This hotel has lovely gardens with hammocks...a little oasis of tranquility from which to explore a vibrant town. If you have a car, you can easily stay here at night and spend the day at the beach location for the best of both worlds. A hammock in the room made a great diversion for the children, as did the swan or flower folded towels. Bring mosquito repellent, this is the jungle..

When choosing our vacation destination my adult daughter and I had only a few requirements - close to Mayan ruins, close to cenotes, close to biosphere, off the beaten path, in the "real" Mexico (read: "NOT Cancun"), not running over with the typical tourist frou-frou. Don Diego was PERFECT for us. The hotel is clean, small, and quiet -(don't let the short drive down a dirt drive from the main highway - put you off- there are a few locals living on this street and their homes are "basic"). Once at Don Diego you will find the staff are friendly and wanting to make sure you are happy (OLA, Juan Carlos!) and the rooms are delightful - my daughter particularly loved the hammock and I loved the skylight in the shower ( The water is hot and plentiful). Electricity is 24 hours - not all areas of Tulum have this. The beds were very comfortable and extra pillows and blankets were in the room if we had needed them. The pool is cleaned every day and is refreshing to take a dip in after a day of touring the ruins. We had our "Thanksgiving" dinner at the on-site restaurant - escargot, margaritas, a "Mayan Platter", and Chocolate Mousse- and it was delicious. Juan Carlos was doing multiple duty during our stay (front desk, bartender, waiter, concierge - he arranged our tour to Chichen Itza and it was excellent). Also wonderful service and friendly attention from Charles and Stephan, co-owners of Don Diego. Breakfast each morning is included in the daily rate - consisting of freshly squeezed juice, toasted bread, fruit, pastry, fresh butter, jam or preserves. The coffee is served with a dark raw sugar - which was delicious. If you want to pay a little extra - there are hot breakfast options (eggs and such) to choose from. The continental breakfast was PLENTY to keep us going - it was perfect for us. Some other reviewers have commented negatively on the walk into town. My daughter and I found it to be perfectly safe, day or night, and we did not feel threatened by either the local populace or by the traffic. Yes, you walk either on, or just off the shoulder so, you do need to be aware. We also took taxis (to the center of town to meet our ChichenItza tour van, to the Tulum ruins, to Hidden Worlds Cenote Park, and to Don Diego's beach site- "Don Diego de la Playa")...which are easily hailed down at the end of the dirt road once you get to the highway. The rates are reasonable - just ask the going rate from one of the staff at Don Diego and make sure you ask the driver BEFORE you take off.
Don Diego de la Selva does not have TVs or clock radios provided (no need for us!). If you need ALL the "comforts of home" - then Don Diego may not be for you. If you want a duplication of a five-star snobby resort in your home country - well, then Don Diego may not be for you. We were very pleasantly surprised to see that a hair dryer IS provided in the room- as were soap, shampoo, and conditioner! Unexpected surprise!
There ARE geckos on the property - they are more afraid of humans than we are of them- no worries!
Yes, in keeping with the efforts at conservation of natural resources - you are requested to put your used toilet paper in the wastebasket and not in the toilet - this is true of EVERYWHERE we went in Quintano Roo (except Cancun). If this puts you off - you should not plan to go to the "real" Yucatan.
Room for improvement - the "garden" at the back of the property could use some more attention---but, that is VERY minor.
We LOVED Don Diego...oh, and I think I may have said this before, "Don Diego de la Selva was Perfect for Us"!!

This is a very attractive hotel with beautiful decor and gardens. The rooms were clean and simple with traditional touches and a great skylight in the bathroom. We had our own porch and hammock and the pool and restaurant just steps away. The owners of this hotel were very nice and accommodating as well as their staff.

Sadly the weather while we were in Tulum was rain rain rain but the hotel offered us a nice reprieve and a place to stay that was comfortable, quiet and relaxing. The prices here are great as well as the location (short distance to the beach).

I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone who chooses to travel simply and doesn't require the amenities and frills of a resort-like hotel (altho the restaurant is quite gourmet).

