“Paradise in the Yucatan”
Reviewed 21 May 2013

If I could give more stars I would. I LOVE Rosa Del Viento. I came here with my daughter to celebrate my 60th birthday. She stayed 5 days, I stayed for 10 but could have easily spent 2 weeks or more here. I have been to the Yucatan probably 8 times since 1988 and have stayed in several places, all at least 1 hr. south of Cancun because I like the less inhabited areas. Rosa del Viento is the tops. It is calm, peaceful and extremely beautiful. There are no big hotels in the area, and you can walk forever on the beach, north or south, and feel very relaxed. The STAFF is truly AMAZING!!! Such lovely people! Right from the moment we arrived, the experience felt very personal...like a family, and everyone works to make you feel comfortable and welcome. Eliana & Mitzin treated us like queens. The waiters were ALL warm, friendly, and fun. The housekeepers as well were all so kind. The FOOD was great! Wonderful pizzas, lobster, pastas. And I love that the restaurant is open to the ocean view. Breakfast by the ocean is heaven on earth. The ROOM (#1) was always clean and comfortable, and surrounded on 3 sides with windows to the ocean view...plus a sliding glass door. Even though there were people upstairs, the sound did not penetrate the floor. I slept like a rock and the sun rose directly in front of the room (February). I swam every day in the ocean, literally a few steps from my front door!!! And when the ocean is having a rough day, there is a cenote right across the road (literally 1 minute) from Rosa del Viento where you can take a quiet swim with no waves, in cool, clear blue water. Bring your snorkel. The Sian Ka'an preserve is very close by & the hotel will arrange a guide to take you into the preserve. I recommend Green Bird Tours. Owner Rene lives in the preserve and can show you all of its secrets. Rosa del Viento has it ALL! Location, food, beauty, comfort, great staff. I absolutely love it here and look forward to coming again and again. I wish I was there right now!!! What a lovely, lovely place.

Room Tip: I stayed in room #1. It was perfect. I liked it because it seemed to be the most private.

My friend and I just returned from a 9 night stay at Rosa del Viento and we loved this hotel! Both of us said we would return again and think its good for couples or groups/families.

The staff were helpful and friendly, beach & restaurant service excellent & quick, the food delicious and menu extensive, the focus being Mexican and Italian food. The reception area and our room were charming, tastefully & sympathetically decorated and very clean and comfortable (our room was also spacious - massive king-size bed and 2 extra singles). Because there is a good breeze (especially at night - hence the "Viento") and the balcony door had a fly screen, we only used the overhead fan but there is AC available, and the electricity only went off on two occasions, both at night for less than an hour which wasn't a problem. Even though our room was above reception we found it very quiet. Our room was also equipped with a safe, bath-robes and a balcony with seats and hammock, with sea view.

As regards the hotel's location, is it at the far end of the Tulum beach, about 6k from the livelier end of town, very near the Sian Kia'an biosphere reserve. The upside of this is that it is near to the reserve for the various sporting/animal watching activities you can do there. Also, having walked the whole length of the Tulum beach (and seen most of the hotels) we thought this was the nicest beach-front with very little seaweed and with welcome shade from palm trees on the beach (in addition to the palm-umbrellas), and a nice beach view restaurant (shady & sunny seating available).

The downside is that if you want lively bar scene (at the other end of the beach or Tulum town itself) its a little further to travel. We either booked or hailed taxis on the road (this is about $10 each way). But we also cycled & walked to the local restaurants (Casa Banana was amazing) and other hotel bars.

We found the kitesurfers considerate to swimmers and actually fun to watch them do flips!

Only specific tip - you definitely need a torch as the roads and beaches are not lit up at night, so pitch black from 8pm - we found iphone torch app was fine for this purpose. But this applies to any Tulum hotel.

Room Tip: Ask for sea-view - cool breeze makes for a better night's sleep.

We stayed one night las sunday. The room was given to us a little bit late because they had a wedding the night before. The beach is great and the food is good. The service feels under staffed but I want to thinks that this was due to the weeding the night before. I would come back on a heat bet due to the great beach they have.

