great location, vibe, look, feel. cute bungalows right on the beach. friendly, helpful staff. a bit on the expensive side when you consider the lack of electrical outlets in the rooms, shower water pressure, electricity before 5 pm and after midnight, and the included breakfast that consists only of fruit, tea, and a small portion of yogurt and muesli. but in terms of beauty, romance, pure air, fresh breezes, and proximity to everything cool in tulum, this place is totally awesome. i'd go back for sure.

Posada Lamar is a lovely, romantic place to stay right on Tulum beach. The cabins are lovely and staff really helpful and friendly. Posada Lamar doesn't have it's own bar or restaurant but there plenty within walking distance down the beach. Next door is Posada Margherita which does fabulous italian food. Posadar Lamar is a great place to stay but be mindful that this type of hotel isn't for everyone - you are staying on a remote beach - if you like aircon, tv and can't stand insects Tulum beach may not be the place for you.

Nice location, the ladies at the front desk are sweet. Breakfast is served each morning between 8-10am, delivered to your doorstep. huts are clean and tidy, eco-friendly. free bottled water every day, two doors down from Posada Margherita, who makes great espresso drinks.

I recommend any of the bungalows, even if it's facing the garden. i didn't love the Ambar room, which is located closest to the parking lot, but it was still decorated nicely.

Posada Lamar was gorgeous - we stayed for a week in Bungalow Lapiz. It was considered a "beach view" bungalow and was worth every penny. Of the two "beach front" bungalows "Zafiro" was probably the best - had the most private balcony literally over the beach. "Rubi" was ok, but that bungalow was positioned a little lower & was definitely not as private. The other bungalows all lined the walkway to the beach - I would be a little self-conscious in there because people would be able to look in pretty easily!!

Breakfast each morning was brought to our bungalow - and consisted of fresh fruit, yogurt & granola, tea/coffee & freshly baked bread. Was a fantastic way to start the day. The staff was nice & helpful - always willing to provide more towels & water when we asked.

The beach was beautiful - but I wouldn't highly recommend it for anyone interested in actually spending a lot of time in the water (true for this whole stretch of beach - not just in front of Posada Lamar). The waves were pretty choppy - and there's a lot of sea weed (and, sadly, garbage) that is floating out there. They do a pretty good job cleaning up the beach each morning, though.

Two disappointments were that the hot water was a bit unreliable - by the end of the week the hot water only lasted about 30 seconds - if it came on at all. This might have been due to more people having checked in - but it was a little frustrating. However, it was so hot that their luke-warm cold water was usually sufficient for a quick shower. We were also never able to find their promised wireless network - which was probably a blessing in disguise (we were there to relax!) - but was still a little annoying.

I would recommend this hotel to adults - kids would probably get a bit bored. It was actually nice staying someplace without a restaurant - it forced us to eat at a variety of other restaurants (both in the pueblo & on the beach). Advice - if you're going during buggier season definitely bring spray (there are few screens on the windows - so bugs could definitely come in if they wanted to) - and bring a flashlight! It gets DARK at night!!!!

Posada Lamar would be perfect but for one problem: the beach is eroding on this stretch of Tulum. When I was there a huge wind storm blew up and took out huge chunks of the already narrowed beach in the area between Ana y Jose Weddings and the Retiro Maya. It washed out about half of the shaded area you see in Posada Lamar's photos. Some of the neighboring hotels had worse damage, losing palapas and coconut trees.

That being said, I will still go back even though the beach is not as broad as other areas of Tulum. I love this place. The cabanas are perfect: charming, spotless, enough hot water and pressure (relative to other 'eco-hotels'), comfortable beds and nice linens. All have private outdoor seating areas. The beachfront cabanas are fantastic, but don't think twice about saving money and staying in a gardenview cabana. I scoped out all them and there wasn't one dud. The staff was terrific - friendly and very attentive to detail - but not in your face. They kept the beach, grounds and rooms immaculate.