I stayed here with my two sons, 8 and 15. We stayed in a thatch roof 'cabin' (I forget what it was called) in their town location. They also have a location on the beach with more rustic accommodation. The room was spacious and comfortable with a private bath and ceiling fan. My kids were a little taken aback at first that lizards could crawl in through the thatch, but they got used to it! They also have more conventional rooms. We really enjoyed the breakfast - bread with good jam, a different fresh fruit and pastry each day, along with fresh squeezed juice and good coffee. You can order hot food for an extra fee. The restaurant serves dinner and you should definitely try it - we found it to be the tastiest food in Tulum. The pool is great and never crowded, and you can get drinks or fresh juices to enjoy poolside. The staff were wonderful. They were very friendly and helpful in setting up tours, getting directions, making recommendations. We recommend this place highly.

We stayed at don diego de la selva for 4 nights in a bungalow with no A|C. For us it was absolutely perfect.... The staff is very nice (merci beaucoup Jean-Charles, Gabriella et Charles) .

The food is exquisite, especially the steak marinated in papaya juice. Of course it is a little more expensive than what you would pay at a restaurant in Tullum, but the quality makes up for the prices. I enjoyed their french breakfast (fresh fruit and orange juice, coffee, bread and marmalade and homemade pastry), it perfect after a week of eating mexican breakfast ....

It really was a pleasure to stay there and enjoy a little bit of luxury, calm, sun and pool...

I wouldn't recommand to stay on the beach in the tents, they are really hot (there is a fan but no electricity after 10 pm) and you kinda feel trap because of the height. I stayed in a much better cabanas for a lot cheaper on Tullum beach. But their beach is beautiful!!

I would recommend Don Diego de La SELVA anytime....

Don Diego de la Selva, which is Zorro of the forest (Don Diego was Zorro's real name). We stayed at the Tulum Village 10 room hotel, not at their beach location (Don Diego de la Playa). We loved the rooms and the feel of being surrounded in our own private garden. Each room has its own patio. We ate at the on site restaurant and bar a couple of times and were not disappointed. The included breakfast was simple and delicious, fresh bakery goods as well as fresh fruit and coffee, you could order anything you wanted for an additional charge.

Don’t worry when you are driving down the dirt road to the hotel, its a block off the main road and kind of feels like you aren't going anywhere but their place is very nice. They are on the South side end of Tulum. Once inside, the garden feeling of the pool and courtyard make you feel right at home in a tropical setting. We also liked the fact that they have a second (more rustic accommodations) hotel site on the beach. If you are staying in Tulum you are free to use their beach facilities which are on a relatively quiet section of beach (not like the Zama's stretch) right next door to the Hemingway. They had lounge chairs, beach side cabana that served drinks and barbecued food and toilet/shower facilities. We found that using their beach facilities was much more more comfortable than feeling like you are "crashing" someone else's beach. We had a rental car and drove to the beach but there was a couple who rented bikes and rode to the beach. Seemed like it was around 5 miles or so. Kind of a long bike ride in the heat and the beach road is narrow and does not have a safe shoulder to ride a bike on.

One note: If you are staying during festival…(approx. 2 weeks prior to March 21) make sure you have ear plugs to sleep with. If the wind is blowing from the East the festival music in town (1/4 mile, 1/2 km away) was quite loud, it started at midnight and ended at 4:00 a.m. No way could you sleep through unless you had ear plugs. Each room has hairdryers. Their website is built entirely with Flash Player :-(way too much fancy smancy web crap) so it was a little hard to find using the Googalator. Here they are - www.dtulum.com/swf/english.swf

Tulum, more specifically the beaches of Tulum, have become the place where we leave our hearts every time we depart. We have stayed in the area many times and know that when we need a clean dependable friendly "home"...Don Diego de la Silva is the place to go. I hesitate to write this review because since the first time we've stayed there years ago, it seems to get more difficult to get rooms. We travel very open ended and like to be able to call when we do arrive in town. The last few times we've tried to stay here they've been booked. We've also stayed in their bungaloes on the beach. Also perfect if that's what you're looking for. The cabanas are actually tents that were imported from Morocco. The beds are elevated and it's incredibly sweet to be able to walk barefooted to the gorgeous shoreline, for the simple life!
