“Nice but a bit overrated”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 2 February 2014

The hotel is really more like a B&B but with more rooms than a typical hotel and, in my experience, B&B owners are usually very helpful. Tom is similarly helpful and clearly cares about the place, though he can get unnecessarily defensive if something is questioned (hence 3 rather than 4 stars). Good location and very good value, but not extraordinary (the top Tulum area B&Bs are excellent).

I stayed at Posada de la Luna for two days in November 2013 as part of my sister's wedding. I had a fantastic stay there. The prices are affordable and it's great to actually stay in town where you get to interact with the locals, eat in local restaurants and get a feel for Mexico (as opposed to all those people who stay in those all-inclusive resorts, which isn't really visiting Mexico - you might as well go to Florida).

The accommodations are simple, but you aren't in Tulum to spend all day in your room. But the beds are comfortable and the rooms are neat.

There is a fantastic rooftop deck which has a great view of Tulum. It's a great area to relax full of comfortable chairs and couches. There is also free WiFi that comes complementary. Additionally, the breakfast they serve is phenomenal complete with fresh fruit and juices, coffee, etc. and local Mexican specialties.

The owner, Tom, makes all his guests feel welcome. One morning he greeted us at breakfast and made sure we were enjoying ourselves, informed us all about the local history of the area, and gave us plenty of tourism suggestions such as info on local beaches and restaurants.

The only thing to keep in mind is that there's no sign to find it from the main road as you drive in. I came in at night and I had a little trouble finding the place.

Nevertheless, I would definitely recommend it.

My husband and I got married a little over a year ago and we had been saving for a honeymoon. It took us months to figure out where we wanted to go. Did we want to go to an all-inclusive? Did we want to go on adventures or did we want to just lounge around on the beach - or, maybe do a little of both? In the end, we decided we wanted to have some adventures and some beach time, while not completely breaking the bank, so we chose Tulum and Posada Luna del Sur. And I'm so glad we did; it was an absolutely amazing honeymoon and we hope to return one day.

Here are some of the major highlights and why we loved Posada Luna del Sur so much:

1) The owner, Tom, is amazing. He really goes above and beyond to make sure his guests feel welcomed and he's happy to assist with any questions you may have. Tom made sure to stop by and speak with us just about every morning while we were eating breakfast. After Tom found out that my husband and I were on our belated honeymoon, he and his staff went out of their way and adorned our bed with rose petals, a bottle of wine, and a sign that wished us a happy honeymoon. It was so sweet and my husband and I were very touched by the kind gesture.

2) The detailed map of Tulum that Tom provides is very useful. We used that map on a daily basis and we went to various restaurants and sites. Some of them (very few) are noted as being touristy, while others (most) are noted as being popular among the locals. We mostly went to places that were popular with the locals, but we did some touristy things that were equally amazing (i.e. the free salsa lessons on Sunday nights at La Zebra is definitely worth your while. It's full of tourists, obviously, but we had such a fun time and I'd strongly recommend it).

3) Tom helped us arrange a taxi for the day to go to Chichen Itza and Cobá and because the taxi driver was friends with Tom, we got a great deal.

4) We also went on a day-long excursion with Jessica and Antonio, during which we went snorkeling in the ocean and in two different cenotes. That was also amazing and arranged through Tom.

5) Breakfast on the rooftop was another highlight of the trip. The food was absolutely delicious and my husband and I still talk about/crave it to this day!

6) The room was very clean and we loved the towel "creatures" that were left for us every day.

Overall, my husband and I can't say enough positive things about this hotel, Tulum, and our overall experience. Please note that Tulum is still a developing town and to me, that was one of the most charming things about it. I loved that it wasn't overrun with tourists and there were plenty of opportunities to explore on our own and get to know more about the local culture. It's a small, low-key town, and yes, you do have to take taxis or rent a bike to get to the beach from the hotel, but the distance is short and the taxis aren't too expensive (& Tom gave us estimates for how much different taxi rides would be, which was extremely helpful). My husband and I loved being in the center of town, we always felt safe, and we enjoyed our nightly walks through the town to explore and see what was going on. We loved the vibe of Tulum (very relaxing and right up our alley) and it was everything we were looking for, but it might not be for you if you are used to bigger, more developed cities with more night life. If that's more your style (which is perfectly fine), I'd suggest staying in Cancun or Playa del Carmen and then taking a day trip to Tulum (at the very least, the Tulum ruins should not be missed!).

Hola amigos,

We LOVE hosting honeymoons! This year we are thrilled to announce we won the ¨Most Romantic¨ award from Trip Advisor. Our little Posada is indeed very cozy and romantic. Gabriella, our house keeper is a pro with over 15 years of experience, she LOVES setting up rose beds and is very talented at this art.

I am very blessed that you chose our hotel and the beautiful town of Tulum for your honeymoon. Thank you for your review and I hope you guys can visit again for your anniversary! :)

Good luck love birds <3 and for now, bueno suerte!

Tom

Selfishly I would love it if no one knew how great this gem of a hotel is. It does not look like much from the street but the minute you step inside you will notice all of the little details that go into making this hotel a sweet place. The owner, Tom, adds to the charm by assisting with booking tours; getting you to and from the airport; arranging for breakfast in your room if you have an early morning tour; and being the consummate host. Being located in town offers one the choice of restaurants, shops and live music. The beach is a short taxi ride away. As an older woman traveler, I always feel very safe in this hotel and with all of Tom's recommendations. I have stayed here several times and every time it gets better and better reflecting Tom's commitment to constant improvement. If there was a way to rate this 5+ I would. It is truly an outstanding hotel combined with being a great value.

Room Tip: They are all great.

Nice and cheap posada on edge of city centre. Hotels at Tulum beach lack the bigger choice of nearby restaurants and bars and are more expensive. And the owner Tom is great with information about beaches, trips and restaurants.

A nice little place in the town, we enjoyed our visit there. I agree with all the other stuff written here about Toms help and great inside information about the area, was super nice and helpful. Take under consideration that the place is far from the beach so a bike or a car is kind of necessary. Btw, we had much better breakfasts elsewhere.
Anyway thanks Tom :)

Posada is a lovely place to stay in Tulum pueblo for many reasons: it's charming; off the main drag, so quieter; has great breakfasts on a rooftop patio; is clean and comfortable; and surprises you with clean towels twisted into fun animals and characters. But, the best reason to stay is the owner, Tom, who is a wealth of advice and will do everything to help you figure what to do while you're there.