Another plus: Posada Lamar has no on-site restaurant. This means no built-in social scene and a more private, laid-back atmosphere. However, they still deliver coffee and breakfast to your room in the morning so you don't have to go anywhere until you've had some coffee. When you want a great meal, a drink or just to commune with humanity, the best restaurant in Tulum - the Posada Margarita - is less than 40 feet away. I liked Posada Lamar's breakfast but went next door for real Italian coffee. They let me run a tab (so laid-back!) even though I wasn't staying there, to relieve me of the burden of carrying cash around. Try their mint lemonade.

Bottom line: I loved my stay at Posada Lamar. So much that I spent $200 to change my flight and spend four more days. However - if you must have that perfect, non-eroded, broad beach... find another hotel further south on the Boca Paila Road - past the Retiro Maya - at the 5km mark or further.

That being said, it is entirely possible that the beach will gradually build up again so don't trust my comments on the erosion months from now. Check with whoever has left more recent comments than mine.

My wife and I just got back from a quick little trip down to Tulum. We stayed at Posada Lamar and in the Zafiro cabin. This place was exactly what we were looking for (see: "relax"). Zafiro Bungalow sits on the beach and a few steps from the water. The views are terrific and the rustic style of the resort matches perfectly with the beach and vibe in Tulum. Our beach was not crowded at all even though I believe all of the bungalows were occupied. As expected the water was beautiful and the scenery was right out of a Corona Commercial.

They serve a complimentary continental breakfast brought right to your bungalow which includes toast, jam, fresh fruit, yogurt, and some granola along with orange juice and coffee. It does not sound like much but it was perfect to start the day. If you want a heavier breakfast option there is a place next door called Kin Ha which offers french toast, pancakes, omelets, etc.

We rented a car from Cancun which was about $45 total for 3 days. This allowed us to go at our own pace. We stopped at Mega on the way down, bought a Styrofoam cooler, beers, and some ice to keep beers cold so we didn't have to buy them every time we wanted one. There is no refrigeration in your room so the cooler was nice to have. We also grabbed a bag of chips, a few tomatoes, avocado, garlic, salt, and lime to make some guac to snack on. If you bring down a little baggy with a fork, knife, and paper plates that should be perfect.

There are a few dinner options on the beach that you can walk to from here too. We are not the type to go out for Italian while in Mexico, but Posada Margarita is great. A bald, well tattooed gentleman greets you to go over the day's menu of fresh home-made pastas and fish selections. The beach setting is lovely and the food was very good. It was our favorite place to eat. Walk over to make reservations. We also ate at Hechizo It is about a 10 minute drive down the beach towards Saan Kaan. They recommend reservations and the folks at the hotel will set that up for you. We did not like Hechizo nearly as much as some of the others who had eaten there. The service was good, but the setting was a little odd and the food, while conceptually intriguing, was not executed the way I had anticipated. My wife ordered the Ahi Tuna and it was extremely under seasoned. The bread served looked and tasted like they were generic frozen dinner rolls. Their signature appetizer, watermelon salad with goat cheese, pine nuts, and balsamic vinegar reduction, was decent if not good. For more inexpensive fair and 2 for 1 drinks, check out the place next door to Posada Lamar called Kin Ha. They have an open air bar area and they make good Margaritas.

You have to understand what you are getting into here though. If you are the type who books all-inclusive vacations at Mega Resorts with 3+ pools and are looking for an American Vacation in Mexico, this is not your choice. And you have to be honest with yourself too....this is no frills, bare-bones relaxing. The sheets are not Egyptian cotton, there is no electrical outlet in your room, you only have the option of lights in your room from 6pm-12am, and you cannot flush toilet paper down the toilet (which is the case in all but the Mega Resorts and 5 Star retreats in Mexico). That being said, we really enjoyed our time here and for the couple who is looking to just hang out and enjoy the scenery and each others company, this is a really great trip. Bring cash because most places do not take plastic, including restaurants. You should also bring a few books too because reading in the hammock overlooking the water on a lazy afternoon is nice.

We loved our stay at Posada lamar and would definitely recommend it to other travelers. That said, a friend did just try to book a stay there and had trouble with their reservation system, so hopefully they'll get more organized. I thought the breakfasts were lovely, the staff friendly, and the location perfect. The smallness of the property was also appealing. We posted a trip report (with details about all of our stops in the Yucatan) at [--].
Have fun!
