“Great place to stay”
Reviewed 12 September 2013

Were staying in a 6 bed dorm with enough space for our things and wide beds, mattresses a bit worn in the middle but big enough to find yourself a good spot. Spacious bathroom per dorm. Big and clean kitchen - one of the best I've come across. Free water and breakfast - just coffee and cereal but always a plus. Haven't swam in the pool yet as there's been rain but it's a great addition and looks clean. Very helpful and friendly staff, beautiful decor, all round lovely place to be.

We were so impressed with this hostel! Large comfy double beds -we wanted to stay here longer!
You can get to the ruins and the beach easily on a bike (rent nextdoor) if you get a free map from the hostel and ask for directions.

The only downside was that you can't cook meat in the kitchen maybe if we had stayed longer this would have bothered us but as we only had 3 nights we just bought cooked meat from the supermarket across the road.

We got a deal from Facebook for 3 nights for the price of 2! Even better! So impressed we will come back to see that beautiful tulum beach one more time

This was a bit of an odd one. On first sights quite a decent looking hostel. Nice big beds (can comfortably sleep with a partner and save money), big lockers each, and decent bathroom. Big kitchen to cook meals on (only vegetarian) and v close to 2 supermarkets, so eating is cheap! Nice communal area with pool downstairs too.

Dislikes- Air con only 9pm to 9am. At night time this is perfect, but if you want to chill during the day you´ll be hot.
-The bed was big, but was probably the worst nights sleep I´ve ever had. The mattress was made out of some memory foam thing, making sleeping confusingly difficult.
-Massive bar upstairs, but was never open or used. A lot of empty wasted space that could be very cool and social if used well.
-located between beach and main st, which is a nice balance, but makes getting to the beach a bit of a mission. We hired bikes thinking itd be a couple of minutes riding, but took us about 25 minutes.

All in all, nice cheap place to stay if you get a decent bed and dont mind cycling.

Room Tip: I slept in 2 different rooms and one bed was better than the other, so maybe feel the beds first to...

Large room with two double bed, noisy but effective air con, good location for ruins, beach and town. Bonus- it has a pool! Staff were friendly and helpful and a basic breakfast was provided. Would definitely stay here again.

I was planning on staying here for 3 nights and ended up staying for 6. My bed was massive and comfy (they let you share a bed so if you are with a friend or a couple it’s much cheaper!) and the room was always clean stayed cool even though the air-con was only on at night. The shower was huge and always had constant hot water. Breakfast is simple but nice with cereals and coffee/tea and there is good Wi-Fi

The pool was empty the first 2 days I was there, but after a bit of persuasion, they filled it up. It was great to cool off in during the day and sit with your feet dipped in with a beer in hand in the evening. They even provided rubber rings! The staff were excellent and very helpful and happy to drink with you! They recommended that a group of us hired a car for a day so we could drive to the cenotes (caves) and to a lagoon. They also recommended great snorkeling and diving locations. They even let me use their phone so I could book a flight to Mexico City

The location of the hostel is a bit out of the way of the center of town (10-20 minute walk), but there is a supermarket just across the road and it is in the perfect location to hitchhike to the beach. Just stick out your thumb and go to whatever beach they are driving too! If you don’t fancy hitchhiking, a taxi is cheap if there are a few of you in it.

The kitchen area is brilliant. They have a lot of communal food left over by other guests, which you can use so check what they have before buying ingredients! You can’t cook meat but they don’t have a problem with adding pre-cooked meat like ham or prawns to your meal.

What made my stay at this hostel really special were the amazing travellers I met there. We formed a great group of friends and it was sad to leave them at the end of the week. I highly recommend this hostel if you’re staying in Tulum!

Chalupa is a great little hostel, right on the road to the beach in Tulum but a little walk to Tulum center (15-20 mins). It is clean and the dorms are nice and large. I was in a dorm for 4 ppl and the beds were actually double beds. Great place for vegetarians since they advise everyone there that no meat can be cooked in the kitchen. The kitchen is well equiped in case you want to prepare your own meals. I would recommend it to anyone!

I only stayed for a couple of nights here. I wasn't given much info on the hostel from staff and struggled to get any info on surrounding areas. I did however really like the atmosphere on the roof in the evenings watching films. The owner was a great guy and really laid back. I wanted to stay for a few more nights as it was cheap but there wasn't room. I didn't really like the location as the walk to ADO was a bit too far and the staff didn't really help me which is why I wouldn't rate this higher.