Been there in March 2013. The hotel is very nice. Rooms are big and clean. Service is lazy, but doable. Private beach with all hammocks and beach beds.
Breakfast just ok, service in restaurant is very slow.
Wi-fi in the rooms.
One of last hotels in Tulum hotels line. About 4-6 km to action. Small parking.
Next time will choose hotel closer to action

We did not stay at Rosa del Viento, but we did eat there daily for over five days (and were staying next door at Ixchel) so we are able to provide some highlights of the hotel:

The Good:
- The food was excellent except for a few exceptions listed below
- The waiters were all extremely warm, accommodating and professional… in our opinion the best feature of the hotel/restaurant
- The location was great: it is on the best part of Tulum beach

The not so good:
- The food took a very long time to arrive (min 30 – 40 min for lunch/dinner once it took one hour)
- The woodstove oven was not functioning, so no pizza
- Their Gelato was definitely not Italian! It was more like every day ice cream.
- The French toast was made with every day supermarket sliced bread instead of something thicker like French bread or challah bread (ironically when we requested toast with our omelet it came with toasted French bread which was thick and hard and could be used for French toast)
- The omelets were laughable – basically an egg taco; the peppers, tomatoes, and ham were not cooked with the eggs and just added at the end. The result was a soft taco with a crunchy center.
-Fruit plates: beautiful presentation but with an aftertaste of onion/garlic! (Note to hotel: use cutting board & knife dedicated to fruits only)

The Bad:
- The hotel has so many rooms and the beach is packed with beach chairs and umbrellas. This hotel seemed like it was like a continuation of one of the mega-hotels of Cancun.
- The hotel lacks the charm of the traditional thatched cabañas typical of Tulum
- The manager/owner had an air of arrogance about him
- Many children (including those of the manager/owner- we think) were disruptive during mealtimes.
-Music playing in the restaurant. This is Tulum not Cancun; in Tulum music the sound of the waves crashing and the birds singing is the best music.

The Abysmal:
- There is a windsurfing school right next to the hotel. This might be fun to watch at a distance but you can be sure that the entertainment value declines rapidly as they are whooshing past while you are in the water.
- On the street sign of the hotel they indicate that they cater weddings. This in itself is not bad unless the hotel has 24 hours of electricity with sufficient wattage to power the speakers and lights to illuminate the drinks for the loudly laughing wedding guests until after 3 in the morning. We heard all this staying next door at Ixchel, so we especially pitied those guests at Rosa del Viento who were not involved in the wedding. This happened over two nights, however we fled to another resort before the second night of wedding festivities.
- How does this compare to weddings in the more “Tulum”-like hotels? Almost the same except the power goes out at around 11, the guests not involved in wedding hear the waves crashing and the distant laughing of a few wedding guests skinny-dipping under a million stars (stars made visible thanks to the lack of artificial light).

In summary, if you wish to drive an extra hour and half and probably spend more to have the Cancun experience this is the hotel for you. However, if you want to get away from it all or spend some quite romantic time with someone you love, stay away except for the occasional meal. We give two stars to this hotel only because of the generally good food from Rosa del Viento and fantastic servers.

Saludos!

very nice small clean hotel with familiar atmosphere and good service
beach is very very beautiful, very less people (last hotel to sian kaán)
very windy and funny waves in march
price performance ratio is ok but high like everything in tulum

first advice: take a torch/reading lamp with you (the small light in the room is too dark for reading and if you walk on the street there is no light

second advice: if you want to leave the hotel: rent a car (there are many nice restaurants along the beach and in tulum city but they are all too far to walk)

Just returned from an 8 night vacation on the Tulum beach with our 4 last nights at this nice hotel. Nice rooms, clean, comfortable bed, great water pressure and amazing views. As well as a substantial breakfast. All staff seemed to go above and beyond. Friendly and genuine. The beach is awesome. Coming home to snow and -20 C last night, I wish I was back in Tulum and no where better than Rosa Del Viento!
