This was our first trip to Mexico with our toddler. My husband and I spent alot of time choosing a resort as we both dive and we wanted to be near the cenotes/sea.
On arrival we were NOT offered any welcome drink or refreshing towels, after a 5 hour drive to the airport, 3 hours waiting at the airport, 11 hour flight then a further couple of hours to Tulum this would have been a nice touch and a standard at a 5* hotel I would have thought.
We were soon checked in an offered an upgrade for $50 per night, we declined. We turned away from the desk and boom there was the timeshare guy, on reading previous reviews we politely told him we had no interest and we were not bothered again for the rest of the holiday.
We were soon within our room with was a standard garden view, room 4207. It had a slight musty smell on entering but I think this was the A/C as we turned that off straight away for the rest of the trip and the smell went. The room was lovely and well laid out but I was very dissapointed there was no bed provided for our toddler, we had paid nearly as much for her as we did for ourselves and sharing a bed, albeit a rather large one for 2 weeks was not the best arrangement.
The room was cleaned daily between 4 and 5 pm, rather late I felt as most of the time when the cleaner called our daughter was trying to nap, maybe this was done on purpose? When the room was cleaned it was alway done lovely. We only recieved turndown service 2 time in the 14 nights we were there, again this should have been done every night as standard.
Food in the ala cartes was lovely, our favourite was the Hitsumi with the French a close second. I personally found the buffet food selection dire and service for water/coffee very slow so after a few days we had room service for breakfast, something our 3 year old adored.
A couple of times there was a gala event on the beach either a barbque or mexican night in the plaza, we went once but the selection again was limited for our daughter and the light was so poor ( I like to see that my food is cooked correctly before consuming) we walked away and dined in the ala cartes.
The big bonus at the resort for us was the Coco Cafe, how lovely to have a place to get freshly made coffees and cakes. We just wished it opened a bit earlier, there were a few people wondering around early with no place to get coffees from.
The smoothies bar was also a lovely addition.
The beach and pool were also kept spotless but we found drinks service around here very slow.
Our daughter adored the Paint a Pot hut on the beach and made several lovely items for a resonable price.
The entertainment team were lovely and very friendly, not really my taste but my husband enjoyed the stretching class and pool games. A special mention to Juavez(Chuck), who made a real fuss of our daughter.
The Explorers club and the girls were AMAZING. Probably as a parent the best thing about the resort. We had no intention of our daughter using it but after she had met the girls there was no stopping her and she asked to go and went for a couple hours every day. Coral came out with lovely braclets and hats and drawings she had done, special mention to Ana and Bernice and Marianna whom were most enthusiastic and fun to be around.
My husband and I planned to both dive on the trip and I spent some time on the internet before travel locating a GOOD dive company, We are both instructors. On arrival we went to browse the hotel dive shop as I could find very little info on them before we travelled. On the surface they seemed very nice but when there found out we had a three year old with us their attitude changed and we were told to "ditch the kid" not really what I would have expected to hear. Instead we dove as planned with La Calypso in Tulum. We caught the local collectivo but there for 30 pesos and had the most amazing dives and attention with them. They even sourced and helped with a nanny for childcare for our daughter. I'm guessing the great personal service La Calypso give and that they are a fraction of the cost of resorts dive shop is the reason why they are the number 1 in Tulum. So divers, if you want to dive with a professional dive shop choose La Calypso.
The hotel grounds are kept spotless and the gardners do an amazing job. I personally thought the resort was quite small compared to other AI I have visited in Cuba, DR, Antigua and the Med, Europe.
We used the hotel gym which I have to say was rather large for a resort this size, althought it was a bit on the warm side and the A/C could be improved in there.
We will probably return to the Dreams chain again as we all had an amazing 2 weeks.
