With the wealth of experiences we had at La Zebra Tulum, I don't know where to start - perhaps with January 2011, when my husband and I flew down to Mexico to meet Lina: event/wedding coordinator, chef, and soul of La Zebra. We sat down in the beachfront, thatched roof restaurant which houses an enormous manually operated sugar cane juicer. Lina ordered us their special house drink - mojitos with freshly squeezed sugar cane juice - super yummy (they also have a passion fruit variation that became my absolute fav!). We planned pretty much our entire wedding in 2 hours (and a few mojitos later;-), which was to take place in October 2011. After this, Lina and also her front desk staff (especially Hernan) were super responsive to every single email, idea, request etc. We never got "no" for an answer.
Once we and our nearly 40 guests (we had booked the entire property for 4 nights) arrived, we were all greeted like friends. Lina organized a salsa lesson for everyone the evening before the wedding (this was our "meet & greet" night, as many guests did not know each other) and it was a huge hit with everyone - lots of fun! The wedding day itself was nothing short of magical - we had a simple bamboo arch set up (with mic to speak over the waves) right on the beach and wooden benches, where we performed our own ceremony. All this can be as elaborate or simple as the individual couple wants - Lina can make pretty much anything happen!
Food & Drink
Lina prides herself in serving up authentic Mexican dishes, not only Yucatecan specialties, but also other typical Mexican foods. We tried to try every single dish on the menu in our week there (didn't quite get there, but close!) and one was better than the other! One of my personal favourites was the Mayan Firestone Soup! Breakfast is amazing, with fresh homemade bread and jams, yummy egg concoctions and fresh fruit. Also, an absolute must-have: their freshly squeezed orange juice - there's no going back to Tropicana after this...
Drinks are served up at their funky bar, and on Salsa night as well as if you have a wedding with a larger group, down at their rustic beach bar. Cocktails are really tasty, they have quite a few concoctions. Personal fav was the passion fruit mojito. They use a lot of fresh fruit in their drinks which give them such an awesome taste. I can't comment too much on the tequila as I'm not a big tequila drinker, but from what I saw, they have quite the assortment. A tequila connaisseur will not leave disappointed!
The cabanas are all beautifully appointed and have everything one needs. If you need air conditioning and TV this is not the right place for you. The beauty and appeal of Tulum is exactly that these things are missing. The beds are super comfy, the rooms very clean and ceiling fans and the ocean breeze give you all the cooling you need at night (we actually had to turn off the fans sometimes because it was too cool!). Staying here makes you feel a little more connected to your natural surroundings because of the absence of technology in the rooms (wifi is reliably available in the restaurant area). All of this being said, the rooms are gorgeous (especially the Master Suite Cabana 1 and the Beach shack where we stayed) and fresh coffee and OJ are brought to your door each morning to be consumed even before breakfast on the patio (I don't know if this is the case for all room types, but because we stayed in the beach shack, this was our morning routine).
The staff was nothing short of amazing - Berza, Fily were our servers for most of our stay and didn't leave a wish unfulfilled. Hernan, the concierge, was so patient with our continuous booking changes;-) and made everything run super smoothly! Thank you from all of us for all of your and your team's hard work to make our stay so unforgettable!!
So, all this said, I was depressed for 2 weeks after returning home after such a great vacation. We came as regular guests and left as friends. We already have our anniversary trip planned for next October. We wouldn't even consider staying at another property in Tulum than La Zebra!
