My wife and I were looking for a hotel that met several criteria for our 3 day getaway from our kids during Spring Break. In Posada luna del Sur we found it all.

Cost - radically cheaper than both hotels along the beach and in town.

Location - around the corner from the main strip and within walking distance of several breakfast, lunch, and dinner restaturants; shops; the ADO bus station; 24 hour pharmacy; a mini-market, and even the Catholic church in town.

Amenities- we weren't looking for a spa, but we did want a room that was clean, beautiful, and well arraigned. There was a sitting area, small kitchenette with a coffee pot and mini fridge, a king-sized bed, and a walk-in shower with its own hot water heater. The balcony overlooked a beautifully landscaped courtyard area. We paid the small fee for clean drinking water and wifi and found the wifi reliable from our rooms and the rooftop patio and the clean water plentiful.

Concierge - Tom acted as a concierge for us the morning after we arrived. As suggested on trip advisor, we went up to his office on the third floor and met with him for at least 20 minutes. He gave us an annotated map of Tulum he had created, and circled several spots along the beach, in town, and up and along the coast according to our preferences. This personalized attention completely MADE THE TRIP! He booked a reservation for taxis to the airport, for Akumal to snorkel with the turtles, and for dinner at a gourmet restaurant named Cetli (delicious!); gave us several restaurant suggestions based on our preferences; rattled off his three favorite beach spots, and was helpful in helping us diagnose possible ATM issues later in the week.

I cannot say enough how helpful Tom was and how his personalized advice made our trip the fabulous stay it was.

OVERALL - if you are a couple wanting to save money by not getting a hotel on the beach and you value an ex-pat's advice on the best local food, best places to avoid, best times to visit, and best things to do, then should immediately book with Tom. We have no regrets and plan on booking in the future with him should we return.

Room tip: 2nd floor offered the best view from the balcony

In Tulum, we stayed at Posada Luna del Sur, a nice hotel just off of the main street. It is hard to find as it doesn’t look like a hotel from the outside….more like an apartment complex. The hotel sign is very small and there is no ground floor lobby. We were met by the security guard as we approached the lock gate to the complex and given our key after finding our name on a list. Our ground floor room was beautiful and large with it’s own garden and small kitchen area with a counter, sink and refrigerator. It also had a small sitting area with two built in love seats. It comes with the regular amenities, cable TV, safe and ample closets. They serve a nice continental breakfast on the roof garden. It is perfectly secure as they give you a key to the gate and the room door is dead bolted as well. The location is not bad and it is a 10 min walk to the ADO bus station.

Room tip: Ground floors have a garden

I've now stayed at this hotel twice in the past two years and I absolutely love it! The staff are all very accommodating and friendly. Very clean and quiet with a lovely rooftop patio on which they serve a continental style breakfast included in the price per night. It is located in the town of Tulum near all the bars, restaurants and shops. To get to the beach it's either a 5min cab (which costs about 5$ Canadian) or you can rent bikes across the street and bike over which takes about 20min and is super fun! I plan on returning to Tulum next winter and every winter that follows & I will always stay at this hotel!

Communication from the first enquiry to organising our taxi to the airport, was particularly efficient. Tom was a perfect welcoming host, helping with local information, advice on trips etc. This was all current and across all types of cafes, bars, stalls up to high end restaurants and trips. This information led us to have a particularly enjoyable time in Tulum.

This beautiful little hotel is in town and a half a block from the main street. There are many places to eat nearby. The rooftop deck is very nice. It is a way to visit Tulum while avoiding the several hundred dollars a night to be on the beach. TripAdvisor (a source we found to often be unreliable on this trip) says that the Posada offers free internet and a restaurant. It has neither. There is a one time reasonable fee for Internet, purified water and in-room coffee and a separate fee for any one of these. There is a free breakfast. The owner says he has tried for a year to correct the TripAdvisor information, but has been unsuccessful. Our room had a fridge. A microwave would have been nice. The kitchenette is not equipped for cooking or heating anything. The owner, Tom, will work hard to make sure your stay is pleasurable.
