its height between the 13th and 15th centuries and managed to survive about 70 years after the Spanish began occupying Mexico. Old World diseases brought by the Spanish settlers appear to have resulted in very high fatalities, disrupting the society and eventually causing the city to be abandoned.[citation needed] One of the best-preserved coastal Maya sites, Tulum is today a popular site for tourists.[1]

Nice place. Compact & easy to walk; however, you cannot go in to the ruins. They are roped off. The beach is amazing & water is rough. Would give perfect rating if you could walk in the ruins instead of just around them.

If you are visiting the Cancun/Riviera Maya/ Playa del Carmen region you must visit Tulum. It is a breathtaking walk through history in an amazing picturesque setting. Seeing the Mayan Ruins up close and personal is a once in a lifetime experience if you are a lover of history and culture. Taking the collectivo from Playa Del Carmen is about an 1-1/2 ride, cheap and safe. Taxis are also available but it is a bit more expensive but easily can be done if you are in a group to share the costs. Once you get into Tulum avoid the pitfalls of getting a guide and just walk and take it all in. Take your bathing suits to swim at the base of the Ruins at Tulum's Beach. The white sand makes the water a milky turquoise color that is beyond words. Don't miss out on Tulum. (also there are restaurants, souvenir shops, restrooms once you are within Tulum)

I've never seen anything quite like Tulum. When we arrived at the park, we had to walk through a bit of the jungle to get to the entrance of the ruins. The cost to get in was 57 pesos/person (VERY REASONABLE). It was SUPER hot, so make sure you dress appropriately. The ruins were spectacular for sure, but the best part may have been the small beach that you can relax on and swim in the ocean. VERY beautiful and relaxing. Unfortunately we didn't bring our swimming gear with us, so we didn't get in the water. Make sure if you go to Tulum that you bring your swimming gear because EVERYONE in the water seemed to be having a blast. This is a MUST DO in my opinion if you're staying in the Akumal area!
